Independent ceramist Sangkil Yoon (nickname: Okjae)
30 years of single path as a ceramist makes a masterpiece

An independent ceramist Yoon has traveled the nation to find good soil and artistic viewpoints of fellow ceramists for the last 30 years. He belongs no faction but has built his unique style by reinterpreting traditional method in modern terms. Unlike many ceramists who reproduce celadon or Idodawan and have viewpoint favorable for collectors or work for ceramic companies, Yoon pioneered his unique way. He thinks that art works must have the value of pure art and mass produce cannot be seen as art works. Therefore true art is the word for one of a kind art work in the world according to Yoon. For this reason, his work 'God's Gift (love +life)' amazed people home and abroad and revolutionized the ceramic art world. 

How to define Korean ceramics?
Since opening Okjaeyo Ceramic Art Gallery, Yoon has given much thought about how to define Korean ceramics. Korea, China and Japan are famous for ceramics but Korean's is more like a result of sculpture and painting's calculated chance of fire and is led by the tradition of reproduce and succession according to Yoon. He reproduced the 'first place of Koreadawan Hagiyaki' in Kyushu in Japan in the 80s and received a positive subsequent suggestion from Japan. On this occasion, he could visit a ceramic master's family (1st to 14th generation) and found out that they had been using the same wood furnace yet producing different type of ceramics in different methods. This amazed Yoon as most Korean ceramists only focus on reproduce. He then carried out an inner journey to find what can be called as art and established his thought that art is not at reproduce but at creation. He was regretful that Korean ceramists value practicality more than scarcity. To improve the conception in the field, he asked young ceramists to create but not reproduce. This is the reason, he does not belong to any faction or organization. Yoon says "I've met many master ceramists when I traveled the whole nation. I think there's a difference between people buying ceramics and artists make a true art work regardless public preference. I want to see more ceramists with true art works rather than fame and more people to appreciate regardless the publicity." Yoon added that reinterpreting traditional method in modern terms is the very direction of the 21st ceramic art and emphasized on competing by true art work but not by publicity.
