영원한 국모, 육영수 여사의 유지 받들어 교육․문화사업 등 전개

1969년 4월 설립된 재단법인 육영재단은 청소년에 대한 투철한 국가관 확립, 과학 지식의 보급 및 문화 예술, 체위향상과 전통예절교육 등에 필요한 제반 활동과 시설의 제공으로 건전한 민족사상을 함양 고취하고 있다. 또 과학의 생활화 및 정서의 순화와 체력의 보양, 문화 창달, 충효사상 고취 등에 기여하며, 특히 청소년의 복지증진에 이바지함과 유아에 대한 보육 및 적당한 환경조성으로 심신의 발육을 조장하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 설립자이자 국민의 가슴 속에 영원한 국모인 육영수 여사의 뜻에 따라 겨레의 꿈이요 나라의 보배인 어린이들의 올바른 성장을 위해 사회 다방면에서 활동하고 있는 재단법인 육영재단 조수연 이사장을 국내 대표 국․영문 잡지 월간파워코리아가 만나보았다.

육영재단, 1964년 설립 이래 어린이들 인성계발 앞장서

육영재단은 1964년 설립 이래로 1970년 남산에 어린이회관을 준공 개관하는 등 육영수 여사의 뜻에 따라 아이들의 꿈을 키우는 활동을 이어오고 있다. 육영수 여사는 1974년 어린이회관에서 커나갈 아이들을 위해 ‘웃고 뛰놀자, 그리고 하늘을 보며 생각하고 푸른 내일의 꿈을 키우자’는 말을 남긴 바 있다. 이는 육영재단 어린이회관의 중심철학이 되어 오늘까지도 아이들의 안전을 염두에 두고 푸른 꿈을 찾아가는 아이들의 건강한 몸과 고귀한 인성을 계발하고 있다.

육영재단의 핵심 미션인 ‘푸른 꿈을 찾아서’는 바로 이러한 가치를 대변하는 말이다. 어린이회관 건립 이후 지금까지 수많은 어린이들이 회관을 찾았고 수많은 푸른 꿈이 자라났다. 육영재단 어린이회관은 이 시대의 희망인 어린이들이 보고 듣고 놀 수 있는 유익한 전시물과 문화 시설을 제공하고 있다. 조수연 이사장은 “육영재단은 ‘2020, 국민에게 사랑받는 1등 재단법인’의 비전을 갖고 어린이들을 위한 교육사업․나눔사업․문화사업․공간사업․연구사업 등 다양한 활동을 이어가고 있다”고 밝혔다.

육영어린이집, 근화원 등에서 다양한 교육 사업 진행해

육영재단은 설립 직후인 1976년부터 중학교 2년생을 대상으로 일일과학학교 운영을 개시했다. 이렇듯 육영재단의 모든 활동은 아이들의 푸른 꿈을 응원하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 1983년 개원한 어린이회관 유치원은 넓고 아름다운 자연환경과 더불어 다양한 교육시설과 국내 최고 수준의 교사가 함께하는 유아교육 전문 기관이다. 또한 영유아의 발달 특성에 따라 다양한 교육과정을 편성한 육영어린이집, 1987년 국내 유일의 어린이 생활교육기관으로 개원하여 전통예절과 생활예절을 익히는 교육기관 근화원, 과학의 원리에 대한 호기심을 유발시키는 창의융합교실, 전문 강사진을 배치해 수준별 맞춤식 축구교실을 운영하는 육영재단 정해성 축구교실 등 다양한 교육 사업을 진행한다.

육영재단은 어린이들의 미소를 찾아주는 나눔 사업을 적극적으로 전개하고 있다. 대표적으로 희귀난치성질환 및 만성질환을 앓고 있는 저소득층 어린이를 지원하는 ‘푸른꿈 동아리’ 지원, 7세에서 15세에 발병하여 평생 인슐린에 의존해야 하는 만성질환인 소아당뇨 환우 지원, 각 분야 재능기부와 연계하여 음악, 미술, 체육, 직업체험 등 교육지원, 소외계층 아이들을 초청하여 다채로운 문화체험을 할 수 있도록 지원하는 문화지원 등 다양한 활동이 있다. 조 이사장은 “육영재단은 또한 미래 세대 행복 찾기, 다문화시대의 소통 등 다양한 주제를 통해 월 1회 ‘문화와 진로’를 큰 주제로 미래세대와 사회 문화에 관한 입체적 분석을 시도하는 미래세대 포럼을 개최하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

40여 개 프로그램 통해 다양한 체험 선사하는 대한민국 어린이 축제
육영전국어린이음악콩쿠르, 푸른꿈전국동요합창제 등 다양한 문화 행사 이어가

아이들의 푸른 꿈을 키워주는 문화사업 역시 육영재단의 주요 과제 중 하나다. 육영재단은 1971년 5월 5일 처음으로 개최되어 현재까지 이어지고 있는 대한민국 어린이축제를 통해 푸른꿈탐험대, 푸른꿈콘서트, 푸른꿈창의교실, 푸른꿈창작소 등 40여 개의 프로그램을 통해 다양한 시청각 체험과 전시, 대화, 공연 놀이 등을 진행하고 있다.

또 음악 영재의 조기 발굴을 위해 마련된 육영전국어린이음악콩쿠르는 전국의 6세 이상 유아 및 초등학생을 대상으로 하는 어린이 전문 클래식기악 경연대회로 회당 300여명의 인원이 참여하는 대규모 행사다. 2013년 신설된 푸른꿈전국동요합창제는 전국 어린이합창단을 대상으로 2000여 명의 인원이 참가해 아이들의 올바른 정서와 인성을 함양하고, 협동심과 배려심을 배양하며 자신감을 고취시키고 있다.

한편, 육영재단은 설립자 육영수 여사의 탄생일을 기념하고 유지를 받드는 비영리 문화나눔 축제인 ‘육영수여사 탄생기념축제’를 매년 개최하고 있다. 육영수여사 탄생기념축제는 매년 11월 29일부터 진행되며 2009년부터는 기존의 추모 분위기에서 탈피해 소외계층 문화캠프를 비롯한 다양한 체험의 기회를 제공하며 소중한 추억을 선사하고 있다.

올해는 특히 육영수 여사 탄생 90주년을 맞아 대한민국의 미래인 어린이를 위한 육영수 여사의 뜻과 업적을 되새기기 위해 11월 29일에서 12월 1일까지 총 3천여 명이 방문한 가운데 ‘육영수 여사 탄생 90주년 기념 축제’가 막을 내렸다.

11월 29일에는 어린이회관의 4대 핵심가치인 ‘안전, 인성, 건강, 꿈’의 의미를 전달할 수 있는 다양한 교육 프로그램으로 구성된 ‘푸른꿈 탐험대’와 육 여사의 일대기 스토리에 맞춘 <영부인, 사회봉사, 어린이, 어머니>라는 4가지 주제에 맞는 연주곡들을 들려준 함신익과 심포니송 초청연주회, 우주시대로 한발 더 다가갈 수 있는 친근하고 재미있는 프로그램들로 구성된 제2회 우주과학축제 등이 진행됐다.

30일에는 ‘지구촌 시대의 좋은 이웃’이라는 주제로 미래세대가 살아갈 다문화 사회를 조명하는 미래세대포럼과 나눔이 필요한 아동 및 청소년으로 구성된 육영재단의 ‘푸른꿈 탐험대 오케스트라’ 창단연주회가 열렸다. 마지막 날인 12월 1일에는 2015 제3회 푸른꿈전국동요합창제 본선 및 시상식이 개최됐다. 안양중앙초등학교합창단을 비롯해 전국에서 모인 7개 아마추어 어린이합창단이 모여 들려주는 아름다운 하모니를 감상하며, 축제의 막이 내렸다.

한편, 육영재단 어린이회관 관계자는 “육영재단 설립자인 육영수 여사 탄생 90주년을 맞아 육 여사님의 ‘이타적인 사랑’을 다시 한 번 조명해보고, 어린이와 부모 그리고 젊은 세대들이 한 마음으로 소통하고 공감하는 기회가 된 것 같다”며, 앞으로도 ‘국민에게 사랑받는 기관’으로 새롭게 출발하는 어린이회관에 많은 관심과 응원을 부탁드린다”고 개최 소감을 밝혔다.

육영재단 어린이회관은 마스터플랜 2020을 수립하고 어린이와 청소년, 가족들이 함께 뛰어놀 수 있는 문화와 교육의 장을 만들기 위한 만반의 준비를 시작하고 있다. 어린이들의 행복을 위해 과학을 탐구하고 예술을 경험하고 인성을 배우는 육영재단 어린이회관의 아름다운 행보를 통해 대한민국의 미래가 밝아지며 육영수 여사의 유지가 더욱 굳건히 실현되어 모든 어린이가 행복한 세상을 꿈꾸는 날이 올 것이라 굳게 믿는다.

Keeping Yook’s will to promote education and culture for children

Established in April 1969, Yookyoung Foundation has been promoting sound national ideology, tradition, scientific knowledge and culture & art through various activities and facilities. It also promotes healthy and sound growth of children and young people with respect to elderly people. It was founded by the first lay Youngsoo Yook (wife of Former President Chunghee Park: both deceased). Power Korea met Chairman Sooyeon Jo of Yookyoung Foundation.

Taking the initiative in developing children’s personality education

The foundation opened The Korea Children’s Center in Namsan Mountain in 1970. Yook once said at the center in 1974 “Let’s laugh and play, look up the sky and dream of bright future.” This became the central philosophy of the foundation ever since. The core mission of the foundation thus is ‘Finding Bright Future’. Millions of children paid a visit to the center and grew their dream. The center provides cultural space and various exhibitions for children. Chairman Jo says “With our vision ‘2020, No.1 beloved foundation of people’, we are actively carrying out various projects in education, charity, culture, space and research.”

Talent donations to support children in need

The foundation has run ‘daily science school’ for second grade middle school students since 1976. The kindergarten in the center also was opened in 1983 and it is surrounded by beautiful landscape and is equipped with various educational facilities and the best teachers for children in Korea. In addition, the foundation opened ‘Yookyoung Children’s House’ for infant and children education, ‘Geunhwanwon’ as Korea’s sole life & decorum education for children in 1987, ‘Creative Fusion Class’ for promoting children’s interest in science and ‘Jeonghaesung Football Class’ run by professional instructors. The foundation also supports ‘Green Dream Club’ for low income family’s children suffering from rare incurable diseases and chronic illnesses, ‘childhood diabetes patients’, ‘talent donations’ in music, art, sports and job experience and ‘education’ for children’s of neglected class of people. Chairman Jo says “We also hold ‘Future Generation Forum’ under the theme of ‘Finding Happiness for Future Generation’, ‘Multi-Cultural Family Communication’ and ‘Culture & Career Path’.

The foundation has run Korea Children’s Festival since 5 May 1971. The festival includes 40 programmes including ‘Green Dream Explorer’, ‘Green Dream Concert’, ‘Green Dream Creative Class’ and ‘Green Dream Factory’. Yookyoung National Children’s Music Contest in particular is attracting 300 children aged above 6 for classical instrument competition. ‘Green Dream National Children’s Song Choir’ on the other hand is inviting 2,000 children and encouraging children’s agreeable personality, spirit of team work and consideration for others. In order to commemorate the first lady, the foundation also holds ‘Commemorative Festival for Birthday of Lady Yookyoungsoo’ every year on 29 November. The festival turned more to be low income-class friendly with various cultural camp and experience programmes since 2009.

Commemorative concert and 2nd Space Science Festival to be held

The commemorative event to mark the 90th anniversary of the first lady Youngsoo Yook was held between 29 November to 1 December. 3,000 people paid a visit to the festival. 29 November was particularly interesting: ‘Green Dream Explorer’ delivered the four core values of the center - ‘safety, personality, health and dream’, Symphony S.O.N.G Shinik Hahm played classical music under the theme of ‘The First Lady, Social Service, Children, Mother’ and The 2nd Space Science Festival was held. On the 30th, the foundation held ‘Future Generation Forum’ with the subject ‘Good Neighbors of the World’ for illuminating multi-cultural society and ‘Green Dream Explorer Orchestra’, consisted of children and young people in need, gave a concert. On the 1st December, the foundation held the final and awarding ceremony of ‘Green Dream National Children’s Song Choir’. 7 choirs including Anyang Jungang Elementary School delivered beautiful harmonies. An official of the foundation said “We illuminated the passion and love of the first lady and provided space and opportunities for children, parents and young people. We will keep doing our best to make the foundation to be loved by many and I ask people to give a support for us.” Meanwhile, the foundation has built ‘Master Plan 2020’ to create foundation for culture and education for children, youth and family.
