영원히 피고 또 피어서 지지 않는 꽃, 무궁화
21c 페미니즘의 정신을 화폭에 담아내는 대표 여류화가

어느 낯익은 담벼락 밑에서 보랏빛으로 진 무궁화 꽃잎을 보았다. 떨어진 꽃들은 하나같이 입을 다문 채로 떨어져, 어떤 것은 오가는 사람들의 발길에 채이기도 하고, 또 어떤 것은 입 다문 그대로 통꽃이다. ‘可燐榮落在朝昏’이라 하였다. ‘이른 아침에 피어 저녁에 짐이 가련하다’라는 말이다. 어쩌면 인간이 살아가는 모습이 그와 같기에 무궁화는 우리에게 더욱 가까운 꽃이 되었는지도 모른다. 우리나라 꽃, 무궁화의 이야기를 들어보고자 ‘무궁화 작가’라 불리는 김지영 작가를 만나봤다.

무궁화, 소담스럽게 꽃을 피우다
7월부터 10월까지. 무려 100일 동안이나 피고 짐을 반복하는 꽃, 무궁화. 다양한 색을 갖고 있음에도 지나치게 화려하지 않고, 무수히 많은 꽃을 피우면서도 번잡하지 않다. 꽃나무에 꽃이 매달린 채로 시드는 법이 없고, 피어있는 동안에는 다른 꽃들의 향기를 이기려 들지 않으면서도 그윽하고 오래가는 향기를 풍기며, 해 저물녘 그 마지막에는 제 스스로 봉우리를 오므려 남모르게 조용히 툭-하고 떨어진다. 한 그루의 무궁화가 100일 동안 피우는 꽃은 무려 5천 송이. 화사하면서도 단아한 꽃과 그 강인하고도 끈질긴 생명력은 갖은 고난과 역경 속에서도 꿋꿋이 삶을 이어갔던 5천년 한민족의 역사와 놀랍도록 닮아있다.

이러한 무궁화의 아름다움에 매료되어, 그리고 그 안에 담긴 한과 정서에 매혹되어 오랜 시간 무궁화를 통해 자신만의 회화 세계를 펼쳐온 인물이 바로 ‘무궁화 작가’ 김지영 작가다. 그는 개인전 9회, 부스전 3회, 연간 15~20회 가량의 단체 및 초대전을 꾸준히 열 정도로 방대한 작업량을 자랑하는 열정적인 예술가이다. 넘치는 예술혼과 에너지를 작품을 통해 표현하고 있는 김 작가는 무궁화에 대한 남다른 철학과 그 표현방식, 독특한 작품세계를 높이 평가받고 있어 이번 11월호를 맞아 특별한 기획으로 다루게 되었다.

그를 만나기 위해 기자가 찾아간 곳은 부산시 금정구 부곡 3동에 위치한 작업실. 먼 길 오느라 고생이 많았다며 건물 앞까지 마중 나온 김지영 작가를 따라 들어선 작업실엔 눈 닿는 곳마다 무궁화 그림이 가득했다. 아직 채 모습을 갖추지 못하고 가벼운 드로잉으로 자신을 언뜻 내비치고 있는 것부터, 우리네 어머니의 모습과 그 안에 담긴 정서를 무궁화와 함께 표현해낸 작품들까지. 어쩌면 작업실을 가득 채우고 있던 은근한 향기는 저 다양한 크기의 화폭들에 담긴 무궁화에서 흘러나오고 있는 것인지도 모르겠다는 생각이 들었다.

“무궁화는 대한민국이며, 여자이자 어머니입니다. 무궁화는 은근하고 겸손합니다. 요염한 향기나 화려한 자태는 없지만 수수하고 단아합니다. 무궁화가 가진 정서와 의미는 우리 민족, 그리고 여성이 겪어온 힘겹고 고단한 삶과 맞닿아있습니다”

기자가 김지영 작가를 만나기 위해 부산까지 먼 길을 달려온 것도 바로 이 때문이었다. 분명 지금은 과거와는 다르다. 수천 년의 시간이 흐르는 동안, 그리고 일제강점기를 지나 해방이 되고 눈부신 경제발전을 이룩하는 동안 여성은 핍박과 착취, 희생의 대상으로서 존재했다. 혹자는 점차 여성의 지위가 향상되고 사회 전반에서의 여성 권익과 목소리가 높아지면서, 이제 여성은 사회를 구성하는 당당한 일원으로서 인정받고 있다고 말한다. 심지어는 대한민국 최초로 여성대통령까지 나왔다고 말한다. 그러나 정말 그뿐일까.

끈질긴 생명력과 단아한 아름다움의 상징
21세기를 향해 나아가고 있는 지금의 대한민국 안에도 여전히 여성에 대한 차별과 편견, 착취는 존재한다. 취업시장에서 여성은 그 역할과 직위가 한정되어 있으며, 각종 불이익을 감수해야만 한다. 가정에서도 마찬가지다. 장기화된 경기침체로 이제 맞벌이는 필수처럼 여겨지지만, 여전히 육아와 가사노동은 여성만의 몫으로 남겨져 있으며, 대부분의 남성들은 이를 당연한 것으로 받아들인다. 연일 뉴스를 통해 보도되는 각종 폭력의 피해자는 대개 여성이며, 우리의 일상 속에서도, 대화 속에서도 여성에 대한 편견과 차별은 조금씩 묻어나온다.

“19세기 하반기의 여성운동은 단순한 남녀평등의 주장이나 성차별 철폐에 포커스가 맞춰져 있었죠. 하지만 21세기에 이르러 페미니즘 운동은 비판과 저항정신, 서로 다른 개체에 대한 인정을 넘어서 착취계급을 대표하는 남성에 대한 가사노동의 평등권을 활발하게 주장하고 있습니다. 하나의 인격체로서 자립하고 자신의 정체성을 찾을 수 있는 존재. 여성이 남성을 능가하길 바라는 것이 아니라 동등한 위치에 서서 상생하는 발전적인 관계를 확립해나가고자 하는 것이 현대의 페미니즘입니다”

김지영 작가의 작품 안에는 대부분 무궁화와 여인이 함께 등장한다. 아름다움을 상징하는 여인과 풍성한 무궁화의 조화, 그리고 완벽하게 어우러지는 색채감은 보는 이들에게 편안함을 안겨준다. 앞서 그 스스로 말했듯, 무궁화는 여자이다. 다시 말하자면 그의 작품 안에서 무궁화는 보이지 않는 여성의 내면과 아름다움을 상징한다. 또한 우리 시대 여성이 가져야 할 자세가 무엇인지를 말하고 있다. 여성들이 자신의 정체성을 자각하고 자기발전과 성찰의 필요성을 인식하는 것, 정도와 기본을 지킬 줄 아는 미래지향적인 인성과 도덕성을 갖추고 진취적인 사고로 끊임없이 노력하는 것이 필요하다는 생각이다.

김지영 작가의 이러한 생각은 ‘우리 사회에서의 여성’이라는 틀에 갇힌 것이 아닌, 우리 민족의 역사와 정체성까지 확대된다는 것에 더욱 큰 의미를 가진다. 식물이 자라기 힘든 여러 악조건 속에서도 화사한 꽃을 피울 수 있는 무궁화의 강인한 자생력은 외세의 압박과 침략 속에서도 마지막까지 희망을 놓지 않고, 끝끝내 다시 피어난 우리의 역사 그 자체이기 때문이다. 그가 신사임당과 이순신, 박정희 전 대통령, 반기문 총장, 축구선수 박지성, 피겨스케이팅 김연아 선수 등 세계에 대한민국을 널리 알린 인물들을 아름다운 무궁화와 함께 화폭에 담아내고 있는 것도 이러한 연유다. 

지난 30여 년간 자신만의 창의적인 예술세계를 펼쳐내며 대한민국을 대표하는 중견작가로 자리매김하고 있는 김지영 작가. 200회 이상의 초대전과 국내미술 수상경력, 수많은 미술단체에서의 활동을 이어오고 있는 것은 그가 펼쳐낸 세계에 많은 관객들이 공감하며 감동받고 있기 때문일 것이다. 이쯤해서 다시 한 번 말하고 싶다. 대한민국 최초의 여성대통령은 여성 인권 향상의 절정이 아니다. 현대 사회에서 여성이 갖는 위치를 생각하면 오히려 이는 그 출발점이 되어야 한다. 김지영 작가가 가진 한국적인 예술혼과 작품세계가 우리 사회에 은은하고도 단아한 무궁화의 향기를 깊게 전해줄 수 있기를 바란다.

Rose of sharon repeats blooming and falling for 100 days between July and October. It has a variety of colors yet not splendid, many petals yet not crowded. It never withers while hanging on the tree, never tries to win other flowers’ scent but gives off its own profound and long lasting fragrance, and finally puckers the buds on the last sunset and fall off quietly. A rose of sharon tree blooms 5,000 flowers during 100 days and its dazzling, elegant, strong and persistent vitality is similar to the 5,000 history of tenacious Korean people. Artist Jiyoung Kim, known as ‘rose of sharon artist’, was enchanted by this charm of the flower and has expressed her feeling onto canvas for a long time.

She has held 9 solo exhibitions including 3 booth exhibitions and regularly holds or is invited to 15 to 20 group and invitation exhibitions a year. Her considerable number of works are the result of her passion in the flower and they are highly praised by art critics. Encouraged by the critics and impressed by the works, I could not help but having an interview with her. Her studio is located in Bugok 3 dong, Geumjeong  District, Busan. With her warm greeting, Kim led me into the studio which I soon saw a lot of rose of sharon paintings from rough sketches to matured ones with the image of our mothers hanging here and there. I thought that the scent my nose sensed might came from those paintings. Kim said “The flower for me symbolizes Korea, women and mothers. It is quiet and modest yet graceful. It is closely related to the lives of our ancestors and in particular women who suffered more hardships.” It is true that women have been a subject of persecution, exploitation and sacrifice through most of the human history. Some people say that time has changed and they are equally treated more than ever as we even have a woman president. But is it really so?

If you take a little more attentive look at the Korean society, you can clearly see there still is prejudice and unfairness against women. They have limited career path and position in work, have to take care of housework and most men take it as natural as they breathe the air. Most victims of violence in the news are women and they are a subject of disgrace and trivial in many talks. Artist Kim says “The feminist movement in the 19th century was focused on equality and gender discrimination. In the 21th century, it covers criticism, spirit of resistance, equality at the whole society level, women’s independence, gaining identity and co-growth on equal terms.” 

Most of Kim’s works contain rose of sharon and women. They are a combination of beautiful women and abundant flowers based on a perfect harmony of colors. You cannot help but feel comfortable by appreciating her works. Like Kim mentioned early, the flower symbolizes women’s beauty and inner side. Kim talks about three things that modern females should have; awareness of one’s identity and development, future-oriented personality and morality, and continuous effort in adventurous spirit. This of Kim’s idea not only tells us about ‘women in our society’ but also extended meaning of national identity and history. Like rose of sharon breaks up unfavorable conditions to bloom, women, and Koreans, have made it through to be here today. For this reason, she put a female leader Shin Sa-im-dang, admiral Yi Sun-shin, Former President Park Chung-hee, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, football player Park Ji-sung and figure skater Kim Yu-na in the canvas with rose of sharon.

Kim has painted for 30 years. She held and participated solo, group and invitation exhibitions for 200 times and has won numerous prizes. She has also been very active in various art organizations. I would like to make my point one more time. Having a female president does not mean our society provides equal and fair treatment for women. It rather should be a starting point. I hope Kim communicates with more and more people through her works.
