Putting metaphoric symbolism into invisible values
“The shape and spirit of man is seen for what it contains”
Sculptor Sungyoung Kim
Resin contains human properties, marble the quality of salt
Sculptor Kim says “I’m not interested in exploring the body itself but the contents it contains; the outer man, the spirit and the soul. And I use resin and marble to express it.” One might feel curious when seeing the bag Kim made as it is for appreciation rather than carrying. “Thanks to taking care of my family as a woman, I could only possibly have my first solo exhibition in 10 years since graduate school. I started with handy materials such as newspapers. Words are printed on them and we can create various effects depending on the way we build up a form by pointing out certain illustrations or fonts.” She titled her first solo exhibition as ‘Voice – Freedom’. However, the works were criticized for expressing lack of properties of the objects and the use of common materials. Kim gave a thought to herself and set off on a journey to find new materials. She drifted from stones to trees but eventually landed on resin.
“It was around 2002. I found resin as a unique material as it is stronger and more solid than stones and I could add colors in it. I felt I finally met the thing I can express myself with. I made bags first. I wondered why most women are eager to possess a luxury bag and what values do they see and feel in it. But instead of hanging around on the question further, I focused on its primary purpose; to put things in. Then I developed my concept about the object that it would give desire when money is in it and fear when deadly weapons in it.” She put a tag, instruction of use and origin of produce on the bag. She displayed the bag with the subject <SEE, LOOK, WATCH> at the 56th Venice Biennale. But the bag this time contained salt.
“Salt for me symbolizes varieties. It prevents decomposition, purifies things and, interestingly, used for money in the past. But above all, it is widely used for food which she has to lose her form but melted. Nevertheless, it functions its primary role in the state of invisibility. It is irony that bag must be made empty in order to play its primary role of filling it up with something. But the point is that we can also fill it up with something invisible. And that can be anything. In my case, I tried to make a ring with resin but with the image of salt made of marble. This is because rings can symbolize a vow or eternity.” Kim explains the process of making a bag. “You need a physical strength to be a sculptor. Resin, for example, I have to repeat the sanding process of resin 50 times at least but sometimes it exceeds hundreds times not to mention the coloring process. But I willingly take the job to create a sculpture I want.” Kim concludes by saying “Important things are invisible.”
