[Feature story] Professor Kim Chang-su, Yeungnam Univ. Dept. of Business Administration
<Korea’s proudly innovative person>
Prof. Kim Chang-su, Yeungnam Univ. selected for ‘the digital business innovator’ with achievements in ICT
His activity in Korea Institute of Digital Convergence and Korea Academic Society of Digital Business Administration (KASDBA)

Prof. Kim Chang-su, a man of influence in digital business
‘The world’s top 100 educators’ selected by IBC, 8 years’ successive listing on Marquis Who’s Who

Prof. Kim Chang-soo, Yeungnam Univ., majored in computer science and obtained master’s degree in computer science at London University and doctor’s degree in e-commerce at LSE in the UK. Then, he worked as guest professor at London Univ. (UK), Harvard Univ. Business School and MIT Sloan School of Management (US) carrying out global academic activities in the fields of digital business and digital administration.

Being accredited with the performance of constant studies in e-business and excellent achievements and academic exchange with the world’s preeminent researchers, Prof. Kim was selected for ‘the World’s top 100 educators’ by Cambridge Univ. International Biographical Center (UK) with permanent record at IBC Hall. He has also been successively listed on the distinguished Marquis Who’s Who from 2007 through 2015. Recently, Prof. Kim recognized the importance of “applying digital convergence and entrepreneurship” in order for Korea to become one of the world’s top 5 economic powerhouses and wrote “Digital Business” on it with Harvard Business School (HBS) professors and MIT Sloan School professors. This English-language edition was published in 2015 by Chicago Business Press and is being currently used as a textbook in US universities.

Improves efficiency by positively introducing Harvard system of education
KASDBA to hold an international conference at the end of November

While working as guest professor at Harvard and MIT, Prof. Kim felt that one origin of the US’ competitiveness is “creative human resources.” So he is making efforts to positively introduce the merits of American-style education in our country. He is cultivating the students’ thinking power and improving lecture efficiency through a discussion class by introducing Harvard system of case study into the undergraduate and graduate courses of Yeungnam University.

After finishing his guest professor at Harvard he returned home and, by immediately asking the Ministry of Knowledge Economy to establish Korea Institute of Digital Convergence, he is now serving as its president. As an organization made to strengthen the competitiveness of Korean industries based on digital convergence, this institute is operating with the chief aim of making smart ecology to haul creative economy, strengthening the competiveness of smaller enterprises and relieving digital gap of the alienated.

As the president of KASDBA, he held biannual conferences at home and abroad contributing to exchanging the latest research related to digital management with AURI (Industry-University-Institute Association) and forming discourses. Prof. Kim has built it up as a mid-sized academy in which 500 professors and research teams participate. He clarified, “We held an international conference at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 24th and 25th of November, 2015 in an effort to make this domestic academic society into a global one. We are preparing to hold an international conference consisting of global researchers in spring and autumn from next year on by forming a consortium with the SCOPUS.”

While being a guest professor at MIT Sloan School, US, in 2012, Prof. Kim recognized the importance of venture, startup and entrepreneurship and, after returning home, established Korea Small Medium Business Association to help Korea’s ventures, smaller enterprises, etc. substantially with difficulty they are faced with and establish the support system centered on field sites. The association, which was authorized by Small Business Administration at the end of June 2015, is making its best efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of smaller enterprises and protect their rights and interests.

Needs to strengthen 5 major core industries to become one of advanced countries
“Smaller enterprises should be determined to strengthen competitiveness.”
Prof. Kim’s wish is that Korea should become one of the top 5 economic powerhouses in the world. He said, “Our economic power must be doubled to reach a level similar to the UK, currently on the 5th place of the world. In order to double Korea’s economic power, we should focus on smashing the regulations to cultivate the global market and preparing the support system for large enterprises. For smaller enterprises, we should rear a second Hyundai Motors and Samsung Electronics by executing policies and financial support to meet their needs and strengthening their competitiveness. To that end, our people should be determined that they can do it and they will make it once more.”

Prof. Kim clarified, “To become an advanced country, we must strengthen the five core industries based on ICT convergence – digital, tourism, finance, biomedical, and air transport and munitions.” He insisted on building industrial complex based on digital, investing in Gyungju to make it a 2nd Rome, building up KDB (Korea Development Bank) into a global investment bank, rearing biomedical field by concentrating resources on Daegu and Osong areas, and bringing up aviation and munitions industry into the next-generation’s promising industry by applying ICT convergence to the fields such as robot soldier, real-time observation system, drone pilotless aircraft, antisubmarine patrol, etc. Prof. Kim Chang-soo is a leader who is carrying on panoramic activity for the future of Korea. Since his is a renowned professor in the world, it must be interesting to note how his steps forward will lead Korea to an advanced country.
