한국 소프트웨어의 힘, 산학공동연구로 결실 맺다
일반문서 자동 계층분류 시스템 상용화, 실질적 기업 매출 증가로 이어져

산학협력이란 말 그대로 산업체와 대학이 인적·물적으로 협력해 상호 공존하고 발전을 도모하는 모든 형태의 사업을 의미한다. 특히 최근에는 대학 및 연구기관이 갖추고 있는 우수한 연구기반과 기업의 연구기능을 연계해 기술이전이나 공동연구를 수행하는 등 실질적인 형태의 산학협력이 추진되며 산·학·연 간 시너지 효과를 창출하고 있다.

폭넓은 활용성 갖춘 유일한 비정형 문서편집기
지난 8월, 한국산학연협회는 숭실대학교 소프트웨어학부의 김명호 교수를 ‘이달의 우수 산학연 협력전문가’로 선정했다. 대학연구기관 우수 기술전문가들의 산학연 협력의지를 고취하고, 협력사업을 통해 도출된 성과를 전파하기 위한 이번 수상에서 김명호 교수는 ㈜젠솔소프트와 함께 개발하고 상용화한 통합문서편집기 ‘DOCU-Editor’의 성과를 인정받았다. DOCU-Editor는 일반문서의 계층 분류를 통해 의미를 가진 문서로 변환함으로써 비정형 문서의 변경 내역 추적과 신구 대비표, 개정 내역 등을 자동으로 작성해주는 프로그램이다. 김 교수는 “DOCU-Editor는 정부 기관의 법령뿐만 아니라 기업 내 사규나 민감한 이력 등 복잡한 계층 구조를 가진 문서들을 체계적으로 관리하는 시스템에 폭넓게 활용될 수 있다는 점에서 높은 평가를 받았습니다. 특히 비정형 문서에 대한 처리기능을 제공하는 문서편집기는 이 제품이 유일하다는 점에서 남다른 경쟁력을 갖추고 있습니다”라고 설명했다. 

이러한 연구 활동은 기업의 R&D 경쟁력 확보와 함께 실질적인 매출 향상으로 이어지고 있다. ‘DOCU-Editor’의 경우 지난 1년여의 기간 동안 약 5억 원의 신규 매출 실적을 올렸으며, 지난해에는 국산 소프트웨어 품질 인증인 ‘GS인증’을 획득했다. 또 특허 등록 1건과 프로그램 등록 2건 등의 지식재산권을 창출했으며, 젠솔소프트는 통합문서편집기 유지관리 및 업그레이드를 위해 4명의 인력을 신규로 채용하는 등 일자리 창출의 성과도 낳았다.

상호이해와 신뢰가 기반 된 산학협력이 필요해
젠솔소프트와 김명호 교수의 협업은 산학공동연구의 모범적인 사례로 손꼽히고 있다. 이미 2009년부터 젠솔소프트와 오랜 파트너 관계를 유지해온 김명호 교수는 중소기업청에서 주관한 ‘산학 융합 연구마을 지원사업’을 통해 우수한 성과를 창출한 바 있다. 실제로 젠솔소프트는 1차 기술개발에 이어 제품의 시장 확대를 위한 2차 사업화 과제까지 연구마을 지원사업을 통해 추진하고 있다. 또한 김 교수는 최근 ‘법률 온톨로지(ontology) 자동 구축 시스템‘ 개발에 매진하며, 이를 바탕으로 한 지능형 검색시스템과 프라이버시 데이터 보호시스템 연구에 총력을 기울이고 있다. 김 교수는 “연구·개발에 있어 중요한 것은, 개발된 기술이 이론에서 그치는 것이 아닌 실제로 사업화되어 많은 사람들을 통해 유용하게 활용되는 일입니다”라고 강조하며, 기술개발과 사업화 R&D를 연계 지원할 수 있는 다양한 프로그램이 마련되어야 한다고 당부했다. 아울러 “산학협력이 효율적으로 이뤄지기 위해선 학교와 기업이 꾸준히 관계를 맺으며 서로 이해하고 신뢰를 쌓는 것이 중요합니다. 또한 프로젝트 기반의 산학모델이 아닌, 대학 연구진이 기술적인 도움을 줄 수 있는 회사를 선정해 서로 협업하는 것이 더 나은 성과를 창출할 수 있는 방법입니다”라고 의견을 피력했다. 

현재 숭실대 소프트웨어학부의 학부장을 맡고 있는 김명호 교수는 이러한 연구 성과를 학부의 경쟁력 강화로 이어나갈 계획이다. 1970년, 국내 최초로 전자계산학과를 개설하며 국내 소프트웨어 교육을 선도해온 숭실대만의 축적된 노하우를 기반으로 학생들이 설계부터 구현, 유지보수에 이르기까지 소프트웨어 개발의 전 과정을 경험하게 해 취업역량이 극대화된 실무인재를 양성하겠다는 방침이다. IT시대의 세계 시장을 선도하기 위해선 소프트웨어 산업이 기반 되어야 한다는 김명호 교수의 말처럼 그의 연구가 IT강국 대한민국의 밑거름이 되어주기를 기대한다.

Introducing the unique atypical text editor
AURI (Korea Association of University, Research Institute and Industry) appointed software Prof. Myeongho Kim at Soongsil University as ‘the excellent industry-academic cooperation specialist of the month’ last August for his achievement in developing and commercializing a total text editing device  ‘DOCU-Editor’ in cooperation with Gensolsoft. DOCU-Editor uses auto paper hierarchical classification system to turn normal documents to classified documents. It automatically tracks the changes of atypical documents and makes an old & new comparative table as well as details of revision. Prof. Kim says “DOCU-Editor can systematically categories and manage complicated and sensitive documents used in public offices and companies. Especially, it is the sole program to provide processing ability for atypical documents.” Kim’s development is greatly contributing to raising companies’ R&D efficiency and product sales. DOCU-Editor created a $437,000 sales in one year, obtained GS Certification last year, obtained a patent and an intellectual property right and registered 2 related programs. Gensolsoft, on the other hand, hired 4 new employees for maintenance and upgrade of DOCU-Editor. 

Industry-academic cooperation built on mutual understanding
The cooperation between Prof. Kim and Gensolsoft has became a role model in industry-academic cooperation. Kim has worked with Gensolsoft since 2009 and they have drawn an excellent result through ‘Industry-academic Fusion Research Village Support Project’ managed by the Small and Medium Business Administration. The company carried out the first technology development and the second commercialization task through the project. Currently, Prof. Kim is working on developing ‘Law Ontology Automatic Building System’ which will actualize search system and privacy data protection system. Kim says “The important thing in R&D is to make theory into action and action into commercialization. On top of that, we need various support programs in relation to technology development and R&D. Another important factor is that there needs to be mutual understanding between universities and companies. Finding each party’s needs and wants will greatly contribute to building trust and efficiency between them” Meanwhile, Soongsil University where Prof. Kim is working has built unique knowhow and knowledge in development of Korean softwares and is providing uncomparable programs from design, realization and maintenance of softwares. Power Korea hopes that Prof. Kim and Soongsil University will take a great part in upgrading Korean software technology one step further and ahead.
