세계 최초로 담배의 기호성을 유지한 금연보조제와 무연담배의 장점만을 결합한 담배대체품인  미국의 니커슈어 사이드킥(NicAssure Sidekick)이 드디어 한국에 진출했다. 니커슈어의 국내 독점사인 엘제이라이니(주)가 소개하는 ‘어느 곳에서도 사용할 수 있는’ 니커슈어 사이드킥은 혁신적인 제품이다. 이 스틱형 무연담배 대체품은 흡연의 위험성을 최소로 줄이면서 연기 없이 비흡연자를 보호하여 흡연자와 비흡연자 간의 공존을 기대하게 한다. 

담배처럼 즐기고 흡연자의 건강부담을 줄이는 흡연보조제 ‘니커슈어’
일반담배 가격인상과 세금증가, 금연구역확대, 유해물질에 대한 폐해 인식으로 미국에서만 한화 2조 6천억 원 이상의 무연담배 시장이 형성되어 있다고 한다. 이러한 가운데 미국 아리조나주에 소재한 니커슈어 유한책임회사는 세계 최초로 담배와 같은 모양의 스틱형 무연담배 대체품을 개발하는데 성공했다. 이 스틱형 무연담배 니커슈어 사이드킥은 라이터 없이 평소 흡연하던 방식대로 흡입할 수 있다. 전자담배와 달리 1개당 2mg의 순수니코틴만이 함유되어 있으며, 화학적 기술을 통해 상온에서도 분자화 단위로 일정하게 기화되어 있기에 아주 적은 니코틴을 흡수해도 흡연효과를 볼 수 있다. 그래서 개피당 200-400회 흡입하면서 흡연갈증을 해소하기 좋다. 또한 불을 붙이지 않기 때문에 치아와 손가락 변색, 꽁초와 담뱃재 생성으로 인한 불쾌감이 없다. 연기와 특유의 냄새가 없으므로 화재나 주위 사람들에게 간접흡연의 피해를 줄 걱정도 없다.

그 외에도 니커슈어는 배터리, 충전기, 훈증기, 액충진기 같은 장치가 필수인 전자담배와 달리 휴대가 간편하여 비행기 같은 금연 대중교통수단, 병원, 식당 등 공공장소는 물론 화재의 위험이 큰 곳에서도 단 몇 모금 흡입하는 것만으로도 ‘담배 한 개비’의 강렬한 흡연 욕구를 해소할 수 있다. 미국 버지니아 주의 아리스타 연구소에서 분석한 결과, 알려진 일반 담배의 4천 여 가지 유해물질과 43가지 발암물질이 검출되지 않은 것으로 판명 받았다. 또한, 니커슈어를 전 세계 미군 주둔지역 PX에 론칭중이다. 이렇게 세계 최초 스틱형 무연담배 시장을 개척한 니커슈어는 출시 3년 만에 미국, 그리고 2만 7천개 매장에 진출한 캐나다에 이어 3번째로 한국에 진출했고, 엘제이라이니(주)에서 총판을 맡아 인기를 이어갈 전망이다.

진병규 대표는 “더 이상 사람들을 피해 담배를 피워 물지 않아도 된다. 식당, 밀폐구역, 금연구역에서 담배를 피우기를 원하거나 발암물질을 걱정하는 흡연자들에게 본 담배대체품 니커슈어는 최적의 선택이 될 것”이라며 무연담배, 껌이나 패치 형태의 금연보조제, 전자담배가 3대 천하를 이루고 있는 국내 시장에 ‘니코친구 니커슈어’라는 이름으로 도전장을 던졌다. “미국에서는 간접흡연 피해가 없어 담배로 분류되지 않으며, 담배로 분류되는 우리나라에서도 미국 현지와 같은 효과를 볼 수 있을 것으로 본다. 제품은 개개인의 기호성을 위해 일반 담배, 민트, 베리, 복숭아 4가지 맛으로 출시해 초기 반응이 좋다. 한국은 흡연자가 많으면서 담배 가격이 상승하는 추세이며, 금연구역이 확대되는 지역이라 앞으로도 시장성이 여느 국가보다 높다” 담배의 대체품으로서 니커슈어는 현재 광화문역, 세종문화회관 인근 가판점, JYP · YG등 연예기획사 부근, 이태원, 홍익대 부근 등 전국 소매점에서 판매 중이며 향후 각 편의점을 통해서도 애연가들에게 공급할 예정이다.

진 대표는 향후 3년 이내로 우리나라 흡연인구의 10%를 사용자층으로 만들것을 목표로 무연담배의 새로운 패러다임인 ‘니코친구 니커슈어’를 정착시키고, 보다 편리한 금연에 도전하는 흡연자들을 위해서 조만간 미국 니커슈어 본사의 또 하나의 히트작 스틱형 금연보조제 ‘퍼스트 스텝(First Step)’을 도입.출시해 인기를 이어갈 전망이다.

니커슈어의 한국 시장 진입 현황과 전망은 어떤가?
한국의 많은 소매점에서 취급 중이며, 현재 론칭중인 미군 PX에 공급되게 되면 앞으로 한국 군대 PX진출 가능성을 긍정적으로 생각하고 있다. 연기 맛으로 피우는 흡연자보다는 택시회사 등 밀폐된 곳에서 담배를 피우는 수요자가 많은 곳을 집중 공략할 예정이다. 또한 금연조치가 점점 강력해지고 있어서 한국 내 수요가 늘고 있다. 

새로운 금연보조제 퍼스트 스텝은 어떤 제품인가?
‘니커슈어’가 흡연보조제 역할을 하고 있는데, ‘퍼스트 스텝’은 담배모양과 같은 스틱 형태의 금연보조제다. 구토나 피부트러블을 유발하는 껌, 패치 형태의 금연보조제가 갖는 단점을 극복하기 위한 제품이다. 4개가 1세트로, 약 1달 만에 니코틴 의존에서 벗어날 수 있도록 되어 있다. 미국 제조사인 니커슈어 유한책임회사에서 제조생산하고 ‘퍼스트 스텝’의 한국 진출사업을 앞두고 한국의 엘제이라이니(주)와 양해각서(MOU)를 체결한 상태다. 기존제품과 비교해 한국 내 시장 잠재력이 크다. 

앞으로 출시될 제품들과 제품개발 상황은? 
미국 본사 기준으로 생산된 제품은 니코틴의 농도를 기계자동화장치로 엄격히 제어하고 있어 안전하다. 앞으로 부작용과 불편함을 줄인 껌이나 이쑤시개처럼 더욱 다양한 형태의 금연보조제품을 출시하게 될 것이다.

What’s the current market condition in Korea and what’s your prospect?
It is sold in many retail shops and we are planning to supply it to Korean Army bases after successfully launching in US Army bases in Korea. We are targeting the smokers who tend to smoke in a limited space like taxi drivers. As Korean government is introducing more tougher rules to smokers, we are expecting to see an increased demand for NicAssure. 

What is your new product First Step?
If NicAssure is an alternative cigarette, First Step is a non-smoking aid which improved the side effect of the existing products like nausea and skin troubles caused by gums or patches. Each package contains 4 First Step and you can quit smoking within a month. We have signed a MOU with LJ Liney for selling First Step in Korea and we think that Korean market has a huge potential for the product. 

What are your future products?
All of our products are very safe as the amount of nicotine is controlled by an auto mated system. Currently, we are planning to develop a variety of related products such as gums and toothpick but with much more improved quality.
