Opening a new chapter for mechanical engineering with fusion cooperative research
The Seoul National University of Science and Technology’s Mechanical System and Design Engineering Department combined three departments: mechanical design, automobile engineering and product design mold engineering. Dean of the department Lyu said “Everything we use in our lives is made through mold design and its process. And the design and the process require mechanical engineering which is the core technology to realize various other technologies used in nano, bio and IT. For this reason, the demand for mechanical engineering is increasing recently.”Prof. Lyu majored in machinery for his master’s degree and high polymer engineering for a PhD. Since last June, Prof. Lyu is working on developing 3D printing materials and original technologies as part of a government project. Prof. Lyu came to know about high polymer engineering when he was working for LG Electronics as a researcher. He was involved in a plastic injection molding project and realized the need for researches on machinery and high polymer engineering. Prof. Lyu then studied at The University of Akron (US),where the best polymer-specialized authority in the world Prof. James L. White was teaching, and obtained a PhD. Lyu said “The university is not that famous in name but is the best and unique in the world when it comes to high polymer field with about 300 students studying for a PhD in the field at the university. And I had to give much more effort as I did not have degree in related subjects such as chemistry, high polymer engineering or chemical engineering.”However, Prof. Lyu is creating a unique fusion field by combining machinery and high polymer engineering. He said “People preferred to focus on a single subject from degree to PhD in the past, but it has become a trend to study various fields to pioneer a wider and more effective field.”

Development of original technology that can lead next generation industry
Thus born was the Department of Mechanical System and Design Engineering. Prof. Lyu said “Design and mold should go together. This means that designers need to have knowledge in molding and vice versa in order to realize each other’s goal by 100%. In addition, researches on original technologies are very important for developing new materials. One machine contains a lot of plastic materials and this means that changing a material can significantly reduce the cost or secure a safety or improve the performance.”

Original technology development can also contribute to raising national competitiveness. Polaroid films and sensitized materials used for display, for example, are mostly produced in Japan and we have to pay a considerable amount of royalty. For this reason, Prof. Lyu is working hard on 3D printing materials. It can produce various types of products and has high cost-effectiveness and is regarded as a next generation leader in the manufacturing industry. Prof. Lyu said “3D printing is highly efficient for customized products or small quantity products. But due to the lack of intensity and limited property value, it needs time to be fully applied to various industries.”To improve this problem, Lyu is developing eco-friendly materials with high property value and this can raise Korea’s global status in the field. He won excellent science technology thesis awards twice for his high polymer process and tire shaping researches. Lyu said “There is a slight difference between those who achieved their goals and those not: the former put their ideas and plans into action while the latter did not. With this in mind, I will do my best to contribute to the development of the field in Korea.”
