Resonance of space made of body, emptiness and array
Realizing reality in the body
Sculptor Giwoong Chung

Putting vitality of seeds into work and empting
Making things into a human body shape has been a long tradition in art history. Sculptor Giwoong Chung tells about life “Our body is a living organism which can bear a new life. I express the shape of the body I found and they became gentle and round over repeating the process of compressing and omitting.” Chung compresses the shape into one lump and it resembles a seed. He then named each work as M (male) and F (female) and H (human being). Life at the end of the day loses its form. For this reason, Chung tries simplifying, compressing, splitting and piling to create various shades, angles and space. Thus born was Chung’s work full of life. Unlike other artists who express a clue of their heart and give a meaning to their works, Chung arranges the body like an alchemist. Creating a work for Chung means to embody a life and transmit the divine element of life to reality.

Resonance of human-shaped sculpture coming through digital remodeling
There is a rearranged form in Chung’s works. If you sense elaborate death in works of Damien Hirst, you can sense vitality and reality in works of Chung. Sculptor Chung said “Recently, I use ‘L’ a lot more than ‘M’, ‘F’ and ‘H’ in my works. I used stones and metals to arrange a dubious meaning of vitality and life. I started to feel a sense of creator who made the shape of human body by trying to imitate the process from three years ago.

As a result, I completed L Adam and L Eve.” Like Dr. Frankenstein makes his avatar, Chung did the same but gave more personality through digital modeling. Chung paid more focus on the body shape rather than the personality that the face can express. Recently, Chung’s works have been displayed at 2015 Sculpturefesta and he said “Photographs are overlapped in a space to be a simplified torso and it looks like a three-dimensional contour. I attached the photographs onto acrylic, glass and polycarbonate to create a work. There might be a slight difference in using a real model so I gathered, instead, the data, remodeled it, mixed it and positioned it at my will.” You might feel awesomeness by seeing the transparent space in different angles as well as symbolism of life in the work.

L series expresses reality through compression, division and emptying
2 dimensional photographs are divided and rearranged 3 dimensionally by Chung and you can see the creation in all positions. There have been many processes from making the shapes of square, round and oval to division and rearrange of each shape. Chung said “I jot down my ideas time to time for my work. I defined human body as a seed. I, as a sculptor, can express my desired images into my creation. I can say in a word that my style is the whole of compressing and emptying.” Meanwhile, Chung is preparing for his solo exhibition sometime next year. In art, creator’s view of the world decides the properties of creations. And Chung does this process by using polycarbonate panel and digitally printed photographs. Power Korea looks forward to seeing more of Chung’s L Adam and L Eve in near future.
