“치매의 근본적인 치료에 도움, 향후 치매 연구에 획기적인 전환점 될 것”

세계적으로도 유례를 찾아볼 수 없는 급격한 고령화를 겪고 있는 한국사회. 고령사회로의 진입이 빨라지고 있는 만큼, 그에 따르는 각종 질환도 커다란 사회적 이슈로 떠오르고 있다. 그 중에서도 뇌신경질환인 치매환자의 증가는 행복했던 가정과 한 개인의 삶을 송두리째 무너뜨리는 가장 위협적인 문제가 되고 있으나, 최근 동의대학교 임상병리학과 현경예 교수 연구팀의  천연물질 ERGO-7이 치매개선에 획기적 전환점으로 떠오르고 있다. 

임상병리학계의 선두 연구그룹을 목표로
보건복지부의 발표에 따르면 현재 국내 치매 환자 수는 약 60만 명. 2030년에는 120만 명에 달할 것으로 추정되고 있다. 이 같은 치매문제는 이미 전 세계적으로 나타나고 있는 현상으로 치매치료제 제약시장은 급격한 성장세를 보이고 있다. 이에 따라 동의대학교 임상병리학과 현 교수가 이끄는 혈액생리실험실은 수년 동안 치매(인지장애)를 개선하기 위해 박사과정 1명과 석사과정 3명, 학부생 3명으로 구성하여 연구에 집중하고 있다. 또한 관련 분야의 우수한 전문인재를 양성함으로써 향후의 임상병리학계를 이끌 선두 주자로 발돋움하고자 노력하고 있다. 

특히 말굽버섯에서 추출한 생리활성물질(ERGO-7)을 세포실험과 인지장애동물모델에 적용, 뇌신경세포의 수복능력과 인지개선효과를 검증하여 특허출원을 완료하고 국제저명저널(SCI) 게재를 앞두고 있는 상황이다. 현 교수는 “ERGO-7 투여는 치매유도 동물모델에서 약 30% 이상의 신경뇌세포의 개선이 확인됐습니다. 저희 연구팀에서는 추후에 검증된 물질의 표적단백질 추적과 임상중개연구를 병행할 계획이며, 신경세포 재생에 직간접적으로 관여하는 인자에 대한 실험과 생리학적 변화를 연구할 계획입니다”라고 밝혔다. 또한 연구팀은 기존의 효능이 알려진 치매관련 치료제와 유사한 교차결합 구조를 가진 천연활성물질들을 선정해 역방향설계실험도 시행할 계획이다. 

인류를 행복하게 만드는 연구가 되어야
동의대 혈액생리실험실의 특징은 질환동물모델유발을 통한 연구에 주력하고 있다는 점이다. 질환동물모델이란 인간의 질병과 유사한 상태의 질병에 걸리도록 만들어낸 동물로서, 이를 활용하면 직접 인체에 실험이 어려운 질환의 규명과 치료법 개발에 보다 검증된 결과를 얻어낼 수 있다. 특히 대다수의 치료제들이 다양한 부작용 탓에 사용에 제약을 받고 있다는 점에서  이는 인체에 안전한 치료약물개발에 효과적인 방법으로 평가된다. 현 교수는 “지금까지 개발된 뇌신경질환 관련 치료제들은 치매의 진행을 약간 늦추거나 증상을 완화할 뿐, 근본적인 병 자체를 치료할 수는 없었습니다. 그에 반해 천연물질에서 추출한 ERGO-7은 인체의 안전성이 확보된 상태로, 향후 연구에 따라 치매치료제 개발에 대한 획기적인 전환점이 될 것으로 기대됩니다”라고 밝혔다.

현 교수는 모든 연구자들에게 있어 장기적인 시야와 포기하지 않는 인내심은 연구 성과를 달성하기 위한 가장 중요한 기본적인 요소라고 강조했다. 또한 자신의 분야에 대한 끊임없는 관심과 의문, 계속적인 공부가 필요하다고 덧붙였다. 그는 “절대 교만하지 말고, 자신의 아이디어를 타인과 공유하며 구체화·체계화하는 자세를 가져야 합니다. 또한 연구가 단지 이론에서 그치는 것이 아니라, 실제 인류의 삶에 기여할 수 있도록 만드는 것이 연구자가 궁극적으로 추구해야 할 목표라고 생각합니다”라고 전했다. 연구란 거듭된 실패 속에서도 쌓아올린 성과라는 벽돌로 사람들의 행복을 위한 작은 집을 짓는 일이라는 현경예 교수. 더 나은 미래와 행복한 다음 세대를 만들기 위해 밤늦도록 꺼질 줄 모르는 이들의 열정에 응원의 박수를 보낸다.

According to the Ministry of Health & Welfare, there are approx. 600,000 dementia patients in Korea. Many of global pharmaceutical companies are keen to develop medicines to cure the disease. To take part, Dongeui University opened Blood Physiology Laboratory in 2013 and the leader Prof. Hyun of the lab and her team, a PhD course student, three masters’ and three degree’s, are actively carrying out R&D to improve dementia (cognitive impairment). She applied ERGO-7 extracted from horseshoe mushroom to cell experiment and the animals with cognitive impairment and proved its effect for improving brain cell recovery and cognitive ability. With this result, she obtained a patent and is preparing to publish the research paper on SCI. Prof. Hyun says “I proved that ERGO-7 improved the brain cell function by 30%. My team is going to pursue the targeted protein and carry out translational clinical research, and experiment & physiological change on factors which affect the regeneration of nerve cell.” Also, the team will appoint natural activation matters that havr similar cross-linking structure with the existing dementia cures and carry out a reverse direction experiment. 

Researches that benefit the world
Dongeui University’s Blood Physiology Laboratory mainly focuses on using animal models for human diseases for its researches. They transfer human diseases to animals to find the cause and cure of various diseases. Considering the fact that most medicines can cause side effects, this method is regarded as a safe method. Prof. Hyun says “The existing cures for brain cell merely delay dementia or improve it without providing fundamental solutions. But ERGO-7 is highly expected to make a turning point depending on the subsequent research directions and is proved to be safe to use.” Lee emphasizes on researchers’ long-term view and tenaciousness for drawing a great result as well as continuous study in the field. She says “It is important for researchers to open their mind and share information and give a shape to their ideas. If a research stops at theory it can be nothing but theory. Action will make it real and contribute to creating a better and healthier life of human being.” Power Korea sends a message of support to Hyun and her team.
