[feature Story] Author Lee Yeong-gil

Author Lee Yeong-gil, a craftsman of our time who has gone on with wood carving for 40 years
Preparing to publish a novel in continued learning

Wood carving is most widely used in our traditional crafts together with stone carving. However, it is not easy to create work by cutting a stump of tree. Following the trace of a breathing tree, sculptor gradually makes an image in agreement to it. As such, we call a sculptor with excellent skills a craftsman. Author Lee Yeong-gil, who has engaged in wood carving for 40 years, still has the artistic spirit of his younger days.

A path of wood carving for 40 years accompanied by efforts and perseverance
Two times of winning in Buddhist exhibition, Non-representational work ‘Memory of light’ in spotlight

Author Lee Yeong-gil, who was born at Shindang-dong, Seoul, started crafts under Lee Jin-hyung, an intangible cultural asset (wood carving craftsman). At that time, he manufactured folkcraft articles chiefly welcomed by Japanese tourists. Author Lee says that while looking on the carving job, it occulted to him that he must learn this skill.

Author Lee, who regretfully refers to himself as ‘not dexterous’, repeated practice after practice to learn carving until wee hours to the point of his hand being peeled and blistered. It must have been a hard job because he had to learn everything from how to read the grain of wood to select a cutter. But in simple determination about efforts, author Lee went on completing his sculpting techniques over years. Now he is a sixty-something man, but he still humbled himself saying that he has many shortcomings as a carving craftsman yet.

Author Lee submitted his work to Buddhist art exhibition two times and they were both accepted. Participation itself must have been an honor because hundreds of work came up from around the country, but he surprisingly won the exhibition both of times. Author Lee also sent his non-representational work ‘Memory of light’ to Ansan Danwon Art Contest and caught attention when it was selected.

‘Memory of light’ is the work made on the basis of his memory of childhood. He had been living in a house without electricity settling for a dim oil lamp or candle light in the darkness of night, but when one day electricity came in, the bright “light” pouring out from the small and round glass bulb was a new world he had never experienced before. Though we now get along lighting up a night like a day, author Lee Yeong-gil worked at it because the memory of the precious light then was so vivid to him when he felt sorry to hear the news of stopping production of the light bulb.

Makes a beautiful work containing the expression of Buddha
Attended Korea National Open University to learn more

Then, author Lee distinguished himself in Buddhist art and professionally worked on the image of Buddha receiving request from temples all over the county. He sincerely completed Buddhist work for Anyang Sammak temple Yookgwaneumjeon, Yeonju hermitage, Yeosoo Hansan temple, Sooncheon Junghoi temple Gobuljaehyun, Hongcheon Soota temple, Seosan Gaesim temple, Mt. Jiri Yeongok temple Jijangjeon, etc. The most memorable in the recent work was to make 500 Buddha’s disciples for Yongam temple, Choonggok-dong. Buddha’s disciples’ building is one of normal temple buildings and it is the place to enshrine Sakyamuni-bul and the saints who earned Arahat.

Especially, making Buddha’s disciples, who are considered able to bless and achieve the populace for their wish, this author carved the looks of 500 disciples all differently by characteristic arousing an overwhelming emotions for lookers. These days, author Lee keeps a topic in his mind, that is, to want to depict reciprocal expression in Buddha’s image. Buddha’s images in our country usually don’t show expressions (feelings) but he is seeking for a bright and sunny telling smile. Or he says that he wants to make work from which ordinary people can feel joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure at the least. Thinking that he is too poor himself to make work of Buddha in sympathy and feeling with believers, he entered this year Korea National Open University department of English literature. “Receiving professional education I found my potential which has been unknown to me,” the author stopped for a moment as if really excited. While working on the report for discussing coincidence and inevitability after seeing the movie ‘Night train to Lisbon,” he started to write and found his talent for writing looking at himself who was ready to develop his thoughts fluently by summarizing the words coming to him.

Writing a novel ‘The Summer in 1392’ (Tentative title) with an aim to publish next year
“Should have changed perception about cultural inheritance and skilled technicians”
Author Lee is writing a novel ‘The Summer in 1392 (Tentative title)’ with a view to publish it next year. He hinted that it is a story about the relationship rising above the limits of man and god in the process of founding the Joseon dynasty. It is a kind of fantasy where the god of mountains, who had helped Lee Seong-gye, received punishment from Heaven and came to lead a hard life repeatedly until modern times. Considering that author Lee is interested in our traditional culture and rational relationship between man and god, the reporter has no doubt that he will produce a notable work. Lately, he is donating his talent at various places, including ancient palaces and royal tombs, and he says that it was striking to see magnificent stonework and the landscape down below when he climbed up a royal tomb. Author Lee said, “It is not good to unconditionally block our cultural inheritances but we should make a passage, or if it is hard, we should make a model to allow foreigners to see them. That is the way to make good resources of tourism.”

Author Lee Yeong-gil emphasizes, “It is important to change the perception about skilled craftsman.” As his career of 40 years tells us, his future will be an axis of our country’s Buddhist art. We want to give a cheer to him who is going out for a difficult challenge.
