한국 기독교 인재양성사역의 비전 평가하는 제3회 9.30 컨퍼런스 열려

분당중앙교회(담임 최종천 목사)는 지난 9월 30일(수) 오후 1시 30분 서울 양재동 소재 더케이서울호텔 거문고C홀(구 서울교육문화회관)에서 “분당중앙교회 인재양성사역의 비전과 성과, 그리고 미래를 향한 과제”를 주제로 ‘제3회 9.30 컨퍼런스’를 개최했다. 이 컨퍼런스에는 전국 20여개 신학대와 국내 신학연구기관 및 사회 곳곳에서 소금과 빛의 역할을 감당하고 있는 ‘분당중앙교회 해외장학생 출신’ 교수와 신학분야 전문가 45명을 비롯해 교계 관계자들과 성도들이 참석했다. 이번 컨퍼런스는 국내 기독교계의 대형화와 세속화 속에서도  한 목회자의 일관된 비전과 신념아래 인재양성에 대한 꿈을 펼치고 꾸준히 신앙의 길을 전파하기 위해 노력한 분당중앙교회의 성과가 오랜 결실을 맺는 자리였다.

인재양성의 가치와 평가 널리 알리는 자리 마련해
분당중앙교회의 이번 ‘제3회 9.30 컨퍼런스’는 1991년 분당에 1호 교회로 정착하며 해외  인재양성 사역의 길을 닦아온 24년간의 역사를 총망라하며 오랜 기간 기다려온 과실을 맺는 자리로서 기독교 교회 인재 양성의 롤모델이 되어온 분당중앙교회의 역사를 함께하며 토의를 갖는 과정이었다.

분당중앙교회 기획총무국장 이송배 장로의 사회로 진행된 1부 순서에서는 최종천 목사의 인사에 이어 한국고등신학연구원장 김재현 박사의 경과보고가 있었다. 김재현 박사는 “꾸준한 장학생 선발의 결과 지금까지 선발된 인원 중 80% 정도가 교수직에서 활동하고 있거나 관련 활동을 지속하고 있다”고 밝히며 분당중앙교회의 인재양성사역이 이룬 성과와 나아가야 할 길을 이야기했다.

이어 진행된 2부 세미나는 최종천 목사의 총주제발표 ‘분당중앙교회 인재양성사역의 비전과 성과, 그리고 미래를 향한 과제’를 시작으로 활발한 토의의 장을 열었다. 최종천 목사는 이번 발표에서 분당중앙교회가 개척 설립 이후 지금까지 일관되게 인재양성에 주력해왔음을 강조했다. 최 목사는 분당중앙교회 인재양성사역의 등가원칙으로 사회 오피니언 리더 양성과 건전한 시민양성 두 가지를 꼽고, 20년 가까이 해온 사역으로 배출한 인재들이 각계에서 두각을 나타내 열매가 가시화되고 있는 점, 전 교우들의 마음에 인재양성의 꿈을 공고히 한 점, 인재양성은 긴 호흡으로 가야 한다는 이해를 공유하고 심는 것을 기뻐하는 인식을 조성한 점 등을 현재적 평가로 꼽았다.

장학생 출신 신학교수들 주제발표 이어가
한국교회에 인재양성에 대한 관심 촉구해
최 목사의 주제발표에 이어 분당중앙교회 장학생 출신 신학교수들의 분야별 발표가 있었다. 먼저 ‘인재양성사역의 성경적 의미(구약)와 신학발전’을 주제로 발표한 총신대학교 김희석 교수는 “부모의 마음으로 인재를 기르고자 하는 교회의 실천적 결단이 필요하다”고 말했다. ‘인재양성사역의 성경적 의미와 신학 발전(신약성경을 중심으로)’를 발표한 장신대학교 이두희 교수는 “신약성경은 예수님을 통해 선포된 희망의 복음, 구원의 복음, 하나님나라의 복음을 위해 사역한 세례 요한, 열두 제자와 사도들, 교회 공동체의 이야기”라고 말했다.

이어 ‘인재양성사역의 인류애적 가치와 사명-예수의 인재양성 모델의 적용’을 발표한 총신대학교 신현우 교수는 신학자와 목회자만이 아니라 사회 각 영역과 소외되고 멸시받는 이들을 위한 인재양성의 필요성을 제기했다. ‘인재양성에 관한 한국교회의 과제와 도전-베드로전후서를 중심으로’를 발표한 백석대학교 채영삼 교수는 “교회 성장은 예수 믿는 한 사람 한 사람의 치유와 회복과 성장과 성숙”이라고 말했다.

마지막으로 당일 참가자 일동은 총신대학교 정창욱 교수의 발의로 ‘인재양성에 관한 관심과 지원을 촉구하는 한국교계와 한국사회에 보내는 메시지’를 채택했다. 참석자들은 인물을 키워내지 않고서는 하나님나라의 참된 가치가 이 땅에서 결코 구현될 수 없다, 외형에 투자하는 일을 지양하고 말이 아닌 행동으로 사람 키우는 일에 힘을 쏟아야 한다, 교회에 직접적 관련이 있거나 유익을 주는 인재의 양성을 위해서만 재정을 지출하려는 자세를 지양해야 한다는 내용 등을 한국교회와 한국사회 앞에 선언했다.

교파와 소속에 관계없이 장학생 지원 이어가
3회째 세미나와 컨퍼런스 통해 한국교회의 나아갈 길 제시
분당중앙교회는 1991년 설립 이후 2년 단위로 1~6기 해외 장학생을 선발했고, 지금까지 총 50억원 상당의 장학금을 지급한 바 있다. 분당중앙교회의 장학생 선발은 교회 출신 장학생을 우선적으로 선발하여 기회를 주는 방식이 아니라, 전국적인 공모를 통해 교파와 소속에 관계없이 우수한 학생들을 공모 받아 진행했다. 그 결과, 장학생으로 선발된 인원 중 분당중앙교회 소속은 10% 미만에 불과했다. 그리고 이제는 분당중앙교회 장학생으로 선발되었던 1~6기 장학생들이 사회 곳곳에서 한국 기독교를 이끌어가고 있다 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.

현재까지 선발된 장학생은 다수의 국내 장학생과 6기에 걸쳐 선발된 해외 장학생 141명이다. 그 중에서 박사학위 소유자만 100명이 넘고 신학 관련 교수로 진출한 인재 역시 많다. 분당중앙교회 장학생 출신 교수진이 가장 많이 진출한 총신대학교는 전체 교수 정원의 10% 이상인 11명이 분당중앙교회 장학생으로서 이들은 어려운 환경 속에서 학업에 임하고 있는 후배들을 위한 정기장학금을 조성하기도 해 한국교회에 큰 반향을 일으켰다.

분당중앙교회는 지난 2013년부터 매년 9월 30일 세미나와 컨퍼런스를 통해 한국교회가  참된 가치로 승화시켜나갈 부분과 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하고 있다. 2013년 제1회 ‘위기의 한국교회, 어떻게 지켜갈 것인가’, 2014년 제2회 ‘한국교회가 지향해야 할 새로운 가치-사회 기여와 공헌, 그리고 기부’에 이어 올해 ‘인재양성사역의 비전과 성과, 그리고 미래를 향한 과제’에 이르기까지 한국교회의 성장에 대한 깊은 고민을 함께 나누고 토의하는 자리를 마련해온 것이다.

인문사회․언론분야 인물 육성해 기독교적 세계관 양성할 것

최 목사는 “향후 20년 동안 인재양성에 200억 원을 사용한 뒤 역사의 평가를 받겠다”고 발표한 바 있으며, 분당 서현동 소재 교회 소유 토지 6천여 평을 기부함으로써 장학기부계획을 완료한 바 있다. 또한 “전 교인에게 1인 1장학금, 장학재단 설립, 유산 십일조를 통한 개인장학재단 설립 교육 등을 진행하고 있으며, 신학계에서 뿐만이 아니라 인문사회․언론분야의 인물을 집중적으로 육성해 기독교적 세계관을 퍼뜨리는 중추적인 역할을 수행할 것”이라고 말했다.

최근 한국 기독교는 외형 확장에 치중하며 기독교적 가치관의 본모습을 찾아보기 힘들게 변해가고 있으며 이러한 점들 때문에 안팎으로 자성의 목소리가 높아지고 있는 실정이다. 한국 교회가 바로 서기 위해서는 무엇보다 기독교적 가치관을 재정립하고 하나님의 뜻을 널리 전파해 바른 인재를 키울 수 있는 선도자가 절실히 필요할 것이다. 분당중앙교회는 6기에 걸친 장학생 선발과 3년에 걸친 컨퍼런스 개최 등으로 국내 기독교 교회 인재 양성의 롤모델 역할을 수행하고 있으며 향후 교계의 모범, 사회의 모범으로서 다각적인 활동을 전개할 예정이다. 이러한 성과로 인해 이 시대와 역사 속에서 분당중앙교회 최종천 목사가 이루어갈 진정한 목회자로서의 행보에 더욱 큰 기대를 걸게 된다.

Spreading the value of talent development
Bundang Central Presbyterian Church is the first church founded in Bundang in 1991. The church has fostered talented people for the last 24 years and the 3rd 9.30 Conference this year was to assess the church’stalent development mission. The first part of the event was hosted by a presbyter Songbae Lee (head of planning) and pastor Choi gave an opening speech and Dr. Jaehyeon Kim (Director of KIATS- Korea Institute for Advanced Theological Studies) presented the development of the missionary work. Dr. Kim said “As a result of our continuous support for scholarship students, 80% of them are now working as a professor.”In the second part of the event, pastor Choi presented the subject ‘The result, vision and task of Bundang Central Presbyterian Church’s Talent Development’. Choi emphasized the fact that the church has consistently fostered talented people since its foundation. Choi accentuated on two things: fostering opinion leaders and law-abiding citizens. Choi highly praised the fact that the church has fostered numerous talented people thanks to the believers’ active support.

Pastor Choi’s presentation of the subject was followed by the presentations from scholar holders turned professors. Under the title ‘The Biblical (Old Testament) Meaning of Talent Development Mission and Theology Development’,Prof. Heesuk Kim of Chongshin University said that church’s determination and implementation to foster talented people is much needed. Prof. Duhee Lee from Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary, under the subject ‘The Biblical (New Testament) Meaning of Talent Development Mission and Theology Development’, said that the New Testament was the story about missionary work of John the Baptist, 12 Disciples and apostles and ecclesial community. Prof. Hyeonwoo Shin from Chongshin University gave a title ‘Humanitarian Value of Talent Development Mission and Application of Jesus’s Talent Development Model’and said that churches need to foster talented people not only for missionary work but also for our society. Prof. Youngsam Chae of Baekseok University, with the subject ‘Task and Challenge of Korean Church for Talent DevelopmentMission - Based on The First& Second Epistle St. Peter’ said that development of church means each believer’s spiritual healing, recovery, growth and maturity. Lastly, Prof. Changwook Jeong from Chongshin University adopted a resolution: Message to Korean Church and Society to Support Talent Development Mission. They all emphasized the importance of fostering talents who will realize the Wordof God as well as Korean church’s contribution to society. 

Equal scholarship for all students regardless their background
Yearly seminar and conference to suggest direction for Korean church
Since its establishment in 1991, Bundang Central Presbyterian Church has awarded a $5M worth scholarshipon a 2 year basis for talented students to study overseas. Students are selected through fair and open screening regardless their religious order and background. Only around 10% of the scholarship students belong to Bundang Central Presbyterian Church yet they are actively engaged in leading Korean church. Alongside several domestic scholarship holders, 141 students studying abroad have received benefit from the church. More than 100 among them obtained a PhD and many are working as a professor at the moment. 11 professors (10%) at Chongshin University, in particular, are from Bundang Central Presbyterian Church and they independently raise scholarship fund to help talented students in financial need. Meanwhile, the church has held a seminar and conference every September 30th since 2013 to suggest direction for Korean church. The first event in 2013 was titled as ‘Crisis of Korean Church, What Should Be Done?’ and the second in 2014 as ‘New Value for Korean Church to Pursue and Social Contribution’ and this year as ‘Result and Vision of Talent Development Mission and Future Task’.

Talents in humanity, society and media to spread the Christian view of the world

Pastor Choi said that he would donate $20M for talent development mission for the next 20 years and donated a 19,800 square meter land (belongs to a church in Seohyeon-dong, Bundang) for it. He said “I educate each believer to support scholarship for one student and to build private scholarship foundation by donating 1/10 of their wealth. But more importantly, Iwill focus on fostering talents in the areas of humanity, society and media in order to spread the Christian view of the world.”It is regretful that many Korean churches are concentrating on their external development. This is the point where we need leaders who can foster right talents. Bundang Central Church has run 6 terms of awarding scholarship and 3 years of holding seminar and conference in pursuit of talent development mission and has become a role model for Korean church and society.
