Fostering talented manpower who will lead the root industry of Korea
Strengthening industrial competitiveness through industry-academic cooperation
Seungkyun Hyun, the Head of Inha University's Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Team

Securing growth engine through industry-academic cooperation
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced June last year to push forward ‘Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Project’ in order to foster talented manpower through industry-academic cooperation. The ministry appointed Inha University alongside Gyeongsang National University and Chosun University to carry out the project. Subsequently, Inha University opened a Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering by combining the departments of New Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering in July 2014 and secured 12 industry employed staff whose skills cover from cast, plastic working, welding, heat & surface treatment. This year, the university appointed 13 new students and 2 of employed staff (total 27 students) and is providing them a quality training based on a full government scholarship. For this, the team is strengthening the retraining programs for employees as well as improving industry capability and product competitiveness.

Seungkyun Hyun, the head of the team said “We are focusing on securing new students in this term. We will invite talented students to the team (Root Technology Engineering Department) through company’s open recruitment and a continuous advertisement and actively increase the number of participating students and companies.” Also, the team is planning to strengthen training for joint research, dissertation and patent as well as work experience.

Optimized training customized for business environment
Systematic training is very important to foster students equipped with research capability and executive ability. For this reason, the team uses and improves both the degree and graduate school curriculum of New Materials Engineering as well as develop new subjects that can coincide with its educational direction. The team also uses and improves 8 subjects including Metal Thermodynamics, Physics-metallography, Casting Engineering and Plasticity Processing. In addition, the team is running Metal Joint Engineering, Metal Electrochemistry, Machine Analysis Practice, Casting Simulation Specialization, Cast Specialization, and Powder Sintering Specialization which are all customized to industry demands. Hyun said “Each subject reflects special knowledge, research capability and industry demand. We also reflect market demand when developing new subjects and invites industry specialists for lectures in order to provide students with down-to-earth knowledge and field experience.”

The team also invites professionals of root industry for various lectures, seminars and forums in order to provide students with the latest information and market trend, and students can also participate in technology exchanges and meetings held by companies.

The team and Inha University’s Research Institute of Standards and Analysis use 56 equipments worth 8.1 billion won ($8M) for training. Mentors with average 12.3 years of experience in the field are passionately providing on-the-job training, on-site training, and research equipment engineer training.

Win-win training for both students and industry
Inha University's Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Team held Scholarship Presentation Ceremony on 25 February. Participated students, professors and industry officials showed a great satisfaction on the achievement of the team and said that the training programs played a great role to provide a winwin situation for both students and industry. Seungbaek Yu (26), who is an intern for Dong Yang Piston (car engine parts production), became a graduate student by recommendation of the company. Yu said "I can learn things in detail which I couldn't at the undergraduate level and I can work at the same time. Also, I don't need to worry about my employment as I'm promised to work for the company in plastic working sector in full time after graduation." Junggeun Lee, the team leader of the company said "it is effective that professors and students carry out researches and practical training in accordance with the industry."

The six fields of the root industry include mold, cast, welding, plastic working, surface treatment and heat treatment. To promote the root industries, Inha University's Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Team is providing down-to-earth training for students while supplying talented manpower for industries. Power Korea hopes that the team will contribute to the development of the root industry in Korea.
