Research on restoring forest environment for pleasant life of future mankind
- “Will strive for a healthy restoration of the forest ecosystem.”
Ma Ho-seop, Gyeongsang University, head of the task force for restoring forest ecology

As everyone knows, ‘developing industries’ and ‘conserving nature’ are essentially incompatible. However, considering that both are indispensable for human life and existence, balancing between the two is a matter of consequence. Accordingly, the government has sought for diverse ways to conserve forests while supporting research projects for developing relevant technologies.

A leading domestic research group in developing technologies for restoring ecology
Gyeongsang University task force for restoring forest ecology was opened in December 2012 when the group was selected by the Office of Forestry for the basic research support project in forest science. The task force has been devoted to in-depth research on developing the technology and eco-friendly materials for restoring ecology and rearing excellent manpower expected to lead the development of green industry. Consisting of 15 professors and 45 graduate and undergraduate students, currently the task force has research teams focusing on four core projects – Developing technology for restoring ecology and plants for re-vegetation in forest development area,’ ‘developing technology for restoring ecology in special forest development area,’ ‘developing technology for restoring forest ecology in urban area,’ and ‘developing technology for restoring forest view ecology in tunnel pitheads and eco-friendly materials.’ Especially recently, they are directing their energies toward developing a new restoration technology for the ecological axis of the forest area disappearing by developing stony mountains and the damaged land in Baekdu-daegan zone, mountain moors, landslide area caused by precipitation, and tunnel entrances caused by creating roads. Ma Ho-seop, head of the group, explained, “Research of the task force is focused on analyzing the causes and types of damaged land and developing restoration technology for increasing biodiversity of forest and enlarging the continued possibility for conserving forests through research on recovering the soundness and health of the restored kinds of trees.”

Marking the fourth year since its opening, the group has created a diversity of results following the four core projects. Its research papers have been carried in distinguished journals at home and abroad, including Korean Forest Society, Korean Society of Wood Science & Technology, Forests and Ecological Engineering. Professionals with master’s and doctor’s degrees cultivated through the task force have also been employed by research institutes, such as Korea Forest Research Institute, Korea National Arboretum and National Institute of Ecology. Five papers on forest soil management will be published in this October at the International Wildland Fire Conference to be held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, while the task force is actively making academic exchange through seminar, workshop and symposium.

Will be devoted to developing ecologically sound restoration technology
Group Head Ma Ho-seop clarified, “Currently, our task force is driving the process of R&D, academic-industrial cooperation, cultivation of manpower, etc. in stages. Besides this year’s new project of developing models for restoring forest view at tunnel entrance, we are planning to develop ecologically sound restoration technologies, such as maintaining slope stability for forest development area and increasing fine views, using the research team’s ideas and technology.” He added that they are preparing guidelines for restoration and manuals in terms of the development and conservation of forests.

Restoring damaged land is one of the twenty goals resolved by the Conference of Parties to the biodiversity convention in 2010 and a core agenda for international management of natural environment. Unlike advanced countries which are carrying on active research, however, our country has shown some gap in core technology due to the lack of concerns and research with the relevant field. Group head Ma said, “As to restoring ecology, it has taken a considerable effort and time to work out the lack of professionals and networking, small scale of related companies, absence of technology and information. Especially, I had some difficulty leading the task force because there were diverse contents demanded for restoring forest ecosystem and different opinions from expert to expert.” He also expressed his regret that the period for executing research is somewhat short although it is essential to establish a long-term research plan and monitoring.

‘Unconditional protection of forests’ must be a subject rather different from the reality of modern society which is advancing fast. What is more important is the worry about how to use and conserve the forest efficiently for sustainable development of human kind.

It is the aim of Gyeongsang University task force in restoring forest ecology to restore the forests damaged by reckless development following industrialization and urbanization and make the result ultimately contribute to the pleasant life of human kind. We give cheers and applause for their efforts to open a better future through developing diverse restoration technologies for damaged land.
