Opening limitless future for children
Leading the innovation of childhood education in Jinju City
Principal Yanghee Park of Jinju Ban-Ya Nursery School

Being children for children-centered education
Principal Yanghee Park of Jinju Ban-Ya Nursery School majored in childhood education, art education and consultation. He obtained a PhD in education and has been exerting his effort in the development of personality education. Park emphasizes on the virtue of one’s personality and the harmony of teacher, children, parents and the nursery school. For this reason, Park pays a great attention to understanding children’s psychology and family background. He said “Personality education can only be achieved by teachers setting up a role model for filial piety, consideration, sharing, concession and respect.” The walls of Ban-Ya Nursery School is full of children’s drawings and paintings. Based on art education and analysis on children’s behavior, the nursery draws sociality from children and the program called ‘EM Clay Experience with Senior’, provided in connection with Jinju Senior Club, imbues children with appreciation of nature, respect and wisdom for living together.

The nursery also uses the nearby forest for its programs so that children are always surrounded by nature. Park said “Books are the best friends of children. Children learn the color sense and language even by watching the book cover and share the feeling and boost creativity and self-expression through reading it.” For this reason, Ban-Ya Nursery School emphasizes on quality reading rather than quantity. Park continued “Children do not feel bored even after reading the same book several times because each reading gives each different feeling. Jinyang Library nearby the nursery is like our children’s playground as it has a lot of book surrounded by the forest.”

Nursery schools are for early childhood education
Childhood education in Korea has experience many turns and twists. Despite our 110 years history of private nursery schools, it is not providing satisfactory education for teachers, children and the parents. Ban-Ya Nursery School is located in Munsan-eup, Jinju City but its curriculum is second to none when compared with the capital area. Park values high the quality of education rather than the size of the nursery and the numbers of children. Park only focuses on one thing: providing satisfactory education for all three parts: teachers, children and the parents. Park said “I’m also serving as chairman of Jinju Private Nursery School Association. In accordance with the Mayor’s slogan of ‘Jinju, The city of The Best Educators and Education’, the association will do its best to create practical and effective education for children.”

Park has devoted his life to education for a long time. He feels really worth when he sees the children he taught (now fathers and mothers) send their children to nursery schools. Park looks back those times in which he poured his passion for the children, and now as adults, they showed a great respect to him. Park said “Stars are beautiful because the sky is dark. If children are the stars, I and our teachers are the dark sky that make them twinkling.”
