The first mover of sustainable construction technology
A new concept research for future generation
Director Prof. Jae-Hyouk Choi of Chosun University’s Smart Green Construction Technology Development Basic Research Laboratory

Leading the development of eco-friendly construction technology
Chosun University’s Smart Green Construction Technology Development Basic Research Laboratory (the lab) carries out researches on the whole concept of CO2 emission, waste and recycle of a building as well as creating a new concept ‘Fabricable Construction System’. It also studies on securing the quality of a building, Sensing-based Recycle Management Technology, and evaluation for construction’s economic feasibility. Generally speaking, it is the fate of a building to be dismantled at the end of the day but many builders tend to ignore the fact and just focus on building construction itself.

The good news is that the lab provides ways to improve this problem. Director Prof. Choi of the lab said “It is urgent for builders to use ‘Fabricable Construction System’ with which they can assemble and dismantle a building freely. The system requires ‘Long-life Technology’ that can enable the reuse of the building in the member level, and ‘Non-damage Guarantee Technology’ that can guarantee the building within the boundary of an elastic limit based on Damage Detection Technology.” Also important is ‘Physical Distribution Management Technology’ that can build a data base about construction materials for the reuse of member (intensity, breakdown characteristic, member detail, size and location) to pass it down to the next generation.

From research to excellent results
Many countries are pushing forward sustainable building projects in order to reduce environmental damages. With the support of WTO, US, OECD and ISO, those countries are actively carrying out R&D under the subject of LCA to reduce CO2 and are introducing related regulations. In accordance with this global atmosphere, Prof. Choi and the lab is accelerating both quantitative and qualitative growth. The lab was selected as BRL (Basic Research Laboratory) from the National Research Foundation of Korea in 2011 and has carried out a two-level project for 5 years. During the last three years (first level: September 2011 – August 2014), the lab produced 34 papers (29 published on domestic academic journals), has applied for 45 patents (13 in Korea, 1 obtained an international patent), and 26 among them have secured registered original technology. Also, the lab has fostered 17 students with a master’s degree and/or PhD who are actively engaged in the field at the moment and they also showed excellent performance at BIM (Building Information Modeling International Competition) held in Singapore.

In addition, the lab’s part of element technologies actually has been transferred to the industry (worth $40,000) and it is being used in 5 construction sites to generate $2M sales. In 2014, the lab provided technological advice for building a local court, and, in July 2015, transferred ‘Smart Green Core Technologies for Building Structural Vibration Control’ (3 patents, 2 design patents, worth $50,000) to regional construction industries.

Green-Tech is a must for construction technology
The environmental damages occurred during the construction of buildings generates 30% - 40% greenhouse gas emission. With the impending implementation of related regulations, many experts predict that a new concept and type of construction will be introduced. To make the prediction more probable, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement introduced a vision ‘Green Innovation’ for the future direction of R&D and ‘Green-up 30 (30 core future technologies)’ as new growth engine. Also, the government announced to invest $107B (2% of GDP) between 2009 and 2013 and predicted that it would generate $182B - $206 (3.5% - 4% of GDP) production inducement effect. Prof. Choi said “Japan, for example, is experiencing an increasing number of cases to remodel the building rather than dismantle it or build a new building as the former option is much more cost effective.” Choi suggested ‘Reduce’, ‘Reuse’ and ‘Recycle’ as ideal alternatives for the construction industry.

Expanding the scope of research on smart green construction
Japan and many countries in Europe are preparing to commercialize ‘Reuse’ policy for both environmental and economic reasons. Korea also shows a keen interest and the development of related technology is being carried out. In accordance with this global trend, the lab published special articles in the academic journal of the Korea Institute of Building Construction under the tile of ‘Development of Smart Green Construction technology for Member Reuse’, which include ‘Composition of Fabricable Construction System (Prof. Jaehyeok Choi)’, ‘Long-life of Building Structure & Damage Detection Technology (Prof. Jeongwoong Park)’, ‘Sensing-based Total System Development (Prof. Sukseung Hwang)’, ‘Eco-friendly High Performance Fiber Cement Complex Precast Slab / Wall System Smart Green Construction Technology (Prof. Changgeun Jo)’ and ‘Economic Feasibility & Performance Evaluation for Smart Green Structure System (Pof. Gyuman Jo).

These five research results explained the basic conceptions and solutions of building construction and they attracted a great attention from academic circles. Meanwhile, Prof. Choi is planning to carry out a mock-up building project to actualize the possibilities of smart green construction in detail. He said “Smart Green Construction Technology Development Research is an unprecedented and unique research model in terms of ‘design for disassembly’. It is a highly innovative and challenging research which will enable us to secure one-step-ahead construction technology.” Power Korea hopes that Choi and Chosun University’s Smart Green Construction Technology Development Basic Research Laboratory will greatly contribute to the development of a new innovative eco-friendly construction technologies in Korea and in the world.
