국민에게 사랑받고 존경받는 열린 학회가 될 터

대한민국 건축업의 역사는 곧 대한민국 경제성장의 역사이다. 산업화를 일구기 위한 인프라는 건축업의 발전 없이는 불가능하며, 이는 한국경제의 태동이 건축업에서 시작됐다고 봐도 무방한 이유이다. 이에 (사)한국건축시공학회는 2001년 창립 이래 우리나라 건축업의 발전과 성장을 도모하며, 대한민국 경제가 제2의 도약을 이뤄낼 토대를 마련하는 데에 주력해왔다.

적극적인 교류로 학회 네트워크 기반 구축
(사)한국건축시공학회는 건축물의 생산과 시공기술에 관련된 시방과 기준에 관한 연구, 정부와 공공기관 및 산업계가 시행하는 건축물 시공 관련 사업에 대한 기술·품질·안정성의 평가, 국내·외 관련단체와의 학문과 기술교류 및 발전·보급 등의 역할을 수행하며 건축시공 분야의 기술개발과 시공기술에 관한 유기적인 협력 및 발전이 가능하게 하는 토대를 마련하고, 급변하는 세계 건축시장을 선도할 시공능력을 배양하는 계기를 마련하고자 창립되었다. 현재 회원수가 4,000여 명에 달하는 중견학회로 성장한 (사)한국건축시공학회는 다양한 건축시공기술의 개발과 연구를 위한 학회논문집을 발간하는 등 국내 최고의 전문가들이 모인 한국 건축시공기술의 메카로 자리매김하고 있다. 

지난 1월 제8대 회장으로 선출된 강경인 회장(고려대학교 포스코 석좌교수)은 30여 년간 학계에 몸담으며 국내·외에 걸친 폭넓은 경험과 네트워크를 쌓아왔다. 특히 산·관·학·연의 목소리에 귀를 기울이며 무엇보다 ‘소통과 교류’에 기반한 학회 발전을 추구하고 있는 강 회장은 타 학회와의 유기적인 협력관계를 유지함과 동시에 각종 기술 세미나 등을 통한 정보 공유화를 이룩하고자 노력하고 있다. 그는 “학회 활동의 근본은 회원들의 힘을 한 데 모아 학계 및 산업계와 소통하며 건축업 전반의 발전에 기여하는 것이라 생각합니다”라고 말하며 학회의 대내·외적인 네트워크 활동을 강화하는 한편, 학술 및 연구 활성화와 학회논문집의 위상 제고, 상설위원회 중심의 내실 있는 학회 활동 등을 통해 국내 건축업계를 대표하는 학술기관으로서의 역할에도 충실하고 있다고 답했다. 

실용기술 연구를 통해 산업발전 이끌어
한국건축시공학회 활동의 핵심사항 가운데 하나는 바로 실용적인 시공기술에 대한 연구다. 강경인 회장은 “학회에서는 단순 연구에 그치는 것이 아닌 실용화로 확대될 수 있는 연구를 위해 세미나와 기술 강좌를 꾸준히 기획·개최하고 있습니다. 주로 새로운 시공기술의 적용사례, 현업에서의 기술적 문제점, 연구·개발된 신기술 사례 등의 주제를 다루고 있으며, 산·학·연 다양한 분야의 전문가들이 참석해 의견을 나누는 장이 되고 있습니다”라고 설명했다. 

이러한 행사 개최는 연구자에게는 실무적 관점에서의 의견을 연구에 반영할 기회가 되고 있으며, 현업에 종사하는 전문가들에게는 현장에서의 기술적 애로사항 해결에 효과적인 실마리를 제공하고 있다. 공학계열에 속하며 실용성이 강조되는 건축시공의 특성상, 학회의 학술적 역할은 산업 발전을 위해 무엇보다도 중요한 요소이다. 특히 산·학·연·관의 관련 분야에 종사하는 다수의 전문가 및 학생들로 구성된 학회의 학술적 역할 강화는 다각적 관점에서의 의견이 수렴돼 연구 활성화에 크게 이바지할 수 있다. 이에 학회에서는 연 2회 학술발표대회 및 시공기술대전을 개최하고 있다. 또한 회원들이 수행하고 있는 연구과제에서 창출된 우수 성과들을 주제로 세미나를 개최하고 있으며, 학회 자체에서도 산업체 및 공공기관의 기술자문, 현황조사, 지침 개발 및 개선 등의 연구용역을 수주하여 자체적 연구 활동을 활발히 수행하고 있다.

국가발전에 이바지하는 학회의 역할에 충실할 터
올 초, 학회에서는 제2롯데월드 주차장 바닥균열에 대한 조사 및 검증 자문을 시행한 바 있다. 국민들의 이목이 크게 집중됐던 사안이었기에 학회의 역할과 책임 또한 막중했다. 강경인 회장은 “당시 학회는 관련분야 전문가들의 자문과 표본 코어링 등의 현장조사를 바탕으로 해당 사안에 대한 구조안전성을 객관적으로 분석하여 발표했습니다. 안전사고와 싱크홀 등의 문제로 국민들의 불안감이 가중된 상황이라 더욱 신중에 신중을 기했습니다”라고 밝혔다. 이처럼 학회는 사회적으로 주목받고, 문제가 제기되는 이슈에 관한 적극적인 자문 등을 통해 국민들의 이해를 돕고 사회적 안정을 가져오는 일에도 기여하고 있다. 

끝으로 강 회장은 “(사)한국건축시공학회를 통해 국민들에게 정확한 정보를 제공함으로써 건설업에 대한 불신을 해소하고, 올바른 이해를 돕는 데에 최선의 노력을 다하겠습니다. 아울러 국민으로부터 사랑받고 건설업 종사자들로부터 존경받는 학회가 되었으면 합니다”라고 강조했다. 이를 위해 학회는 논문집의 SCI 등재를 지속적으로 추진하는 한편, 국민들의 눈높이에 맞춘 수준 높은 건축시공품질을 위한 분야별 전문서적을 발간해 나갈 계획이다.

최근 국내건설업은 장기적인 불황과 부실공사 등의 문제로 국민들의 불신이 커져가고 있다. 하지만 과거, 해외 진출을 통해 외화를 벌어들임으로써 국가 위기 극복에 기여하고, 눈부신 산업화와 이를 위한 인프라 구축에 공헌한 것 또한 건설업임을 잊어서는 안 된다. 5년 내 회원 1만 명의 ‘대한민국 대표학회’, 우수한 연구·학술인력을 활용해 ‘국제적으로 인정받는 학회’가 되고자 하는 (사)한국건축시공학회. 그들의 포부가 국민들의 지속적인 성원과 관심, 참여 속에 눈부신 결실을 맺을 수 있기를 기대한다.

Active exchange to build academic network
KIC was established to research on building construction and its technology, evaluate the stability of construction technology and quality, promote academic and technology exchanges and its development and distribution, and foster builders’ construction capabilities. It has 4,000 members including top specialists in Korea and is regularly publishing academic journals. Chairman Gyeongin Kang (8th chairman, chair-prof. at Korea University POSCO) has devoted his life in the academic world for 30 years and built wide range of experience and networks. He values communications and exchanges high in leading the institute and is exerting his effort in building cooperative relationships with other organizations through various seminars and sharing of technologies. Kang said “My job is to closely work together with the members and related institutes and industries in order to contribute to the development of Korea’s architectural construction industry. I’m going to strengthen both home and global network and research works and their quality as well as secure our leading role in the industry.”

Leading the development of the industry through practical research 
One of the core tasks of KIC is down-to-earth research. Kang said “KIC only carries out practical researches and holds various seminars and technical courses on a regular basis with the subjects such as case studies on new construction technology, technical problems in the field, introducing new research and developed technologies. Specialists from many different fields are participating in the programs and they actively share each other’s opinions.” The programs help researchers reflect their opinions in the research and field workers find ways to solve problems. Construction basically belongs to the field of engineering yet its practicality is much emphasized. For this reason, the role of KIC is very important as the specialists from academy, industry and government bring up ideas, suggestions and solutions from various viewpoints. Currently, KIC is holding conferences and construction technology fairs twice a year respectively and asking technical advice, market analysis, and improvement and development of guidelines from industry and public organizations.

KIC contributes to national development 
KIC recently carried out investigation and verification on the cracks on the surface in the parking lot of the 2nd Lotte World. Kang said “We carried out investigation objectively with the advice of outside specialists and announced our results on the structural safety. We paid close attention as the recent cracks and sink holes are causing public concerns. We are working hard to deliver accurate and honest information to the public and to resolve public’s negative recognition on the Korean construction industry.” KIC is continuously register academic papers to SCI and publishing related books specifically designed for the public. Although the domestic construction industry has bad reputation from the public, it actually carried out many constructions overseas and contributed to national development. To raise the status of KIC as the representative institute in the field, Kang set up a goal to secure 10,000 members within 5 years and promote it to be a global institute.
