삼성물산, 친환경 건축기술 집약된 명품 전시 공간 만들어
건축 과정에도 ‘친환경’을 담았다

충청남도 서천에 위치한 국립생태원은 한반도 생태계를 비롯해 열대, 사막, 지중해, 온대, 극지 등 세계 5대 기후와 그곳에서 서식하는 동식물을 한눈에 관찰하고 체험해볼 수 있는 고품격 생태 연구·전시·교육의 공간이다. 세계는 지금 생태계의 무분별한 훼손으로 멸종 위기종이 급격하게 늘어나고, 기후 변화에 따른 생태계 변화가 심각한 수준에 이르렀다. 국립생태원의 건설을 지휘한 삼성물산 송승헌 현장소장은 이곳의 설립취지에 걸맞은 친환경 첨단공법을 활용해 어디에서도 자랑스럽게 내놓을 수 있는 명품 전시 공간을 만들었다.

삼성물산이 건설을 담당한 국립생태원 ‘에코리움’은 지하 1층, 지상 2층의 연면적 32,550㎡의 초대형 건물이다. 거대한 유리를 이어붙인 외관만 해도 유리온실을 연상시키는 외형으로 압도적인 느낌을 선사하며 사이즈와 모양이 다른 4,500장의 유리가 사용된 초대형 건물이다. 3차원 형태의 지붕 구조를 구현하기 위해 빌딩정보모델링(BIM) 설계를 적용해 건물의 독특한 외관을 만들어냈다.

BIM 설계는 시공관련 정보를 3차원 가상현실로 직접 구현해 2차원의 도면에서 다시 설계에 들어가는 과정을 대폭 줄인 특별한 관리기술로 친환경 에너지 절감형 건축물이나 데이터센터 등의 첨단 기술이 집약된 다양한 건축물을 건립하는 데 매우 유용한 기술이다. 또한 일반적인 고온 공조 난방 시스템을 사용했을 때 식물의 생육에 적합한 환경을 만들어내기 어려운 점에 착안해 당시 국내에는 도입되지 않았던 독일산 ‘창틀난방 시스템’의 원천기술을 활용했다.

창틀난방 시스템은 알루미늄이 아닌 스틸로 만든 수직창틀에 40~45도의 온수를 공급해 복사열을 통해 식물이 자라기에 최적의 환경을 만들 수 있어 대표적인 친환경 시공법으로 널리 알려져 있다. 더욱이 여름에는 기존에 사용했던 순환수를 냉방 용도로 재사용할 수 있어 초기 공사비는 일반적인 경우보다 10% 가량 높지만 차후 30% 이상 난방비를 절약할 수 있는 장점이 있다.

세계 5대 기후를 체험할 수 있는 랜드마크 ‘에코리움’
이처럼 삼성물산이 시공 단계에서부터 ‘친환경’을 최우선 가치로 선택해 시공을 담당한 이유는 ‘환경’과 ‘지구’에 대한 이야기를 담은 국립생태원의 정체성을 지켜내기 위함이었다. 충남 국립생태원은 생태체험관, 초식동물 방목원 등 전시 체험시설부터 멸종위기종 센터 등 연구교육 시설까지 다양한 시설로 구성되어 있으며, 그 중 백미는 역시 세계 5대 기후를 한 곳에 담은 메인 체험관 ‘에코리움’이다.

에코리움은 열대우림 지역에서 자라는 450여 종의 식물과 아마존 강 등에 서식하는 어류, 양서류, 파충류 150여 종 등을 볼 수 있는 열대관, 연평균 강수량 250mm 이하로 450여 종의 선인장과 다육식물, 동물 등을 볼 수 있는 사막관을 볼 수 있다. 또한 지중해성 기후 속에 사는 양서류와 460여 종 식물을 볼 수 있는 지중해관, 제주도 난온대림과 한반도 산악지역을 재현한 온대관, 개마고원과 툰드라 지역 등 한대 기후 생태계를 재현한 ‘극지관’ 등으로 구성되어 국립생태원의 랜드마크로 역할을 다하고 있다.

There is National Institute of Ecology in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province. You can experience Korean ecology, world’s five climates such as tropical, desert, Mediterranean, temperate and polar climates and the animals and plants living in each zone. You can also enjoy various educational programs and exhibitions. Our nature and ecology is much suffering from our thoughtless development and endangered animals keep increasing in numbers.

On site manager Seunghun Song of Samsung C&T Corporation built the National Institute of Ecology with cutting edge eco-friendly methods and created global level exhibition space. Ecorium, for example, is a huge two storey building with a basement built on a 32,550㎡ land. 4,500 in various sizes and shapes of glasses were used to give overwhelming sensation to viewers. Also, Building Information Modeling (BIM) was used to actualize 3D roof. BIM is a special management technology which realizes construction information into 3D virtual reality and is widely used for eco-friendly and energy efficient buildings or data centers. Song also used the original German technology of ‘Window Frame Heating System’, which had not been introduced to Korea then, to make an ideal environment for plants. The system uses steel frames and provides 40°C - 50°C water and plants can grow by radian heat. It also uses used circulation water for cooling in summer. I costs 10% more construction fee but reduces heating bills by 30%. 

Experience world’s five climates at Ecorium
Song built the National Institute of Ecology with eco-friendly design and methods to meet the identity of the institute. It has various facilities including Ecology Experience Hall, Herbivore Pasture, Endangered Species Center but above all Ecorium. You can see 450 species living in tropical rain forest, 150 species of fish, amphibian and retile living in the Amazon (Tropical Hall) and 450 species of cactus, fleshy plants and animals (Desert Hall), 460 species of amphibian and plants living Mediterranean (Mediterranean Hall), Jeju’s warm temperate forest and Korea’s mountainous regions (Temperate Hall) and the Gaema Plateau and tundra region (Polar Hall). For this reason, the Nation Institute of Ecology has become one of landmarks in Korea.
