The world of 'wayu spirit' where reality and painting become one
Wayu landscape painter who makes us recover inner-self through nature
Artist Kina Kim

"Wayu is a spirit of reasoning"
Confucian scholars appreciated landscape paintings by 'lying on their back (wayu)'. One of representative scholars in late Joseon Dynasty Ik Lee said "Wayu means that the body is lying back while the spirit is appreciating and the spirit comes from heart and we can reach everywhere with it."

A landscape painter and theorist in the Period of North and South Dynasties of China Byeong Jeong is known to travel the celebrated mountains throughout his life and appreciated landscape paintings he drew on the wall of his room by lying back in his late years. Wayu for Jeong was a spiritual liberation that can contemplate the world over one's physical limitation. In the same context, rising in the Korean art world is Kina Kim who has reinterpreted wayu in modern terms. Kim sees wayu as a spirit of reasoning. He said "People draw landscape paintings so that they can appreciate them in their own quarters as the paradise in the painting fills their desire for a perfect world."

Kim was born in Namwon and grew up by watching cloud and mist, valleys and brooks of Jirisan Mountain. Kim said "Modern people lead a busy and tired life. If they learn to appreciate landscape paintings, they will ease the pressure and liven up their spirit like our ancestors did."

Actualizing modern landscape paintings over conventional ink-and-wash paintings
Kim was inspired by the style of Inmoon Lee who was as famous as Hongdo Kim in late Joseon Dynasty. But instead of traditional ink-and-wash paintings, Kim actualized modern landscape paintings based on the traditional elements. Especially, the village at the foot of a mountain and a pastoral scenery in his paintings shows 'wayu spirit' of coexistence. Kim uses the Korean five colors (blue, red, yellow, white, black) and Korean ink and color painting to create modern atmosphere in his works. Kim said "Landscape paintings need modern sense and angle. We need new idea and expression rather than continue the rigidity and outdatedness of traditional paintings."

Kim realized his unique style through simple semiabstraction instead of keeping traditional brush of mountains, valleys and rocks. The color effects and vividness of Korean paper against the spreads and depth of traditional landscape paintings in ink gives us freshness. Kim attracted a great attention especially from young people at his solo exhibition 'Wayu Landscape Paintings' held at Insa-dong last August. Kim thinks that the meaning of art works should be found from the audience and for this reason, he has held 4 solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 group and invitation exhibitions including '2015 Korean Art New Wind Exhibition' at KEPCO Arts Center Seoul in September and '2015 Asia Contemporary Art Show' in Hong Kong in October. Currently, Kim is serving as a board director of Korea Art Education Association and vice-principal of Seonyudo Middle School. Kim also gave lectures on art history of Korea and oriental paintings at Kongju National University of Education, Kongju National University and Graduate School at Jeonju University. Meanwhile, Kim is planning to hold an exhibition in Seoul, Jeonju, Shanghai and Singapore.
