도면설계부터 완공까지 완벽함을 추구하는 건축인테리어건축가
‘실내외 친환경 공간을 연출하는 통나무 전원주택, 유럽식 인테리어로 경쟁력을 갖다’

성냥갑을 닮은 거주목적의 집, 인간이 생활패턴을 건물형태에 맞추어 사는 삶. 홍익디자인 최성환 대표는 이 삭막함에서 탈출할 대안을 철골 시멘트집 대신 통나무집에서 찾았다. 미술 디자인과 건축, 실내 인테리어의 협업으로 해외 케이블 시대극에서 볼 수 있었던 고전적인 집에서 로하스를 표방하는 친환경 집까지 구현해내는 하우징 아티스트, 최 대표가 전하는 인테리어와 매력을 알아 본다.

다양한 용도의 통나무 전원주택, 친환경적 건축&디자인 랑데부 
물 좋고 공기 좋은 춘천에는 ‘통나무집 개척자’로 불리는 홍익디자인의 최성환 대표의 작품이 많이 모여있다. 강원 지역에는 유난히 별장, 카페촌이 휴가철마다 입소문을 타고, 소비 유동인구가 모여 지역의 명소가 경제효과 증대에 도움이 된 성공사례가 많다. 여기에 적지 않게 공헌한 그는 건축계에서 예술성과 실용성 두 마리 토끼를 잡은 건축 인테리어 전문가다. 건축과 유화를 전공한 그는 홍대 대학원 출신으로 파리 아카데미 스쿨에서 실내디자인을 공부했고, 해외여행을 통해 안목을 높이고 적성을 재확인했다고 한다. 그는 YMCA한국학생여행공사의 주선으로 유럽을 시찰했으며 개인적으로 14개국을 돌며 간결하고도 세련된 유럽풍 건축양식을 마음에 담았다. 특히, 2년 간 프랑스 니스 해변 인근 통나무집에서 거주한 경험과 유난히 좋아했던 스위스 전원주택을 한국에서 재현하고자 했다. 그동안 단독주택을 리노베이션하여 인테리어의 새로운 장을 연 최 대표와 함께 한 건물주는 건물의 가치를 인정받으며, 임차인은 개인사업의 이득을 높여 새로운 투자경로를 개척하였다. 

최 대표는 인테리어와 통나무집이 친환경적이면서 개인거주, 상업용도를 모두 충족하기에 건물 도면과 건축이 분리되어서는 안 된다고 한다. “그리는 사람과 짓는 사람이 다르기에 시공에 들어가면 도면을 전면 수정하는 상황이 온다. 그래서 도면을 제작하고, 건물을 완공하는 전 과정을 함께 한다. 현장에서 소통하며 노련해졌고 미적 감각과 이론을 조화시키고자 했다. 목조주택의 가치와 수요가 증가해 유럽식 전원주택을 도입하기 좋은 장소가 서울과 가까운 가평, 접근성이 좋은 청평, 춘천, 태백, 횡성, 화천 등이다.” 

청평댐 상류의 통나무 목조주택을 지을 때도 그러한 철학으로 심혈을 기울였다. “시멘트와 벽돌가옥은 건축자재로 인한 건강문제, 또 20-30년 주기로 재건축을 해야 한다는 단점이 있다. 반면 통나무집은 관리만 잘 하면 100-400년 정도 유지된다고 하는 그는, 통나무는 숨 쉬는 자재라 여름에는 시원하고 겨울에는 따뜻하다고 전했다. 불연소재인 우레탄, 바인더 도료, 목재를 보호하고 색감을 살리는 월드스테인으로 마감처리를 해서 곰팡이나 화재에도 강하다. 전부 통나무인 1형, 통나무와 벽돌을 섞는 2형, 2형에 철제 빔을 장착하는 3형, 3형에 판넬을 포함하는 4형 등 다양하게 시공할 수 있고, 외곽의 자투리땅에도 멋진 집을 만들 수 있다.” 단열, 방수, 방음이 보장되는 친환경건축형태로서 건축기술의 발전으로 30여 평이 약 3달이면 설계부터 완공까지 끝난다. 건축의 인/허가 절차를 숙지하며 원목의 가격대에 맞춰 예산을 편성하고, 내부 인테리어 비용의 포함여부논의 등 복잡한 과정을 고객의 입장에서 친절히 알려주며, 소나무, 잣나무 등 가격대에 비해 품질이 높은 나무를 엄선하기에 건축비를 평당 1백 만 원씩 줄일 수 있다. 최근에는 평당 건축비가 400만 원이 되지 않는 주택을 성공적으로 완공했다.

특히 요구가 많은 벽난로, 북유럽 풍 각진 삼각지붕 아래 3층 다락방과 동화 같은 발코니, 테라스 등은 실생활용 주택에 맞도록 현실적인 조언으로 디자인해 장인정신으로 완성한다고 한다. 획일적인 친환경을 예술적으로 업그레이드 한 최 대표의 ‘아티스트 건축’철학으로 건물은 곧 ‘작품’이 되는 것이다. 현재 시공 중인 인천 원당동의 단독주택의 완공이 기대되는 이유도 작품의 탄생이 머지않았기 때문일 것이다. 그는 마지막으로 인테리어도 프로, 건축도 프로라는 자부심과 긍지를 가지고 최고의 작품을 만들기 위해 노력할 것이라고 전했다.

Introducing multi-functional log country house 
Choi is regarded as a pioneer of log house and his unique designs are found in Chuncheon City and Gangwon Province where there are numerous summer houses and cafes. His Uniqueness comes from both artistic value and practicality of the design. Choi majored in architecture and oil painting at Hongik University and studied at Paris Academy School. Arranged by YMCA Korea, he traveled 14 countries in Europe and learned European architecture. He was particularly impressed by log house near the seaside in Nice where he stayed for 2 years and also by Swiss country house.

When he came back to Korea, Choi renovated a detached house and delighted the owners who benefited from this new design and its upgraded value. Choi believes that log house with a good interior is an eco-friendly house that satisfies both private and commercial use. He said "Floor plan and construction should be done by the same designer or company in order to avoid corrections. That's why we do everything from design to completion of the building. We thoroughly communicate with our clients based on our esthetic value and knowledge. Currently, Gapyeong, Cheongpyeong, Chuncheon, Taebaek, Hoengseong and Hwacheon are rising as ideal places to build European log and country houses. Choi took an example of a log house he built in the upper region of Cheongpeyong Dam.

"Concrete and brick houses can cause health problems and need to be rebuilt  every 20 to 30 years. Log houses, on the other hand, can last 100 to 400 years and the log make the house cool in summer and warm in winter. Also, we finish the log with nonflammable urethane, binder paint and worldstain which protects the log and its color from mold. We provide type 1 (100% log), type 2 (log and brick), type 3 (type 2 + steel beam), and type 4 (type 3 + panel)." A 100 square meter log house can be done in 3 months with perfect insulation, waterproof and soundproof. Choi lets his clients know the whole detail of the regal procedure, cost and construction. If you use pine and nut pine, you can save 1 million won ($1,000) per 3 square meters. Choi recently completed a log house that costed only 4 million won per 3 square meters. You can enjoy a fireplace, triangle roof, attic on the 3rd floor and fairly tale-like balcony and terrace done with Choi's artistic mastermind. Currently, Choi is working on a log house in Wondang-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon and he said that he will do his best as always to satisfy his client and eco-friendliness in the surrounding area.
