We can easily find a convenience store even in the corner of an alley nowadays. One of the reasons is that the many bayboomers who have retired from their work are getting into the business due to its simple management system, flexible size of the store and brand image. Currently, 90% of the Korean convenience store business is dominated by three big brands of major companies. But this made it hard for many store owners to make their own profits. To improve the condition, Seonujaebok established NC Retail in July 2014 after a thorough market research and business plan in 2013. He used to work in relation with franchise business in the financial sector. He said “It is relatively easy to run a convenience store but many store owners were not able to make their share. Also, they have to renewal the contract if it belongs to a major company in order not to lose the store. Relatively small companies, on the other hand, lacks in management knowhow despite the owners can have a better deal with the company.” Seonujaebok’s NC24 improved the drawbacks of both systems so that it can guarantee a steady profit for store owners.

NC24 values the most the store owner’s share of profits. The store owners have an autonomy for opening hours and choosing the products it sells and they can also decide the type and size of the store by themselves. CEO Seonujaebok said “NC24 provides various options for store owners such as ‘make a living type’, ‘self-owned type’, ‘investment type’ and ‘convertible type’.” ‘Make a living type’, for example, invests money by both the owner and NC24 to share the profits. When compared to major chains, NC24 provides a bigger share for the owner and the owner can also have the ownership of the store. ‘Self-owned type’ is that the owner pays all the investment and therefore all the profits goes to the owner except a monthly 300,000 won ($255) of membership fee. In the case of ‘investment type’, the owner invests only for the store but the business is managed by NC24. Both parties share profits by 50:50 and NC24 guarantees annual 12% interest even if the store does not make any profit. Lastly, ‘Convertible type’ is an ideal option for those who have run or is running a similar business. Regardless the type, NC24 supports startup fund up to 30 million won without interest.

Currently, NC24 is holding a monthly startup briefing and making an app for convenience store with innovative ideas. CEO Seonujaebok said “I’m planning to open 100 branches by the end of the year and I firmly believe that we will successfully grow together.” For this, NC24 started taking membership from mid September. NC24 is focusing on making the most of regional characters and is welcoming local residents in the hope of maximizing the profit. Currently, opening a Seoul branch office has been already scheduled and NC24 is taking candidates in 12 regions including Gyeonggi Province, Incheon and Busan. CEO Seonujaebok said “First of all, the location of store and floating population in the area are very important and secondly, store owners need to thoroughly analyse their store type and size as well as check on the contract.” Power Korea wishes Seonujaebok and NC24 a great success.
