Gumi True Love Church making much of each person
Shines a light on the world with true love and faith
Rev. Ryu of Gumi True Love Church

With many people pointing out the problems, Korean churches are gradually losing their vitality after once dazzling growth in the society. There is ever-growing dispute and conflict inside while the churches are faced with the matter of trust outside. In the sad reality where religion based on trust is criticized for being ‘trustless,’ some priests are still keeping to their duty of bearing their cross silently.

God’s love in redeeming people
Christian church is different from other religions in that it ‘doesn’t leave mundane life’ but ‘exists in the world.’ The church’s mission is to propagate God’s love, grace and redemption among people, but recently, Korean churches are losing their essence in the course of becoming bigger and a corporation. In these circumstances, Rev. Ryu Jin-wook of Gumi True Love Church is cultivating a church for life and peace in mutual prosperity with the local community while struggling for pure pastoral duties.

The church started with a dozen Christians who sought to build a healthy church in prayers. True Love Church, which had held a foundation service on the first week of June, 2013 at Hyunggok-dong, Gumi city, Gyeongbuk, opened a new chapter for mission when Rev. Ryu Jin-wook was sent here in December 2014.

After being invited as commissioned priest, Rev. Ryu has been working in charge of the church since. He said, “Jesus came to this world with the clear purpose of redeeming people. That is, ‘God so loved this world that whosoever believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’ I am endeavoring to deliver the right gospel so that our church people redeemed by God’s plan may get along with a clear purpose and vision.”

True Love Church starting with a dozen adults and three children has now become a church with over 100 Christians gathering in worship service. It is a worthy result after seeking to endear each person in his mission delivering true words of God, rather than for unconditional exterior growth. Rev. Ryu declared, “True Love Church is making a healthy community with the motto of becoming a church healthy, happy, joyous, caring about neighbors and building people, not just being oriented toward the number of church members or growth.”
Religion is redemption. The church’s role is to direct the right path for those wandering after losing their way, tuck up those suffering from hardship and despair with a warm affection, inform people of God’s love and plan, and embrace them in God’s arms. Rev. Ryu said, “Those who manage everything on their own are likely to shake easily often falling into frustration and confusion. That’s why we should accept Jesus Christ in the center of us with faith.” In this vein, True Love Church is also focusing on missionary work through true gospel so that more people may be able to find their right path and experience God’s love.

To become a community of love that serves neighbors
Rev. Ryu says that the direction for Korean churches should be found from ‘people.’ He thinks that the church should be the one for making much of each person rather than for a large-sized, successful ministry. Rev. Ryu said, “Today’s ministry excessively leans toward the church. At this time when modern man’s life becomes impoverished day by day and the society muzzy, the church should not be allowed to close the door to and turn its back on the world. We should approach people closely and have much more small churches that make much of all people.”

His such idea explains why he willingly resigned himself from a large church, Daegu Sawol Church, throwing away all comfort and honor and started to approach people. Though it is not an easy process to cultivate a church, his conviction and vision is that the more small churches rid of the existing frame come up, the more healthily Korean churches will build up.

Rev. Ryu declared, “We are going to make a church for religious life teeming with true joy and grace of worship, not for formality or show-off. This is the way all members of Gumi True Love church want to go along together, not just myself but everyone from young children to middle-aged people.” Actually, he attaches importance to communication above all because he thinks that the light of church becomes larger by calling everyone’s voice together. He dreams of a community-like church made and built up by everyone, not an authoritative church made by a single priest.

The gospel of love and grace executed by True Love Church is spreading out to the local community as a warm hand. Through diverse voluntary and contributory services, the church is delivering the heart of warmth to alienated neighbors around. A person’s power is small and weak like a drop of water but it can exert a big power like the sea if many gather together. All members of True Love Church are willing to become a drop of water themselves to send God’s love. They also wish that their gathered hands should become a wave to deliver warmth to dry and rough society. It is hoped that their idea of the church as a community of love to serve neighbors will present a new paradigm to Korean churches.
