진솔한 삶의 이야기로 전하는 ‘도전’의 메시지

우리는 살아가면서 여러 종류의 고난과 맞닥뜨린다. 누군가는 사업에 실패하기도 하고, 믿었던 이에게 배신당하기도 하며, 자신의 무능함을 탓하며 좌절하기도 한다. 그러나 우리가 ‘우리의 삶’을 온전히 살아가기 위해선 절대로 고난에 굴복해서도, 좌절해서도 안 된다고 강조하는 이가 있다. 자신이 겪어온 삶의 이야기를 풀어내며 많은 이들에게 내일을 살아갈 희망과 용기를 불어넣어주고 있는 동기부여 자기계발 강사, 정지만 대표를 만나보았다.

고난이란 인생의 값진 경험
현대사회를 살아가는 이들은 많은 것들을 포기하며 살아간다. 높아진 취업난과 어려워진 경제사정, 불합리한 사회구조를 탓하며 꿈이나 미래를 포기한 채, 이렇게 살아가는 것이 자신에게 주어진 운명이라 생각한다. 그러나 동기부여아카데미의 정지만 대표는 우리가 가지고 있는 가능성과 희망을 스스로 외면해서는 안 된다고 말한다. 그는 “고난과 역경은 삶의 방향을 알려주는 지표이며, 인생의 값진 경험입니다. 성공이란 특별한 누군가만 가능한 것이 아닌, 우리 모두가 가지고 있는 본질입니다”라고 말한다. 

또한 정 대표는 “세상에는 불가능한 일보다 안 해서 못하는 일이 더 많습니다. 그런데 도전해보지도 않고 지레 겁먹어서 포기하는 사람들이 너무 많은 것 같습니다”라며, “저는 그런 분들에게 도전을 위한 용기와 포기하지 않는 마음을 알려드리고 싶습니다”라고 전했다. 정지만 대표의 동기부여 강연은 사람들에게 도전에의 용기와 희망을 불어넣어 준다. 이는 그의 강연이 뻔하디 뻔한 멘트나 격언들로 점철된 것이 아닌, 청중의 공감대를 형성하고 감동을 줄 수 있는 실제 이야기로 구성되어 있기 때문이다. 그의 삶 자체가 커다란 절망과 도전, 극복을 담고 있기에, 우리에게 전하는 메시지의 울림은 더욱 크다.

Just you can do it!
지금으로부터 11년 전인 2004년 2월. 정지만 대표에게 갑작스레 찾아온 불행은 그의 삶을 송두리째 앗아갔다. 불의의 교통사고로 인한 2개월간의 혼수상태와 뇌손상에 의한 중증장애판정. 평생을 휠체어 위에서 살아가야하는 삶은 누구보다 열심히 살아온 그에게 가혹한 시련이었다. 

정 대표는 학창시절 싸움을 일삼던 소위 ‘문제 학생’이었다고 한다. 군대에 가기 전까지 철없던 시간을 보냈던 그는 전역 후 마음을 다잡고 최선을 다한 삶을 살아가겠다고 다짐한다. 호스트바, 나이트클럽 영업부장 등 해보지 않은 일이 없을 정도로 밤낮없이 열심히 살아온 그는 28살의 나이에 ‘내 집 장만’과 오토바이 가게 창업의 꿈을 이룬다. 그간의 고생이 보상받은 듯 했고, 이제 앞으로 나아가기만 하면 될 줄 알았던 그 때 바로 고난이 그를 찾아온 것이다.

정 대표는 “눈을 떠보니 병실이었고, 뇌성마비로 평생을 중증장애인으로 살아가야한다는 판정을 받았습니다. 하지만 전 절대로 인정할 수 없었습니다”라고 말했다. 칠흑 같은 어둠 속에 던져졌지만, 포기하지 않고 나아가다보면 분명 빛을 발견할 수 있으리라는 의지가 그의 안에 가득했다. 이후 정 대표는 3년간 매일 8시간 이상을 재활훈련에 매달린다. 부딪치고 쓸린 곳마다 피가 나고, 구토가 나올 정도로 힘들어도 그는 단 하루도 포기하지 않았다. 그리고 결국은 자리에서 일어나 두 다리로 걷는 ‘인간승리’의 주인공이 되었다.

기회를 잡을 수 있는 능력을 키워라
만약 장애판정에 좌절하고 주저앉았더라면, 힘든 재활훈련을 견디지 못하고 도중에 포기했더라면 지금의 자신은 없었을 거라고 말하는 정지만 대표. 어떤 힘들고 어려운 일도 끊임없이 도전하면 결국은 해낼 수 있다는 경험은 그를 강단으로 이끌었다. 정 대표는 “지금도 사고로 인한 후유증이 남아있습니다. 뼈가 부서지는 듯한 고통과 팔다리가 마비되는 아픔이 매일같이 저를 찾아옵니다. 시력도 조금씩 잃어가고 있고요. 하지만 다시 얻게 된 삶은 제게 너무나 큰 행복입니다. 볼 수 있고, 걸을 수 있고, 사람들과 눈을 마주치며 강연할 수 있다는 것. 많은 분들에게 희망과 도전의 가치를 전하는 일이 제게 가장 큰 보람입니다”라고 밝혔다.

기회란 기다린다는 것만으론 부족하다. 자신에게 기회가 왔을 때 확실히 붙잡을 수 있도록 스스로의 능력을 키우는 것. 그리고 그 기회를 만들어내기 위해 두려움을 떨쳐내고 도전하는 것. 정지만 대표가 전하는 진솔한 이야기들이 보다 많은 이들의 마음을 움직이고, 삶을 변화시킬 수 있게 되기를 바란다.

Life's valuable experience called 'hardships'
Many modern people tend to give up many things due to high unemployment rate, economic down turn and irrational social structure. They just take it as their fate. But CEO Jiman Jeong of Motivation Academy says that one must never give up one's hope and possibility. He said "Hardships and ordeals are the barometer that gives us a direction of our lives as well as a valuable experience. Success is not only the word for a few but everybody who believe in themselves. More often than not, people fail because they never try harder. They are just afraid of themselves before even give it a try. Therefore, I want to encourage them with challenging spirit and bravery and that is my job." 

Jeong's motivation lecture gives many people a hope and encouragement. Jeong does not use cliches for his speech but real cases that can arise empathy from the audience because his life itself has been full of challenge, despair and overcome. 

You can do it!
Jeong had a car accident in February 2004. He spent 2 months in a coma, suffered from severe disabilities and was diagnosed to live on a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Jeong used to be a trouble maker at school but he rather led a good and industrious life after being discharged from compulsory military service. He worked really hard regardless what kind of job it was from bars to night clubs and he bought his own house and opened a motorcycle store at the age of 28. But as good comes with bad, he had a car accident. Jeong said "When I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital ward and heard that I had to live on a wheelchair for the rest of my life. But I just cannot accept it." Jeong started to do rehabilitation training 8 hours a day for 3 years. Despite enormous pains and sickness, he never skipped the exercise even a day and finally made a miracle to walk on his feet again.

Raise your capability to see and grab a chance!
If Jeong just accepted his fate he would never have walked on his feet again. He firmly believed that if we keep challenging and never give up there is nothing we cannot achieve. Jeong's story was spread rapidly to people and he eventually took a stage to give his version of 'triumph for man'. Jeong said "In fact, I still suffer from aftermath of the accident which often brings me unbearable pains and numbness on arms and legs. I'm also losing my eyesight. But I can still see, walk and even stand on the stage to give my life story to people and I feel worth that I can encourage my audience with hope and challenging spirit." 

According to Jeong, an opportunity is not a thing to have when you just wait. You have to raise your capability to see and grab it. You should be ready to challenge for your dream by overcoming the fear inside you. Power Korea hopes that more and more people will be inspired from the story of Jeong and make their dream come true.
