Interpreting narrowness of modern society in spirit, energy and material
Art work 'Treeman' to represent modern society's abundance in material and weak spirit and body
Artist Toeul Park
Introducing new figurative art and philosophy of spirit, energy and material
Philosophers leave wise sayings and artists leave masterpieces. But there is an artist who seems to have both quality: artist Toeul Park. He pursues unprecedented figurative art while severly criticizes modern society's narrowness. His philosophy is about spirit, energy and material which he calls the three esthetic elements of living things. Park puts these three elements into his representative work 'Treeman' to express his concern on the modern society's overflowing materialism and weak spirit. The lean head and arms symbolize weak spirit and the bulky lower body symbolizes oversupply of materials. Treeman is a figurative language. It can also be seen as a combination of Korean tradition and the characteristics of French art which Park studied. Park sees nature as the whole of spirit, energy and material in optimism.
Park used to be a high school teacher up until his early 30s but he took a degree course in fine art at Dongguk University, studied a master's course at National Art School Rome and obtained Initiauz Dr. at University Paris Diderot - Paris 7. Park's works were recognized by Tours City's cultural department and he made a debut by using this recognition as a foothold. He held the first special invitation solo exhibition as the first Asian in the city, appeared on the Tours Newspaper and France M6 TV, held 7 solo invitation exhibitions in Paris including Paris' Culture Association.
Park also was appeared on KBS TV. He won the best prize at Musée National Fernand Léger Contest, silver prize at Marseille City Contest, Paris Le Salon, Salon d'Automne Contest, artist prize in the category of color from France National Federation Culture Association and constructionism artist prize at Biennale in Belgium before he came back to Korea. Park's works have been exhibited worldwide including many advanced countries and they showed positive interpretation of orientalism. Many French galleries tend to value cubism and impressionism but Park is an exclusive artist for them. He also won the Korea Sinzisikin Culture and Art Awards, Culture Management Awards and Creative Management Awards in a series in Korea.
Park's theory in art works and drawing technique also made him to be in the category of philosopher. But Park's success did not come easily. He twice fainted while he was working on creating his art works. Also, his works were copied by many in the French and Korean art worlds and he could not help but register copyright. However, this made Park think about materialism and loss of humanity and eventually introduce alternatives through his works. He emphasizes on the value of pure spirit to find a balance. Park wants to make a new world through spiritual revolution. This is the reason that he focuses on creating art works in this age of materialism.
