Awakening one's balance with tea
Spreading Korea's traditional tea culture
Chairman Gwonheum Park of Federation of Korean Tea Master Society (FKTMS)

Tea, the power of overcoming MERS
The recent outbreak of MERS in Korea raised fear about viral diseases. It rapidly and randomly spread to people and the government's lack of ability to control the disease added more anxiety to the public. However, this prompted people to find their own methods of prevention. Tea, among them, gained a great popularity.

Chairman Gwonheum Park of FKTMS said "Our weapon to fight against MERS was green tea. The reason of the Korean people being vulnerable to viral diseases was because tea culture was not as popular as in China and Japan."

Chosen as the top 10 health food by The Times, green tea contains many beneficial ingredients to our body. According to a research from Harvard Medical School, theanin and catechin in green tea reduces flu symptoms in the body by 30% when consumed for more than 3 months and a group of researchers at Daegu Hyosung University found that all the virus in the body gets destroyed within 6 hours of drinking green tea. Park said "A cancer research center in Saitama Prefecture in Japan carried out a research for 10 years and found out that green tea has an effect to suppress the propagation of cancer cells."

The westerners' interest in oriental tea culture is also increasing. Accordingly, Korea introduced an 'Act on the Promotion of Tea Industry' last December to spread the Korean tea culture to the world. This was a result of Chairman Park and the members of FKTMS. On 20 May this year, FKTMS held 'The 35th Tea Day Festival' at the front grass square in the National Assembly to celebrate the legislation. Park said "The Korean teas have their unique history and tradition different from China and Japan despite they were disappeared during the colonial era. But the law will recover the tradition and spread the Korean tea culture to the world."

Spreading tea culture to make a healthy society
Chairman Park worked as a newspaper reporter and a politician for a long time.  Park sets a premium on valuable works and he feels worth whenever his job is involved in contributing to the society and the nation. Park brought this value to FKTMS. Inaugurated as Chainman of FKTMS in 1992, Park has grown it to have more than 750 branch offices nationwide. He also founded Korea Tea Graduate School in 1993 and have fostered more than 2,000 tea specialized professors. Park also attended at a luncheon on Constitution Day and asked President Park to promote the Korean tea culture. Park said "We all have to work together to spread the Korean tea culture. Like the government gives a support by introducing the legislation, we need to exert our effort in building a cultural infrastructure." Park added that the Ministry of Health & Welfare needed to develop vaccines which contain the ingredients of green tea to tackle viral diseases such as MERS.

Government's active support is needed to spread tea culture
Park said "Traditionally, tea culture was our daily lives. Although we do not drink as mush tea as before, it is highly advisable that we should enjoy tea everyday. We do not need to make a new tea culture but we just need to recover the tradition which our ancestors once enjoyed."  Park also mentioned that the spread of tea culture would be a benefit for personality education because our tea culture contains all eight elements of personality education: decorum, filial piety, honesty, responsibility, respect, consideration, communication and cooperation. Condescending oneself and considering others can make a better society according to Park.

He said "Personality Education Promotion Act has been put in practice since July this year. FKTMS asked the Minister of Education to include tea education in the school curriculum because it is the most effective way of promoting personality education."

Tea can calm both our body and mind and makes us think things over. Power Korea hopes that Park and FKTMS will contribute to creating a better society with tea.
