Opening the door to the future energy fuels
SOFC is the future of our energy
Prof. Guntae Kim, School of Energy & Chemical Engineering at UNIST

Developing safe and high performance new materials
On July 10, Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy awarded Industrial Technology of the Month to Prof. Guntae Kim in UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) for developing SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell). SOFC generates electricity and water by reacting hydrogen or hydrocarbon fuels with oxygen in the atmosphere. It is regarded as the next generation energy conversion system. SOFC has the generating efficiency up to 70% and far higherthan MCFC (Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell) which has otherwise kept the top place.

Starting his career as a professor at UNIST in 2009, Prof. Kim led  'gunslab' to carry out researches based on electrochemistry and sold state chemistry and eventually conducted the development of SOFC.

"SOFC is structurally simple and high gererating efficiency, and besides its materials are cheap. It has solved problems of losing, recharging and corrosion of electrolyte and have received attention as the eco-friendly alternative energy technology in the future. But Ni cermet, the existing material, showed rapid degradation when  operated under hydrocarbon fuels due to the carbon cocking and sulfur poisoning."

Prof. Kim's group developed a new  layered perovskite materials to solve these drawbacks. The layered perovskite shows high performance and stability when applied to SOFC system as new anode material. The result was published on Nature Materials known to be the world's top authority in the materials science field.

"If SOFC is commercialized, it is possible to generate electricity using compact SOFC system in every household. It will reduce electricity bill in half and the annual power shortage in Korea especially in summer will also be solved."

Believe yourself and never give up
Prof. Kim's group studies about not only SOFC but metal-air battery, SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell), OMR (Oxygen Membrane Reactor) and DCFC (Direct Carbon Fuel Cells). Last year, they  developed a new cathode material that shows high efficiency and enhanced stability  at lower operating temperature (500 ~ 700¡É).  They reported the achievement to Angewandte Chemie Int. Ed. and the paper was chosen as the cover story. Prof. Kim’s group has published more than 60 SCI research papers. Prof. Kim attributes these remarkable results to UNIST's excellent research infrastructure in addition to his group's effort.

"Fuel cell has still less  attention than energy generating and  storage systems  such as secondary batteries or solar cells. But we believed that fuel cell is the essential future energy source and this belief has brought us fantastic results."

Prof. Kim also emphasizes on providing a creative research environment so that students can try their ideas and dream more freely and efficiently. "Students are our future. And the their future depends on how much quality education and practical research environment we provide in addition to their passion and diligence." Prof. Kim and his group's goal is to raise Korea's fuel cell technology as a global leader of SOFC industry and for this they are determined to keep on working with innovative ideas and challenging spirit.
