이론·실습·산학협동이 조화된 전문연구인력 배출의 요람
다양한 국책사업 수행, 국내 바이오테크놀로지 흐름을 이끌다

최근 정부는 국내 대학의 ‘세계 100대 대학’ 진입을 목표로 강도 높은 구조개혁을 진행하고 있다. 이는 그간의 대학교육이 학위 취득을 위한 교육, 연구를 위한 연구에 그쳐있다는 지적에 의한 것으로 보다 지역사회와 산업에 밀착되고, 학생 개개인의 역량을 향상시킬 수 있는 교육으로의 변화를 꿈꾸고 있는 것이다. 

국내 최고 수준의 울산대학교 생명과학부
울산과 경남지역을 대표하는 대학인 울산대학교는 1970년 개교 이래 ‘개척·도전정신’을 토대로 산업과 경제발전을 이끌 수많은 인재들을 배출해왔다. 특히 최근에는 영국 THE ‘아시아대학평가’ 국내 11위·아시아 85위, ‘설립 50년 미만 세계대학평가’ 세계 90위를 기록하며 대한민국을 대표하는 수준 높은 대학으로서의 지위를 확고히 하기도 했다. 

이 가운데 울산대학교 생명과학부는 1994년 대학교육협의회로부터 ‘우수학과’로서 평가받고, 1999년에는 사립대학 중에서는 최초로 한국연구재단의 SRC(우수연구센터)에 선정된 이래로 BK21, 중점연구소 사업, WCU, BRL, CK사업 등 다양한 정부 국책사업에 선정되며 그 위상을 더하고 있는 국내 생명과학 분야의 손꼽히는 학부이다. 특히 지난 2009년 면역학의 세계적 권위자인 정헌택 박사를 학부장으로 초빙한 이후 교육과학기술부의 바이오·의료기술개발사업 과제, 한국연구재단의 대학중점 연구소 지원사업 등을 수행하며 세계적인 수준의 연구와 교육이 이뤄지는 학부와 대학원으로 거듭나고 있다.

이외에 지난 2011년 캐나다 국적의 잭 캘러웨이 박사를 전임교수로 임용, 강의의 글로벌화를 추진하고 있으며, 한국생명공학연구원 유전체사업단 단장과 한국유전체학회 회장 등을 역임한 이대실 박사를 통해 학생들의 산학협력교육에도 매진하고 있다. 정헌택 교수는 “생명과학은 생명체에서 일어나는 여러 가지 현상들을 연구하고 이해하여 각종 질병의 원인 규명과 치료제 개발의 기초를 확립하는 중요한 학문입니다. 이에 저희 학부에서는 국내 바이오산업을 선도할 실용 인재를 양성하는 한편, 세계 바이오산업 분야를 선도할 수 있는 원천기술 연구 역량 향상에도 심혈을 기울이고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

다양한 전공분야 탐색으로 미래 생명과학도의 꿈을 키우다
울산대 생명과학부가 이처럼 놀라운 성장을 거듭하고 있는 데에는 세계적인 수준의 교육을 수행하기 위해 끊임없이 연구하는 14명의 전임교수와 1명의 외국인 교수, 울산대 의과대학의 24명 겸직교수 등 총 39명 교수진의 노력이 있었다. 특히 국내 최초의 공모제 초빙 학부장인 정헌택 교수는 메타염증연구센터를 설립, 국내 바이오·의료기술계에 새로운 패러다임을 제시하며 크게 주목받고 있다. 최근 특허출원 등의 가시적인 성과를 나타내고 있는 ‘바이오활성가스를 이용한 대사질환 제어 원천기술 개발’은 현재 1단계 사업을 마친 상태이며, 2단계 사업에서는 개발된 신물질을 활용 대사질환 제어에 적용할 계획이다. 또한 ‘고령질환 제어 메타염증 연구’의 경우 메타염증 발병기전 규명 및 표적 발굴과 해당 분야 전문 연구인력 양성이라는 2가지 목표를 중심으로 사업을 수행 중에 있으며, 향후 연구를 통해 대사질환과 관련 고령질환을 치료 및 예방할 수 있는 신약을 개발할 수 있을 것으로 전망되고 있다.

이처럼 생명과학부에서 높은 수준의 연구 활동이 이뤄지는 것은 학생들에게 교과과정에 국한되지 않은 다양한 연구실험에 참여할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 때문이다. 대학 특성화사업과 특성화 우수학과 사업을 수행하는 생명과학부의 학생들은 의생명·에코환경·바이오화학 등 3개 전공 트랙별로 교수연구실에 배치돼 실험에 직접 참여할 수 있으며, 방학 시즌에는 자신이 원하는 연구 분야를 좀 더 자세히 접할 수 있도록 ‘인턴십 프로그램’도 운영되고 있다. 정헌택 교수는 “학부생들의 경우 자신이 원하는 전공분야의 실험을 직접 체험할 기회가 그리 많지 않습니다. 때문에 자신의 진로와 적성을 찾지 못해 방황하기도 하고, 막상 뛰어든 분야가 자신과 잘 맞지 않아 어려움을 겪기도 합니다”라고 설명했다. 때문에 학부에서 운영하고 있는 이러한 프로그램들은 학생들이 확실한 진로를 선택하고, 차근차근 단계를 밟아나갈 수 있는 훌륭한 가이드라인이 되고 있다. 

이론과 실습, 산학협력의 삼박자 갖춰
학부는 ‘동남권 최고 수준의 생명과학부’, ‘바이오산업 산학협력 교육 전국 1위’를 목표로 4가지 전략을 수립했다. 먼저 실용적 전공교육 강화와 창의적 융합교육 확대를 통해 창의적 실용인재를 양성하고, 울산 지역 전략산업과의 연계와 협력에 바탕을 둔 지역밀착 교육을 수행한다. 또한 보다 나은 이론교육과 실습을 위한 교육 인프라를 첨단화하는 동시에 외국어교육 강화, 해외대학 교류 활성화를 통한 교육의 세계화를 추진하고 있다.

미래의 생명과학도 양성과 함께 연구에도 매진하고 있는 정헌택 교수의 첫번째 목표는 현재 진행하는 연구를 통해 CO(일산화탄소)를 이용한 대사질환군 예방·치료의 학문적 근거를 규명하고, 이를 바탕으로 대사질환들의 원인적 단초인 비만 해결의 성과를 창출하는 것이다. 그는 “과거 CO는 중독사고 등을 일으키며 안 좋은 이미지로 각인되어 왔습니다. 그러나 NO(일산화질소)가 가진 혈관 확장의 효과가 인정되어 노벨상 수상에 이른 것처럼, CO 또한 중요한 생물학적 효과를 통해 인류에게 도움이 되는 물질로 탈바꿈 할 수 있으리라 생각합니다”라고 전했다.

문과에서 인문학이 중요하듯 이과에서 자연과학이 차지하는 위치는 ‘필수요소’ 그 자체라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 내용이 방대하고 깊어, 학부 4년으로는 윤곽조차 파악하기 어려운 것이 사실이다. 정헌택 교수는 보다 많은 자연과학도들이 대학원을 통해 연구와 응용을 이어갔으면 한다는 바람을 전했다. 국가와 지역사회의 발전과 세계 바이오산업을 이끌 창의적 실용 인재 양성에 매진하고 있는 울산대학교 생명과학부의 미래와 꿈을 응원한다.

One of the top life science leaders in Korea
Opened in 1970, Ulsan University is a representative university in Ulsan and South Gyeongnam Province. It is ranked at the 11th among Korean universities and 85th in Asia according to THE(Times Higher Education: UK) and 90th at Top Universities Under 50 Years Old (US). 

Ulsan university's Department of Life Science was chosen as 'excellent department' by the Korea Council for University Education in 1994 and chosen as SRC of National Research Foundation of Korea as the first private university in Korea in 1999. The department carried out various national projects including BK21, Core Research Project, WCU, BRL and CK. Dr. Huntaek Jeong, one of the top authorities in immunology in the world, became the head of the department in 2009 and led the task of 'development of biomedical technology' from the Ministry of Education and Science Technology and 'university research institute support project' from National Research Foundation of Korea. 

The department also invited a canadian Dr. Jack Callaway as a full-time professor in 2011. Dr. Daesil Lee - served as head of Genome Department of Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and chairman of Korean Genome Organization - is providing courses for industry-academic cooperation in the department. Prof. Jeong said "Life science is a subject that studies on various phenomena occurring in living organism and finds the causes of diseases and methods of cure. We foster talented students and promotes R&D in original technology in order to lead the field."

Various research projects
Thanks to the effort of 14 full time professors, a foreign professor and 24 adjunct professor from Medical School, Department of Life Science at Ulsan University has drawn remarkable achievements. Prof. Jeong established Meta Inflammation Research Institute and suggested a new paradigm to the domestic biomedical industry. 'Metabolic disease control original technology development by using bio active gas' obtained a patent and finished its first state of the project and the developed matter from the fist stage will be applied to metabolic disease control in the second stage. 'Geriatric disease control meta inflammation research' is carried out with two goals of finding the causes of meta inflammation and fostering specialists. The research is expected to find a cure in the near future. 

The department provides students with a variety of research projects in order to raise the level of research skills. Students are appointed to each professor in biomedical science, eco-environment and biochemistry to carry out a research with the professor and internship program is also run during summer vacation. Jeong said "Students often have difficulty in finding their aptitude but we provide them the research they are interested or want to participate so that we can help them decide their career path before they graduate."

Combination of knowledge, practice and industry-academic cooperation
The department set 4 strategies with the goal to be No.1 life science department in the southeast region and No.1 bio industry-academic cooperation in Korea. To achieve the goal, the department is fostering talented students, enhancing industry-academic education, building excellent training infrastructure and strengthening international exchanges through language skills. 

Jeong's goal is to find ways to prevent and cure metabolic diseases by using carbon monoxide and to give solutions to diabetes. He said "Carbon monoxide has a bad reputation for poisoning. But like nitrogen monoxide's blood vessel expansion effect received the Nobel Prize, carbon monoxide will also contribute to the benefit of humanity when found its effect." It is difficult to learn all the knowledge about life science in four years. For this reason, Prof. Jeong hopes that more students will carry on their study and research in graduate school. Power Korea believes that Jeong and the department will contribute to the development of life science in Korea.
