One of the top life science leaders in Korea
Opened in 1970, Ulsan University is a representative university in Ulsan and South Gyeongnam Province. It is ranked at the 11th among Korean universities and 85th in Asia according to THE(Times Higher Education: UK) and 90th at Top Universities Under 50 Years Old (US). 

Ulsan university's Department of Life Science was chosen as 'excellent department' by the Korea Council for University Education in 1994 and chosen as SRC of National Research Foundation of Korea as the first private university in Korea in 1999. The department carried out various national projects including BK21, Core Research Project, WCU, BRL and CK. Dr. Huntaek Jeong, one of the top authorities in immunology in the world, became the head of the department in 2009 and led the task of 'development of biomedical technology' from the Ministry of Education and Science Technology and 'university research institute support project' from National Research Foundation of Korea. 

The department also invited a canadian Dr. Jack Callaway as a full-time professor in 2011. Dr. Daesil Lee - served as head of Genome Department of Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and chairman of Korean Genome Organization - is providing courses for industry-academic cooperation in the department. Prof. Jeong said "Life science is a subject that studies on various phenomena occurring in living organism and finds the causes of diseases and methods of cure. We foster talented students and promotes R&D in original technology in order to lead the field."

Various research projects
Thanks to the effort of 14 full time professors, a foreign professor and 24 adjunct professor from Medical School, Department of Life Science at Ulsan University has drawn remarkable achievements. Prof. Jeong established Meta Inflammation Research Institute and suggested a new paradigm to the domestic biomedical industry. 'Metabolic disease control original technology development by using bio active gas' obtained a patent and finished its first state of the project and the developed matter from the fist stage will be applied to metabolic disease control in the second stage. 'Geriatric disease control meta inflammation research' is carried out with two goals of finding the causes of meta inflammation and fostering specialists. The research is expected to find a cure in the near future. 

The department provides students with a variety of research projects in order to raise the level of research skills. Students are appointed to each professor in biomedical science, eco-environment and biochemistry to carry out a research with the professor and internship program is also run during summer vacation. Jeong said "Students often have difficulty in finding their aptitude but we provide them the research they are interested or want to participate so that we can help them decide their career path before they graduate."

Combination of knowledge, practice and industry-academic cooperation
The department set 4 strategies with the goal to be No.1 life science department in the southeast region and No.1 bio industry-academic cooperation in Korea. To achieve the goal, the department is fostering talented students, enhancing industry-academic education, building excellent training infrastructure and strengthening international exchanges through language skills. 

Jeong's goal is to find ways to prevent and cure metabolic diseases by using carbon monoxide and to give solutions to diabetes. He said "Carbon monoxide has a bad reputation for poisoning. But like nitrogen monoxide's blood vessel expansion effect received the Nobel Prize, carbon monoxide will also contribute to the benefit of humanity when found its effect." It is difficult to learn all the knowledge about life science in four years. For this reason, Prof. Jeong hopes that more students will carry on their study and research in graduate school. Power Korea believes that Jeong and the department will contribute to the development of life science in Korea.
