아름다운 고향에 대한 기억 ‘바람 불던 날’ 연작으로 풀어내
일회성 사회에서 자신의 길 찾는 것이 중요해

사람은 누구나 자신의 길을 찾기 위해 노력하고, 최종 목적지에 도달하고자 끊임없이 발걸음을 재촉하며 앞으로 나아간다. 그 길에서 예상치 못한 바람을 만나게 되면 힘없이 흔들리더라도, 또 그것을 받아내고 부딪히며 정점을 향해 날아가고픈 갈망을 가슴에 품고서 말이다. 정해진 틀에 갇혀 하루하루 반복되는 도시생활. 아파트, 빌딩, 버스, 전철... 네모난 세상 속에서 시계처럼 움직이고 숨 쉬며 살아가는 우리들의 삶. 나 역시 지금 이 순간에도 무거운 고요함이 짓누르고 있는 작업실 박스 안에서 정점을 향한 작업의 손길을 재촉하고 있다. 작은 바람에도 쉽게 흔들리는 우리들 마음속에 찾아든 태풍전야의 고요함이라고 할까. 아름다운 자연과 고향에 대한 기억 작품에 풀어내
‘바람 불던 날’ 연작으로 현대인의 욕망 어루만져
부산시 남구 용당동에서 태어난 민태연 작가는 가장 가까운 학교까지 3km를 걸어가야 하는 시골 한복판에서 어린 시절을 보냈다. 눈 뜨면 신선대 바다 부두와 방파제 이순신 장군 동상, 아름다운 산과 나무들이 있는 자연 속에서 함께 살아가며 어린 시절을 보낸 민 작가는 자신의 고향이 컨테이너 산업단지로 매립된 후 자신의 기억 속에 남아 있는 고향의 모습을 작품으로 표현하기 시작했다.

이제 40대 중반의 나이에도 불구하고 16세부터 시작한 작품 활동이 어느덧 30년 가까이 지난 중견 작가인 그는 어린 시절 풍부한 자연 환경을 보고 자란 느낌과 함께 가족 전체가 예술가 집안인 영향을 받아 어린 시절부터 그 재주가 남달랐다. 그의 누나는 화가로 활동하고 있으며 형 역시 사진작가로 명성이 높다.

민 작가 역시 중학교 때부터 본격적으로 그림을 그리기 시작해 부산예술고등학교(現 디자인고등학교)에 진학해 작품 활동을 시작했다. 20살 때는 석공 기능경기대회에 출전하기까지 했던 민 작가는 꾸준히 작품 활동을 지속해오다 동국대학교 인문과학대학 미술학부 조소전공을 졸업하고 27세부터 전업 작가로의 길을 걷기 시작했다.

민 작가의 작품 세계는 나무와 바람 등 자연에서 얻은 느낌으로 대표된다. ‘꼬마부들’,  ‘아낌없이 주는 나무’, ‘가족’과 ‘연인’ 등 다양한 소재와 주제를 갖고 있는 그가 가장 최근에 내놓은 작품은 ‘바람 불던 날’ 연작이다. 민 작가는 “바람이라는 것은 추억의 바람과 현실의 바람을 모두 표현한다. 어릴 때부터 환희와 기쁨, 성인이 되고 아픔에 대한 바람 등을 파노라마처럼 표현하는 것이다”라고 이야기했다. 도시 생활하는 사람들의 바람은 탈바꿈하고 싶은 욕망과 벗어나고 싶은 욕망 등 다양하다. 대리석으로 만든 12개의 연작 ‘바람 불던 날’은 탈바꿈 속에서 휴식과 안락을 찾고자 하는 현대인들의 마음을 표현해내 각종 전시에서 좋은 반응을 얻었다.

4회 개인전 거치며 완성한 작품세계 각계에서 주목

민 작가는 1회 대구 동아갤러리, 2회 대구 소나무갤러리(봉산미술제), 3회 서울 토포하우스갤러리, 4회 김해 선갤러리 등 다수의 개인전을 비롯해 서울오픈아트페어, 대구아트페어, 포스코 갤러리(Emotion)전 기획초대전, 경주 세계문화엑스포 야외 초대전, 보령 문화예술회관 초대전 등 다수의 기획․단체전 등에 참여한 바 있다. 또한 한마음 미술대전 대상, 울산시미술대전 특별상, 전국 공모 미술대전 우수상 3회 특선 9회의 수상경력을 가진 작가로서 자신만의 독자적인 세계를 구축하고 있는 작가라 할 수 있다.

조형 예술의 축은 내용보다 형식을 중요시하지만 민 작가가 이어가는 작업의 핵심은 전기나 힘을 가해서 움직이는 형식적인 면을 배제하고 바람이 불면 움직이는 방법에 기초한다. 그를 통해 감동과 감정을 표출하는 개성이 생기고 시각적 언어로서의 걸작이 되며 대중과 소통하게 되는 것이다.

대구에서 첫 번째 개인전을 열 때가 가장 보람 있었다고 전하는 민 작가는 “사람들이 내 작품을 보고 갔을 때 행복해 하고 옛 추억에 잠길 수 있다는 자체에서 희망을 가졌다”고 이야기한다. 작품 활동을 하는 작가들을 비롯해 많은 것들이 일회성으로 흘러가는 현대 사회 속에서 자신의 길을 찾기 위해 끝까지 가는 것이 중요하다고 생각하는 그는 돌 조각을 계속하며 무엇보다 기본에 충실하고자 한다.

“평면에서 충실한 것과 조소에서 충실한 것이 다르겠지만 점, 선, 면으로 시작해서 입방체로 연결되어 실용성, 안전성, 비공간성, 실공간성에 충실해야 한다. 현재 나오고 있는 많은 작품들은 조소의 기본적인 면이 사라지고 있다. 공모전 심사를 가도 크기로 승부수를 걸고 작가의 정체성을 갖고 작업하는 면이 사라진다”

안산국제아트페어 운영위원 등 다양한 활동 이어가
작업실 민 Art Factory에서 자유로운 창작 응원하고 싶어
바로 이러한 면 때문에 민 작가는 현재 한국미술협회, 경북조각가협회 회원, 한마음미술대전, 불빗미술대전 신라미술대전 초대작가 활동을 하는 동시에 안산국제아트페어 운영위원이자 부산국제아트페어 경북지부장으로 활동하며 자신의 길을 모색할 뿐 아니라 후배들을 위한 환경 조성에도 열을 다하고 있다.

민 작가는 “갈 수 있는 길이라면 우직하게 가고 싶다. 석조각은 원석 덩어리를 갖고 안에 갇혀있는 것을 뽑아내는 것인데, 소품은 1주일 정도가 걸리고 중작은 한두 달 이상을 소요해야 하는 긴 작업인 만큼 이 길을 가는 사람이 많이 없어졌다. 노력에 대한 대가는 온다고 보고, 할 수 있는 만큼은 내 길을 가겠다”고 앞으로의 포부를 이야기했다.

또한 “장인의 길을 가고자 하는 학생들을 위한 특성화 학교인 디자인고등학교에 작업하는 공간이 점차 사라지고 있다. 교육과정도 많은 부분 대학 진학을 위한 것으로 개편되며 컴퓨터와 전산이 양성되고 있다. 손으로 할 수 있는 장인의 길이 없어지는 것이 안타깝다”고 말을 이었다.

30년 가까운 활동을 이어가며 작가들이 처한 현실을 누구보다 잘 알고 있는 민 작가는 최대한 작가들에게 도움이 되는 환경, 작업하는 사람들을 위한 작업실을 만들고자 한다. 민 Art Factory(MAF)라는 이름의 작업실에는 노래방 기기, 안마기, 샤워실 등 휴식을 취할 수 있는 공간과 함께 편안하게 작업을 이어갈 수 있는 공간도 여유롭게 준비되어 있다.

1%의 선택된 일부 외에는 항상 매일 끼니를 걱정하며 살아야 하는 작가들에게 자신의 작업을 완성할 수 있는 공간이 주어진다는 것은 천금과도 같은 기회일 것이다. 더군다나 현대 서양미술의 대부분은 평면 미술로 조소는 상대적으로 등한시되어 온 것이 사실이다. 오랜 기간 공을 들여 작품을 완성했다 하더라도 전시를 하는 것 역시 만만치 않은 일이다. 소품은 일반 갤러리를 빌린다고 하더라도 몇 m가 넘어가는 대형 작품의 경우는 작품의 전시를 소화할 수 있는 공간 자체가 희박하다. 스스로 오랜 기간 자연을 품고 작품 세계를 완성해온 민 작가는 앞으로도 꾸준한 작품 활동과 함께 대한민국의 석조 예술의 정착을 위해 꾸준한 노력을 다해갈 것이다. 그의 노력이 꽃피게 될 그 날이 오기를 진심으로 기원한다.

'The Day With Wind' unfolds memories of hometown
"Finding oneself is important in this disposable society"

Beautiful nature and memories of hometown expressed in art works
A series 'The Day With Wind' tenderly strokes the desires of modern people 
Born in Yongdang-dong, Nam District, Busan City, Sculptor Min grew up in a fishing village where he had to walk 3km to go to the nearest school. Naturally, Min spent his childhood by watching the quay nearby, breakwater and statue of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin all surrounded by beautiful mountains. However, and sadly, his hometown was buried for a container industrial complex. To look on the bright side, it actually stimulated Min to start to express his memories of hometown in sculptures at the age of 16. Now in his mid-forties, Min has worked as a sculptor for about 30 years. But his artistic talent not only came from the beautiful scenery of his hometown but also from his artistic family as his older sister also is a painter and his older brother a famous photographer. 

Min studied at Busan Art High School (now 'Korea Art and Design High School'), participated in Stonemasons' Skill Olympics when he was 20, majored in Sculpture at Dongguk University and started his career as a professional sculptor at the age of 27. 

Min uses nature such as trees and wind as the main subject of his works. His main works include 'Bulrush', 'The Giving Tree', 'Family', 'Lovers' and the recent series 'The Day With Wind'. Min said "Wind expresses itself of its memory and reality. So I made the wind with my joy and desire to grow up and pain in the form of a panorama." According to Min, the wind for city dwellers can mean a desire for change and escape. So he created the series 'The Day With Wind' by using marble in 12 series and it attracted a great attention in various exhibitions by tenderly stroking the desires of modern people.

Min has held four solo exhibitions at Daegu Dongah Gallery, Daegu Pine Tree Gallery(Bongsan Art Festival), Seoul Photohouse Gallery and Gimhae Sun Gallery in order. Min also participated invitation exhibitions such as Seoul Open Art Fair, Daegu Art Fair, Posco Gallery(Emotion Exhibition) and various group exhibitions including Gyeongju World Culture Expo (outdoor displays) and Boryeong Culture & Art Center. In addition, Min won the Grand Prize at One Mind Art Exhibition, the Special Prize at Ulsan City Art Festival, a runner-up prize for three times and excellent selection for nine times at Korea Art Contest.

The plastic arts usually values formalism more than contents but Min gives more focus on flexibility that can response to the wind. Through this, Min expresses his emotions and personality and communicates with appreciators. 
Min remembers his first solo exhibition in Deagu as the most rewarding experience by saying "I found a hope as the visitors found happiness and conjured up their old memories by communicating with my works." 

Min thinks that finding oneself is important in this disposable society and his works are also closely related to this idea. Min said "There is difference between creating works on a flat surface and in three dimension but one must give consistency in dots, lines and surfaces to create practicality, safety and a sense of non-space. It is regretful that many sculptures in the current market seem to lose the basics of sculpture and some sculptors play with the size of the work rather than one's own identity for a competition."

Active as a steering committee of International Gyeonggi Ansan Art Fair(IGAAF)
Min Art Factory supports artists
Min currently is taking on various roles such as a steering committee of IGAAF, Leader of Gyeongbuk branch of Busan International Art Fair, a member of Gyeongbuk Sculptor's Association and an invitation sculptor of One Mind Art Exhibition and Light Art Exhibition and Silla Art Exhibition. Min also is passionate in fostering junior artists. 

Min said "I think consistency is very important in my work. The techniques of sculpture in stone is to take out the things inside of the gemstone. Small ones usually take about a week and bigger ones take about one or two months. Because of this length, many people do not want to walk this hard way. But I want to walk my way with consistency." He added "It is regretful that work space in design-related high schools are disappearing. The curriculums are also changing in pursuit of entering a university. I doubt whether artisans might also disappear in the near future." 

For this reason, Min wants to create an environment and work space for fellow artists. Min Art Factory (MAF), for example, is equipped with Karaoke, massager and shower booth as well as work and resting place. Many artists are in fact  experiencing severe hardships to earn a living and to find a place where they can exhibit their works. In addition, sculpture is rather neglected by the two dimensional art that is dominating the contemporary art. In this respect, a place like MAF is certainly a good news for them. And Min is determined to do his best to share and grow together with fellow sculptors.
