[Cover Story] Artist Eunsook Kim
The 'Story of Bangudae' that tells about past, present and future
Kim to participate in Singapore Art Fair as one of Korean artists
Kim has an inspiration from Bangudae Petroglyphs

Artist Kim was born in a remote fishing village around Yeongil Bay in Pohang City. The beautiful scenery of her hometown is still remained as precious memories in her heart. Goldenrain trees behind her home in May and June, yellow flowers between the trees in July and the golden beach she played around in summer have always been the source of her art works.

Kim shifted her precious memories onto canvas that did not know about the pains of life. But one day, and by a chance, she came to know about Bangudae Petroglyphs (National Treasure No.285), the rocks that are dented with images of whales, fish, dogs, wolves, tigers, deers, boars, rabbits, foxes, turtles and mankind in the dynamic movements of man fishing and hunting. The rocks and images instantly captivated Kim and made her fall in a deep thought how to express the lines and symmetries of the images into her own creations.

Creating a series of works called 'The Story of Bangudae'
A limitless world where whales and jellyfish freely swim through

Thus born was a series of works which Kim named 'The Story of Bangudae'. Kim combined her childhood memories with the trace of ancestor's magical touch on the rocks. When we were a child, we naturally knew how to build our own world with a fistful of sand and stones and could communicate with other living things without any prejudice. The awesomeness and homing instinct Kim observed on the rocks led her to conjure up the purity of the beginnings and coexistence of the world on her canvas. Whales, jellyfish, lugworms, cranes, masks and tigers are playing together in The Story of Bangudae and they go back home in the glow of the setting sun after building their own world. Kim spreads her wings of limitless imaginations in the dreamy sceneries in her work where the edges of land and the sea meets and say goodbye in the circle of life.

Kim's remarkable talent demonstrated in her fist solo exhibition
9 solo exhibitions and 150 group exhibitions to give her name prolific artist

Kim majored in Western Painting at Uiduk University and obtained a master's degree in Fine Art at Hongik University. Her graduation thesis also was closely related to Bangudae Petroglyphs as she titled it 'Study On Reminiscent Images Expressed On Petroglyphs'. She was in her forties when she attended the master's course but her passion and art works proved her to claim a scholarship and a praise from professors.

Kim also surprised people around her by holding her first solo exhibition in 6 months of her graduation. Having a solo exhibition in 3 years after graduation means that (s)he has become a successful artist according to alumni. It is not easy for students to settle one's own style before they graduate but Kim's passion and her childhood memories made her possible to achieve it.

Starting with her first solo exhibition at Pohang Culture & Arts Center in 2006, Kim has held numerous solo exhibitions including The Choson Ilbo Gallery in 2007, invitation exhibition at Uiduk Gallery in 2007, Ansan Arts Center in 2009, Seoul Namsan Museum of Art in 2010, Hongik Museum of Art in 2011, Daegu Metro Gallery in 2011, invitation exhibition at Cheonan Midam Gallery in 2013 and Seongnam Arts Center in 2014. Kim also has participated in 150 group exhibitions including Pohang Art Competition in 2005, Gyeongbuk Art Competition in 2003 (selected), Silla Art Competition in 2004, Korea Academy Art Competition in 2005 (special selection), Environmental Art Competition in 2005 (special selection), Korea Art Competition in 2006 (selected), New Formative Art Competition in 2008 (special selection) and in 2009 (special prize). Meanwhile, Kim is active as a member of Korea Fine Arts Association, Seoul Fine Arts Association and Pohang Representational Art Association. Recently, she has had an honor to be chosen as one of participant Korean artists in Singapore Art Fair which will be held in November this year.

Kim to participate in Singapore Are Fair as one of Korean artists
"My works are my competitiveness"

Kim has led her full time artist career for 10 years and has never regretted a moment about her path. Kim's philosophy is 'My works are my competitiveness.' Art works, at the end of the day, are the avatar of one's inner feelings and expressions and one must have a clear imagination and confidence in one's own art world. Continuous effort in finding new materials and styles are also very important. Kim said "An artist is responsible for finding one's own subject and material. There are limitless materials in our world and choosing right materials can greatly affect the world the artist wants to create."

Many artists tend to reproduce the happiest moments of their lives onto canvas. The smooth yet strong elements in Kim's works seem different from regression or narcissism; it is about her volition. Art critic Hyeosil Yang said "Kim is an artist with passion and confidence. She does not wallow in self-pity but gives consistent positivity and activeness on canvas which came from her childhood memories."
