‘나’를 찾아가는 청소년의 행복한 변화
놀며 배우는 PLC 교육으로 잠재된 역량을 깨우다

대한민국은 현재 역사상 유래 없는 취업난에 시달리고 있다. 가장 큰 문제는 취업난에 시달리고 있는 청년들 대부분이 자신의 직업에 대한 뚜렷한 목표나 꿈 없이 맹목적인 취업에만 매달리고 있다는 점이다. ‘꿈’을 상실한 젊은 세대의 문제는 곧 대한민국의 성장잠재력을 크게 저해하는 요소로 지적되고 있다. 청소년기의 진로·적성 탐색이 무엇보다 중요하게 떠오르고 있는 이유다.

놀며 배우며 소통하는 PLC 교육
지난 2004년부터 약 11년간 청소년 교육 분야에 투신해 온 한국진로코칭연구소의 최형묵 소장은 놀이를 통한 자이실현과 바른 인성에 바탕을 둔 셀프리더십 교육, 청소년을 위한 프로그램의 개발 및 보급에 힘써왔다. 한국여가레크리에이션협회 전문위원, 꿈희망미래 리더십 센터 책임강사, 한국청소년행복연구소 팀장을 역임하며 청소년 교육 전문가로서 기반을 착실히 다진 최형묵 소장은 한국진로코칭연구소를 통해 청소년 교육의 올바른 방향을 제시하고, 청소년들이 자신의 꿈과 비전을 찾을 수 있도록 돕는 데에 주력하고 있다.

‘놀며 배우고 소통해라’를 핵심 가치로 삼고 있는 한국진로코칭연구소에서 개발한 ‘PLC(Play Learning Communication) 교수법’은 즐겁게 활동하며 오감으로 느끼고, 스스로 문제해결 능력을 깨달을 수 있어 높은 몰입도와 참여율, 만족도를 보이고 있다. 최 소장은 “놀이는 청소년들에게 다가갈 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법입니다. 저 또한 어린 시절의 놀이를 통해 친구들과의 협업과 소통, 매너 등을 자연스럽게 배울 수 있었습니다”라고 설명했다. 

최형묵 소장은 PLC 교수법을 바탕으로 지속적인 동기부여를 통해 스스로 성장할 수 있도록 도와주는 ‘비전캠프’, 주도적인 삶을 통한 자신감 회복을 목표로 하는 ‘셀프리더십’, 현실적인 직업세계 인식과 취업핵심역량 강화에 포커스를 맞춘 ‘취업캠프’, 올바른 인성을 갖춘 바른 리더로 성장시키는 ‘인성리더십’ 등의 프로그램을 진행하고 있다. 또한 최근에는 홈페이지 리뉴얼과 ‘실시간 멘토링’을 통해 자신의 꿈과 미래에 대한 고민으로 가득한 청소년들에게 소통과 문제해결의 창구로서의 역할을 다하고 있다. 최근 3년간 126개 학교를 방문해 3,400명이 넘는 학생들을 만나며 그들의 꿈과 열정을 발견하는데 힘써온 최 소장은 “진로에 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 ‘어떤 사람이 될 것인가’에 대한 가치관을 확립하는 일입니다. 어디에 기준을 두고 살아갈 지에 대한 방향을 제시하거나, 혹은 본인 스스로 찾을 수 있는 계기를 만들어주는 나침반이 되어주고자 합니다”라며 포부를 밝혔다.

포기하지 말고 원하는 길을 가라
청소년은 무한한 가능성을 가지고 있다. 자신의 재능과 역량을 어떻게 펼쳐나가느냐에 따라 성장의 폭이 크게 달라진다. 최형묵 소장은 청소년 교육에서 중요한 것은 ‘자신이 원하는 일’을 하는 것이라 강조한다. 최 소장은 “아이들은 자신이 하고 싶은 일을 할 때에 능력의 200%를 발휘합니다. 어른의 생각으로 잣대를 들이대는 것은 아이들에게 제약이 될 뿐입니다”라고 말하며, “저 또한 ‘내가 하고 싶은 일을 하자’는 생각으로 수많은 직업에 도전해왔습니다. 제가 지금의 직업을 찾게 된 것도 그런 과정을 겪어왔기 때문이라고 생각합니다”라고 설명했다. 다만, 최 소장은 “무엇을 하든 포기하지 않는 것이 중요하다”는 말도 덧붙였다. ‘만 시간의 법칙’에서 그랬듯 한 분야에서 꾸준히 노력하면 누구나가 알아주는 전문가가 될 수 있다는 것이 그의 생각이다. 스스로 만족할 때까지 노력해보는 것이야 말로 또 하나의 도전이며, 미래를 위한 자양분이 될 것이라고 그는 말한다.

최형묵 소장은 “현실적인 눈을 갖게 된 어른들이 아이들에게 자신의 어릴 적 꿈을 이야기해주는 건 쉽지 않은 일입니다. 때문에 아이들은 자신이 하고 싶은 일, 갖고 싶은 직업에 대한 정보를 찾기가 어렵죠. 제가 하고자 하는 일은 그런 아이들에게 미래에 대한 돌파구와 꿈을 찾아갈 수 있는 기회, 비전을 열어주는 것입니다”라고 밝혔다. 그는 이를 위해 학생들을 위한 더 좋은 프로그램과 체계화된 놀이교육, 이론과 논리에 근거한 데이터 확보에 주력하고 있다. 또한 이를 바탕으로 동영상, 교구 등을 개발해 같은 청소년 교육에 매진하고 있는 이들에게 보급하고 싶다는 것이 그의 목표다. 오랜 시간 함께해 온 팀원들과 함께하고 있는 연구소를 청소년들을 위한 사회적 기업으로 키움과 동시에 자신의 사랑스런 두 딸을 위해서도 부끄럽지 않은 아버지이자 교육자가 되고 싶다는 최형묵 소장. 청소년들의 꿈을 향한 도전과 열정을 지원하는 그와 한국진로코칭연구소의 노력이 미래 대한민국의 발전을 위한 든든한 지지대가 되어주기를 기대한다.

PLC Education, learning by playing and communication
Choi has devoted his life to youth education for the last 11 years since 2004 and exerted his effort in developing and spreading self-leadership programs for youth based on personality and self-realization. For this, he has been playing various roles as an expert member of Korea Leisure & Recreation Association, lecturer of Dream, Hope, Future Leadership Center and team leader of Korea Institute for Youth Happiness. His focus is on introducing right directions of youth education and helping them find their own dream and vision. 

Under their own education method 'PLC (Play, Learn, Communicate)', Korea Career Coach Center is encouraging students to learn by their own senses and to solve problems by themselves. As a result, the percentage of engagement and participation is very high and the students are showing a great satisfaction. Choi said "playing is the best way to get along with students. I for myself could be able to learn and communicate with others by playing with my friends when I was young." 

The programs of center include 'Vision Camp' which focuses on motivation, 'Self Leadership' which focuses on recovery of confidence, 'Employment Camp' which enhances executive ability and 'Personality Leadership' which promotes humane leadership. Other recently developed program include 'Online Realtime Mentoring' which gives helpful and valuable advise to students in real time. As an expert in youth education, Choi has visited 126 schools and heard stories of dreams and passions from 3,400 students for the last 3 years. Choi said "most important thing in finding one's own career is to answer the question 'what kind of person do I want to be?' Our role, in this respect, is to help them find the answer and be a compass for their course of lives."

"Never give up but walk your own way"
Youth has a limitless possibility. And the possibility depends on how to use one's own talent and ability. For this reason, Choi emphasizes on finding one's own passion in work. He said "young people make 200% out of their capacity when they do the work which they really want to do. Grown ups forcing them to do the work other than they want only make them limit their capability. I can say that my job now is the result of my fighting to find the work I really want to do. The most important thing I would like to say to young people is "Never give up but walk your own way." Like there is a saying that "if you make steady and persistent effort in the work you love, you can be an expert", Choi believes that to push oneself to the end will be a great foundation for one's future. He continued "many grown ups tend to avoid telling young people what their true dream were but this is very important for youth to trouble themselves to find a right opportunity and vision in the course of their lives."

That is why Choi is focusing on securing more systematized education and the theory and logics that can back the system up. To extend his idea further, Choi is currently working on video education materials so that more students can easily obtain his educational materials. When asked about future goals, Choi said that he wanted to grow the center to be a social enterprise so that they can contribute to the development of the quality education in Korea.
