Enjoying a chat over natural yeast bread and coffee
Pohang's new landmark that leads new coffee culture
The couple CEO Gyeongduk Kim and Soohwe Kim of 'Sweet Step'

Amazing harmony made by combination of coffee and bread
The reason coffee culture was widely spread in Korea is not only because of its taste and aroma but also the 'place' in which it is served. Many people nowadays choose a coffee shop to meet and have a chat with friends or to be alone to think things over. With this trend in mind, the owners of thousands of coffee shops are competing by their own characteristics to attract more customers but just few can make a success in the business.

Located in Pohang City, Sweet Stop can be a good example of the success with its differentiated combination of coffee and natural yeast breads. For this reason, it is called as 'gourmet cafe' or 'trend setter' of the city by many people. Once you step into the shop, you are greeted with the savory smell of bread being cooked while your eyes get enchanted by a variety of cute and colorful breads and sandwiches displayed. All of these can go perfectly with a nice cup of coffee.
Soohwe Kim, who has mastered home baking and royal cuisine for the last ten years, bakes bread with 7 of her staff in the early morning everyday. They use the freshest ingredients and yeat but no chemical additivities or preservatives at all. The breads might go bad quickly for this reason but you can enjoy 100% healthy bread instead. Her husband Gyeongduk Kim, on the other hand, roasts coffee for 3 to 4 hours and extracts the freshest coffee everyday. With its deep and savory aroma, the coffee is sold 400 to 500 cups a day. Kim said "most important thing in the coffee business, I think, is customer satisfaction in addition to the healthiness, aroma and scent of the coffee."

Sticking to their guns
The couple opened Sweet Step in April 2012. They ran a franchise coffee shop before but fed up with the head office' inflexible management and the use of ingredients which prompted them to launch their own business. With their ambition in mind, the couple carried out a market research by visiting the famous coffee shops nationwide including on Garosu-gil, Samcheong-dong, Haeundae and Gangneung. And they finally applied their findings to a 3 storey coffee shop named as 'Sweet Step' in Pohang City. Kim said "people around us didn't agree with our idea at first as there were already more than 400 coffee shops in Pohang City and it was not a large franchise coffee chain. But we were confident that we could make it if we had our own unique taste and space."

And they proved they were right. With the bakery at the first floor and spacious second and third floor sleekly designed for a various private or business meeting, Sweet Step achieved more than $100,000 sales within a year of its opening.

Sweet Step is now regarded as a new landmark in Pohang City but Mr. and Mrs. Kim are not complacent. They are still travelling to Seoul to get inspiration for new development as well as learning the necessary skills from the masters in the fields. Kim said "we started the business in the hope of creating a unique cultural space in the city and we are sticking to our guns by continuous R&D."

Meanwhile, they have been donating part of the profit to children in need and other various social service groups. Also, they donate the left over breads on the day, which are still fresh, to Food Bank to be delivered to those who need them.
