[Interview] 다락방아트센터 오선신 대표
국내 포크아트의 선구자, 왕성한 창작욕으로 활동 이어가
소재를 가리지 않고 표현하는 예술의 매력

포크아트(folk art)는 중세 유럽의 귀족과 상류계급이 가구나 주방용품 등을 장식하기 위해 그림을 그려 넣었던 것에서 시작되었다. 포크아트는 이후 점차 농민 계층의 사람들에게도 퍼져 옛 가구나 집기 등에 고풍스러운 그림을 그려 넣으며 널리 퍼져나갔다. 포크아트는 다른 이름으로 톨 페인팅(tole painting)이라고도 불리며, 나라마다 부르는 명칭 또한 다양해 러시아는 조스토보(zhostovo), 노르웨이는 로즈마린(rosemaling) 등으로 나뉜다.

호주 유학길에서 포크아트의 매력 느껴

국내 포크아트의 선구자인 오선신 대표는 고등학교 때부터 동양화 클럽 활동을 하며 미술에 재능을 보였다. 동양화에서부터 서양의 전통 미술인 포크아트에 도달하기까지 오 대표는 그 사이 수많은 재료와 표현법을 거쳐 왔다. 1986년부터 지점토 공예를 시작했고 이후 한지공예와 동판 등을 거쳐 90년대에는 일본에서 건너온 스텐실 공예에도 빠져들었다. 그러던 중 에이전시의 초대로 포크아트를 한국에 처음 알리게 되는 10명 중 하나로 선발되어 호주 유학을 다녀온 것이 오 대표의 공예 인생의 중요한 전환기가 되었다.
오 대표는 “호주 유학을 각 도 대표로 한 명씩 갔는데 똑같이 공부를 해왔지만 나만의 스타일로 10명 선생님 중에서 로즈마린 패턴들을 남들보다 더 많이 작업을 했다. 개인적으로는 로즈마린 패턴에 대한 자신감이 있다”고 이야기한다. 다락방아트센터를 개원한 1987년 이후 이곳은 국내 포크아트의 산실이 되었다. 지점토에서부터 조형미술, 도자기, 옻칠 등 다양한 기법을 섭렵했지만 그녀의 포크아트에 대한 사랑은 여전하다.

2014년 포크아트로 국내 첫 개인전 가져
지역에 대한 봉사 통해 행복 느껴
오 대표는 2003년 대한민국 공예예술대전에서 로즈마린 장으로 대상을 받으며 주목받았고 2014년 포크아트 작품으로 국내 첫 개인전을 열었을 뿐 아니라 다수의 미술관과 전시회 등에서 그녀의 작품을 전시했다. 한편 2014년 5월에는 공예품대전 광주대회에서 옻칠 다용도 꽂이로 최우수상을 수상, 6월에는 관광기념품 공모전에서 ‘무등산의 밤하늘’이 대상을 수상하기도 했다.

오 대표는 호주에 다녀온 뒤 10년 간 국내에서 포크아트 관련 스터디를 진행했을 뿐 아니라 오랜 기간 여러 곳에서 강의를 한 덕분에 그녀에게 배운 제자들 중 현업에서 활동하는 인원만 2~300명 가까이 된다. 또한 광주 지역에서 중소기업청 특화사업, 군 사회복지사업, 벽화사업 등 다방면에서 봉사활동도 이어가고 있는데, “어렸을 때부터 누군가에게 뭔가를 해줄 수 있다는 게 행복하고, 해주면서 내가 얻는 게 더 많다고 느꼈다”고 한다.

소재를 가리지 않고 자유롭게 표현할 수 있는 예술

다락방아트센터에서 배울 수 있는 포크아트 과정은 나날이 그 인기가 높아지고 있다. 가장 중요한 이유는 포크아트가 실생활에서 활용도가 높은 종목이기 때문이다. 목재와 도자기, 철재 등 소재를 가리지 않고 자유롭게 그려낼 수 있다. 개인 비영리 법인 중 포크아트 분야에서는 최초로 사단법인을 취득한 다락방아트센터는 7월 말부터 청년 일자리 창출을 통해 소외계층과 취약계층에게 혜택을 줄 계획을 진행하고 있다.

쉼없는 강의 활동과 작품 활동 속에서도 오 대표는 2006년 ‘오선신 포크아트’라는 책을 쓰기도 했다. “미치지 않으면 할 수 없는 일인 만큼 많은 사람들의 관심과 사랑이 필요하다”고 이야기하는 오선신 대표는 9월 17일 문화의 전당 체험학습 공간에 참여할 계획이다. 광주를 대표하는 공예가로서 다양한 활동을 이어가고 있는 오 대표의 작품 세계는 이제 진정한 아름다움을 뽐낼 채비를 마쳤다. 이것이 그녀의 행보가 더욱 기대되는 이유일 것이다.

The pioneer of folk art in Korea Sunshin Oh showed her great interest in art since high school in which she actively participated in the activities of an oriental painting club. From oriental painting to western painting, Oh has tried numerous materials and styles. She started paper & clay craft in 1986, moved on to paper arts and copper plate and fell in love with stencil craft imported from Japan in the 90s. She then had an opportunity to study in Australia as one of ten folk artists who spread the art in Korea. 

Oh said "I particularly paid attention to Rose Marine Patterns and I'm confident with that." When she opened Attic Arts Center in 1987, it became the cradle of Korean folk art. Although Oh has many talent in various forms of art, she especially loves folk art.

Making one's life worthier through voluntary service
Oh drew a great attention by winning the grand prize with her work of Rose Marine at Korea Arts and Crafts Awards 2003. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and held a solo folk art exhibition for the first time in Korea in 2014. She also won the top prize with a multi-purpose lacquer ware shelf at Korea Crafts Competition in May 2014 in Gwangju and the grand prize with her work 'Night Sky of Mudeung Mountain' at Tourist Souvenir Competition in June the same year. 

After Oh came back to Korea, she carried out folk art study for 10 years and around 300 of her pupils are now active in the field. Apart from her artistic activities, Oh finds a great happiness by helping people in need and she has participated in various volunteer services including 'Special Project of Small and Medium Business Administration' in Gwangju and 'Army Social Welfare Project' and 'Mural Project'.

The popularity of Attic Arts Center is increasing day by day. The main reason is that folk art is closely related with daily life. You can create works according to your preference with various materials such as wood, pottery and steel. As the first corporate body in the field, Attic Arts Center is planning to give various benefits to disadvantaged people by creating jobs for young people from late July this year. 

Oh also wrote a book called 'Oh Sun-shin Folk Art' in 2006 despite her busy schedule. Oh said "I love what I'm doing and I want to share my passion with people." Meanwhile, Oh is participating in experience study at a cultural center on 17 September. As a representative artist of Gwangju City, Oh is determined to share her art with more people in the region.
