KSOE’'s professionalism in ocean engineering
Established in 1986, KSOE is a cooperative body of ISOPE (The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers) and a member of KAOST consisting of specialists from universities, research institutes and industries. They develop technologies through researches supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Ministry of Trade,

Industry and Energy which are needed in industries, and gather and share information and research results with related people to promote ocean engineering in Korea. Hong majored in ocean engineering and has worked as a researcher at KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ship & Ocean Engineering) in Daedeok Science Town for 30 years and has also been serving as an East Asia board member of ISOPE since 2012. ISOPE is one of three world’'s representative societies in the field including OTC(Offshore Technology Conference) and OMAE which is an affiliate of ASME, US. 

Hong led Offshore Plant Design Study Group in KSOE when Dr. Hong Seok-Won(former Director-General fo KRISO) took charge of KSOE 10 years ago and is leading major study groups for Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, Deep Water Research, Applied Materials Research for Offshore, and Coast Disaster Prevention Study. He also is holding a workshops twice a year for encouraging activities of the study groups.

Hong says “it is most important to share related knowledge as the paradigm in the field can change rapidly according to the development of technology. Many students  attend regularly our society to catch up the current trend in the field as the top specialists are working with us. Since 6 related societies hold an annual conference in spring in preparation for joint symposium within the boundary of KAOST the study groups in KSOE hold independent workshop in spring while and participate in KSOE’'s symposium in autumn. The last year autumn symposium was held in Jeju Island and it will be held in Daejeon in October this year.”

“Strengthening national policy and capacity are important to promote the market”
Korea has top competitiveness in shipbuilding, facilities, experience and manpower in the field but the current China’'s attack in the market is very strong as they possess oil fields. The solution to this for Korean shipbuilding companies is to work together rather than compete each other by establishing a consortium. For this, Hong has been carrying out a variety of activities as the technology chief, editor and board member of ISOPE for the last 25 years and has participated in various international exchanges and applied specialized approach to the field. 

Hong says “ROK has developed rapidly for the last 30 years and many fields have achieved a rapid success but the offshore plant industry is a difficult field to secure a success by working alone even if they reach a certain level of technology. Therefore, cooperation is a must and this covers not only professionalism in the field but also insight and vision about the field. For this, we need a long term our won independent plan backed by specialists from various fields. We need to build the second Dusung-ho (name of a ship), find new projects which we can be the main body such as developing foreign oil fields and design a novel offshore plant in a long term perspective.”

Passing down 30 years of experience to next generation
Apart from his various roles, Hong is also a specialist of VLFS(Very Large Floating Structures). He studied this field from 1999 to 2007 and drew a substantial academic results. In addition, he suggested a conception about ocean renewable energy and its related industries through cooperation with his colleagues covering from design manuals and analysis programs to its development. Hong says “"the ocean renewable energy industry is a global business. Countries around equator  can generate energy by using temperature difference between 4¡É underwater temperature and 25¡É to 29¡É surface temperature of the sea. Some countries around Pacific Ocean is also studying on desalination technology.
