밀양 명품 대추, 대중화에 나선다 
국내 첫 대추 시배지 밀양 단장면 

400여년 전통을 지닌 밀양대추는 우리나라 대추의 시배지로서 재약산과 천황산 중간산지의 입지적 조건이 양호하며, 주야간의 기온차가 심해 타 지역의 대추보다 당도가 높고, 광택이 뛰어나 전국적으로 인기가 많다. 오랜 역사와 시배지라는 점에서 오랫동안 쌓은 재배 기술을 통해 ‘명품 대추’를 생산하기로 유명하다. 현재 밀양시 단장면을 중심으로 700여개 농가의 대추 생산량은 200여 톤에 이른다. 그중에서도 대추의 명품화와 대중화를 위해 영농조합법인을 설립해 밀양의 대추를 전국에 알리고 있는 이가 있다. 밀양시 단장면 농업경영인 영농조합법인(대추푸드 대표)의 장준기 대표가 그 주인공이다.  

밀양 명품 대추, 대중화에 나선다 
국내 최대의 대추 집산지인 밀양시 단장면 농업경영인 영농조합법인의 장준기 대표는 주민들이 생산한 대추를 이용해 소비자 기호에 맞는 다양한 가공 제품을 생산하고 있다. 지난 2007년 대추 생산농가 50여명이 모여 법인을 설립한 영농조합법인은 사업비 3억 원을 들여 단장면 표충로 915 부지 1100㎡, 건물 370㎡의 대추 선별장과 저장창고를 건립하고 경남에서는 최초로 농산물 가공허가를 받았다. 영농조합법인은 지역에서 생산한 대추를 이용해 대추엑기스, 대추과자 등을 가공해 표충사를 찾는 관광객과 전국 소비자들에게 판매해 밀양대추 홍보, 대추 소비촉진 등 대추 가격 안정에도 기여하고 있다.

단장면 농업경영인 영농조합법인의 장준기 대표는 “400여년의 전통에 걸맞는 밀양대추의 명성을 되찾기 위해 농가들도 자구책을 마련하고 있으며 불필요한 경쟁보다는 지리적인 특징을 살려 차별화된 판로확보에 주력하고 있습니다. 현재 밀양대추는 밀양과 가까운 부산, 대구, 창원 등 인근 대도시와의 직거래가 활성화되어 안정적인 판로를 확보한 상태입니다. 이와 더불어 밀양시와 연계한 밀양 특산물 판매 홈페이지와 농가 개별적으로 홈페이지를 구축해 전국에 있는 소비자들에게 밀양의 대추를 공급하고 있습니다. 한때 중국산 대추로 인해 일시적인 어려움은 있었지만 중국산에 대한 불안감을 지닌 소비자들이 직접 찾아와 구매하는 사례가 늘어나면서 이제는 중국산대추와는 차별화된 유통체계를 확보했습니다”고 설명했다.

평생 농사를 지으며 정직한 먹거리를 소비자에게 제공했던 장 대표는 단장면의 특산품인 대추의 활성화를 위해 지난 2007년 지역 농민들과 힘을 모아 영농조합법인을 설립하게 되었다. “지역 특산물인 대추의 생산과 판매를 위해 대추즙과 대추칩 제조 및 가공시설을 설치하고 표준화된 명품 농산물을 생산하며 우수 농산물 브랜드를 등록하여 지역민의 일자리를 창출하고 지역사회에 기여하기 위해 설립한 단체입니다.”

현재 단장면 농업경영인 영농조합법인에서는 대추푸드라는 브랜드로 대추를 가공·판매하고 있다. 밀양에서 생산되는 대추 100%로 건조시킨 대추칩과 옛날 가마솥 방식 그대로 저온에서 장시간 달인 진액으로 대추 고유의 맛과 향을 지킨 대추엑기스, 죽염으로 유명한 인산가의 9회 죽염을 특허 출원된 기술로 만들어 대추과자의 맛과 향이 독특하며 건강까지 생각한 명품 대추과자가 대추푸드의 대표 주력제품이다.  

“대추의 사람에게 좋은 다양한 효능이 함유되어 있는데 그 중 주주보사이드A(jujubosideA)는 사포닌 중에 포함된 성분으로 중추신경 억제작용과 진통작용, 정신안정작용이 있어 스트레스를 이완시키고 신경안정에 좋아 숙면을 도와줍니다. 또 호흡기 질환에도 좋으며 혈액순환과 노화를 막아줍니다. 또한 함암효과에도 탁월하며 신경쇠약, 빈혈증, 식용부진, 액물의 독성을 풀어주며 위의 기능을 튼튼하게 하여 소화기관이 약한 사람에게 탁월한 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이런 좋은 성분이 다량으로 함유되어 있는 대추를 그동안 생대추, 건 대추를 위주로 판매해 오다 최근부터 다양한 소비자층을 겨냥하기 위해 대추엑기스, 대추과자 등 대추를 이용한 가공식품을 생산하고 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 대추를 이용한 가공식품을 더욱 연구해 대추조청 등 다양한 신상품을 개발해 소비촉진을 시킬것이며 타 지역과 차별화를 통해 전국 최대의 대추 생산지의 명성을 이어 갈 것입니다.”

향후 대추푸드의 다양한 판매와 활성화를 위해 옥션과 부산 신세계 백화점에 입점이 확정되어 소비자들을 기다리고 있으며 대추 수확시기에 맞춰 매년 가을에 열리는 대추축제의 활성화를 위해서도 더욱 정진할 것이라는 장준기 대표. 그의 바람처럼 밀양 단장면의 대추가 건강하고 정직한 먹거리로 국내 뿐 아니라 전 세계인들의 입맛을 사로 잡을 수 있도록 그의 행보에 기대해 본다.

Commercializing Miryang jujube
Danjang-myeon, Miryang City is Korea's largest jujube cultivation area and CEO Jang is producing various products by using jujube with the consideration of the different preference of consumers. The corporation was established in 2007 by 50 of jujube producers. With a $300,000 capital, they built a jujube separation house and storehouse on a 1100㎡ land with a 370㎡ building. They obtained jujube manufacturing certificate for the first time in South Gyeongsang Province. They make various jujube products such as jujube extract and jujube snacks. They also carry out promotional activities and contribute to stabilizing the price of jujube in the market. Jang says "Miryang jujube has a 400 years of history. Instead of competing each other, we established a corporation to secure a differentiated market. Currently, Miryang jujube has a sustainable market through direct dealing with nearby large cities such as Busan, Daegu and Changwon. Also, we use Miryang specialty homepage which is connected to the city and our individual homepage to sell our products nationwide. We once had a difficulty due to the import of Chinese jujube but luckily Korean people are still in doubt about Chinese products and buy Miryang jujube instead. For this, we built a differentiated distribution system."

Jang says "we produce one of Miryang jujube and make it into jujube extract and jujube snacks through our manufacturing and processing facilities. We registered our brand, produce it according to the standard and we are contributing to regional economy by creating jobs in the region." 

Their main products Daechu Chip (jujube chip) is made of 100% Miryang jujube and Daechu Ackis (jujube extract) is boiled for a long time at low temperature and have natural taste and scent of jujube and Daechu Gwaja (jujube snack) is made of patented Insan family's 9 times processed bamboo salt and provide unique taste and scent. 

Jang says "jujube contains a variety of beneficial effects. JujubosideA among them is one of substance in saponin which is effective in reducing pain, mental unstability, stress and helps a sound sleep. It is also good for blood circulation, delaying aging, cancer treatment, nervous breakdown, anemia, anorexia and indigestion. We originally sold raw jujube and dried jujube only but we now sold jujube extract, jujube chips and jujube snacks to satisfy the taste of consumers of all ages. We are also planning to develop various other forms of jujube including jujube syrup to keep our status as Korea's largest jujube cultivation area." 

Jang recently signed a contract with auction.co.kr and Shinsegae Department Store Busan. Jang has bean actively participating in Jujube Festival held every autumn and will do his best to promote Miryang jujube as a national healthy food.
