Strengthening research capability in basic science with great scholars in the world

Joint research with Nobel Prize winners

Protein Metabolism Medical Research Center was established to carry out joint research with medical professors and related researchers home and abroad with the key figures of Dr. Aaron Ciechanover and Dr. Avram Hershko of Technion – Israel Institute of Technology who won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004. Against common belief that protein degeneration does not play a major part except waste disposal process, the two winners have proved molecular biological mechanism of protein degradation by ubiquitin which resulted in giving birth to Ubiquitin-Proteism System.  

Recently, Kwon and Ciechanover have revealed the metabolism process of NF-kB transcription factor which plays a significant role in chronic inflammation and malignant tumor as well as the fact that KPC1 Ubiquitin Ligase is a strong tumor suppressor protein. The discovery was published in a world renowned biophysical journal 'Cell' on April 10, 2015. Since the find by Rudolph Virchow 150 years ago that chronic inflammation and malignant tumor are closely related, there have been a significant progress in molecular biology and it is revealed recently that NF-kB is the medium that connects chronic inflammation and malignant tumor. NF-kB plays an important role in life, death, growth and division of cells as it reacts to various stress and produces protein needed for the cells to overcome the difficulties. It also plays a key role in immunity & chronic inflammation of stress-sign delivery system such as cytokine, ultraviolet rays, bacteria and virus and produces protein helpful for life, death and spread of cancer cell. 

So far, NF-kB has been an important subject of immunity, inflammation and cancer treatment but the process of its protein metabolism which is the main controling element is relatively less known. Kwon says "in the research, we revealed in detail the biochemical mechanism of NF-kB and how it is produced and decomposed through being ubiquitin. Also, we explained about NF-kB cancer mechanism through revealing how KPC1 Ubiquitin Ligase, which makes p105 (NF-kB subunit precursor) into ubiquitin, is functioning as a strong tumor suppressor." It is expected that development of new medicines targeted for NF-kB and KPC1 will be accelerated and for this, Kwon plans to launch a research on KPC1 anti-cancer mechanism by using mutated rats as KPC1 liver cancer model. 

Introducing a successful model of foreign scholar invitation project
Protein Metabolism Medical Research Center is also working hard on revealing the connections between aging related diseases such as brain cell disease, cancer, cardiovascular conditioning, infection and immunity disease as well as developing innovative treatment and diagnostic bio-marker. Establishing the center is part of Seoul National University Medical School's effort to open their door to talented foreign scholars. In this respect, the foreign scholar invitation project of the center is creating a variety of synergy effect. Kwon says "working with talented foreign scholars is another way to promote industry-academic cooperation between countries as well as international exchange." Kwon confidently said that their foreign scholar invitation project will be a successful role model of related projects in the future. 

Meanwhile, alongside establishing the center, they launched an international society in the protein metabolism field to promote active exchanges between researcher and professors both home and abroad. They are also spreading the importance of basic science and the need of fostering medical scientists to students of all ages through various seminars and special lectures nationwide. 

The development of medical science and basic science is a must. Kwon says "you have to work on basic science for 10 to 20 years to prove your merits in the field. And you can achieve it by a continuous follow-up study." Kwon also mentioned that we need to improve our conception on research support system regardless government policies. Protein Metabolism Medical Research Center is highly expected to grow as the leader of protein metabolism medical research, the place where talented people exchange their knowledge and a global research institute which can create substantial outcomes.
