[Special Interview] Uri Gutman, Ambassador of Israel
Korea's promising partner to cooperate in various fields
From a country with water shortage to water export

ROK and Israel celebrated the 50-year anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic ties in 2012. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962, ROK and Israel have been building a strong relationship. Israel is Korea's 6th trade partner in the Middle East after the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar and Egypt and the main exchanges between the two countries include mobile phones, semi-conductor and cars. Israel is exerting its effort in securing talented people in the technical field and is drawing a bigger picture through cooperation and exchanges with ROK where the technology-intensive industry is highly developed. Power Korea has met Uri Gutman, Ambassador of Israel, in the Israeli Embassy in Jongno, Seoul, and heard about the bilateral ties between the two countries.

Continuing minister-level visits to Israel
Excellent R&D skills to turn water shortage to water export

Israel emerged as a role model for Korea's creative economy. Yun, Byung-se, the Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Israel last December followed by Lee, Dong-phil, the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in March this year. Lee praised Israel for the fact that the country overcame its environmental disadvantages and has grown to be an advanced country in agriculture. The reason Lee visited Israel was to benchmark the country's know-how in the hope of pushing forward the growth of the Korea's future agriculture. It is remarkable that a country with water shortage turned into a water export country through extensive R&D and investment backed up by related technology and training.

Israel's utilization rate of recycled water is 86% and this is extraordinary when compared to 22% of Spain which ranked No.2 in the field. Approximately 60% of water used in Israel comes from seawater desalination and the country has two of world's largest desalination plants. Also, 250 desalination plants in 40 countries were all built by Israeli corporations. Netafim, the world renowned Israeli company in the field of irrigation for agriculture and landscaping, developed methods to cultivate crops in desert region by connecting pipes to the root of plants so that the water is provided intermittently when needed. Netafim is one of the companies Lee visited.

ROK to benchmark excellent programs such as TALPIOT and Yozma Fund
Start Tel Aviv to be held to promote excellent global young start-ups

Starting with Science and Technology Agreement in 1994, ROK and Israel have signed various agreements including Cultural Cooperation Agreement, Customs Cooperation Agreement and Private Industry Technical Cooperation Agreement. In this context, ROK is trying to benchmark Israel's TALPIOT program which is an elite Israel Defense Forces training program that recruits those who have demonstrated outstanding academic ability in the sciences and leadership potential. ROK intends to use those talented people who learned advanced technology in the army as they can contribute to vitalizing private enterprises when they are discharged from military service. Also notable is that President Park announced last February on her '3 Year Economic Innovation Plan' that she would invest US$200M in domestic start-ups in cooperation with global VC through 'Korean Type Yozma Fund'. Yozma Group is the creator of the Israeli venture capital industry established in 1993 and the fund is consisted of 40% from the government and 60% from private companies. The Group also launched Yozma Group Korea and is carrying out Yozma Start-up Campus Project by investing US$1B in Korean venture enterprises. H.M. Uri Gutman says "Korea needs smart money. With its 20 years of experience, Yozma will play a role as a bridge between Israel and South Korea by supporting start-ups."

Meanwhile, the Israeli Embassy and Asan Nanum Foundation held Start Tel Aviv in 2013 and 2014. It is a global competition that brings together technology startups from 23 different countries around the world to compete for the opportunity to take part in an intense, five-day startup experience in Tel Aviv's unrivaled startup ecosystem. The prize this year is an intense, all-expense-paid, five-day startup experience in the heart of Tel Aviv, during the exciting and innovative DLD Festival and candidates aged between 25 and 40 in the web and mobile sectors can apply for the competition.

A variety of cultural events to be held in June and July
IsraAID to actively engage in curing post-traumatic stress disorder

The Israeli Embassy is exerting their utmost effort to promote Israeli culture in Korea. The Israeli a cappella group 'Voca People' recently held a concert in Seoul and Busan, and Yossi Berge and Oded Graf Dance Theater is scheduled to participate in Busan Int'l Dance Festival from Jun 12-16. Nadine Animato Theater Dance Company is also scheduled to participate in ASSITEJ Summer Festival held at Daehakro Arts Theater, Main Hall (Seoul) from Jul. 24 - Aug. 2 and at Osan Culture Center from Jul. 28-29.

Meanwhile, IsraAID, founded in 2001, as a non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to providing life-saving disaster relief and long term support, carried out post-traumatic stress disorder treatment project and its archiving in the devastated areas hit by the tsunami in Japan in 2011, and co-hosted a workshop with College of Social Welfare at Yonsei University in 2013. Recently, they carried out training for consultants and social workers related to the victims of Sewol ferry disaster.

According to a research from NEIBC, Israeli companies increased the profits of Massachusetts in the U.S. by 12.6% and created jobs by yearly 5.3% during the period between 2010 and 2012. If South Korea's capacity meets Israel's innovation and create substantial R&D and intellectual property, Korea will also play an influential role in the global stage like Israel. As business partners and cultural companions, South Korea and Israel will keep elevating cooperative ties.
