꿈과 희망을 만들어가는 ‘Find Your Color’ 스토리
“우리는 ‘행복한 또라이’, 내가 원하는 것을 찾는 여행의 완주자이다”

밝은 미래를 이야기하는 꿈 전도사들에게는 한때 인생의 어둠을 헤맸던 과거가 있다. 어둠 속에서 밝음을 찾은 그들은 자신의 경험을 공유하며 여전히 빛을 잃은 이들의 손을 잡아 새로운 곳으로 인도한다. 사람과 사람을 거쳐 가며 희망의 메시지는 점점 커져간다. 학벌과 스펙이 아닌, 인생의 빛깔과 목소리를 듣고 이름지어주는 사람. 김승환 FYC연구소 소장을 만나본다.

피할 수 없으면 즐기라. 자기계발에는 자신감 찾기도 있다
내성적인 어린 시절, 학창시절을 바친 전자공학도의 ‘공돌이’ 생활. 어쩌면 김승환 소장의 인생은 손질된 머리, 남들과 같은 출근 복장 속에 갇혔을 지도 모른다. 그러나 그는 내면의 무대 체질을 발견해 내 레크리에이션 동아리 MC, 쇼 호스트, DJ, 방송국 직원을 거쳐 스피치 석사과정을 밟아 ‘인간의 내면을 색칠하는’ 직업을 개척하게 된다. “너의 목소리를 찾으라”는 소통 전문 강사인 멘토 김창옥 선생의 조언을 따라, 김 소장은 직장에서 선두를 달리는 것보다 자신의 내면에서 우위를 차지하는 셀프리더십 전문가가 되었다. 두 자로 요약하자면 ‘강의’이지만, 구체적으로 설명하자면 소통과 이해, 대화, 유쾌한 공감 속에서 그동안 위장하고 숨겨왔던 진정한 자신을 돌아보며 웃음을 되찾게 하는 것이 그의 주된 업무 내용이다. 아름다운 음악을 들으며 평온을 찾는 소는 부드러운 우유를 만들고, 해맑은 날씨에 화분은 크고 근사한 꽃을 피운다.

삶의 여유란 그러할진대, 유독 인간만이 자기 자신을 사랑하는 법을 잊고 목표, 과제, 스펙에 국한한 자기계발에 짓눌려 점점 시들어 가는 역설 속에 산다. 행복해진다는 목표 때문에 점점 불행해지는 것이다. 전 연령을 아우르는 강의와 정신적으로 풍요로워지는 자기계발, 그리고 자존감 만들기와 행복 찾기 중심의 상담은 수많은 이들의 상처를 치유해 주었고, 치유를 이뤄낸 김 소장의 반창고들은 <머뭇거리는 젊음에게>라는 상담사례 저서로 세상에 나왔다. “길은 엄청나게 많은데 정해진 길로 가려니 친구들을 밟고 서야 하는 스트레스가 상당하다. 결혼과 자녀 출생과 맞물려 삶이 돌아가게 되니 그러기 전에 자존감을 키우고 뿌리를 찾아야 한다. 그러면 복잡한 사회생활을 하면서도 스트레스를 덜 받고 즐거워진다. 지금 준비 중인 두 번째 상담사례집은 훨씬 깊고 다양한 사례들을 담고 있을 것이다”

자기계발서를 많이 읽었다는 김 소장은 의외로 현실에서 독창적인 자기계발서를 찾기 힘들었다고 한다. “뭔가를 가르치려는 태도가 전제되어서일 것이다. 읽는 사람들이 무엇을 원하는지 모르는 듯했다. 7번째 직업이자 현재 하고 있는 강사직은 젊은이들에게 스트레스를 주지 않는 것, 틀에 박혀있지 말고 자신만의 달란트를 찾는 법에 중심을 두고 있다” ‘Find Your Color’를 모토로 하여 강의하면서 주위의 많은 호응을 바탕으로 정식 사무실 개업도 생각했지만, 가장 적절한 것은 연구소라고 생각했다. FYC연구소의 출발이었다. 그래서 강의 때 만난 제자들이 사회에 진출해 지금도 서울과 부산에서 정기 모임을 갖는다. “2013년부터는 워크숍을 하고 모임을 시작했다.

그 모임의 이름은 ‘행복한 또라이’다. 자기가 왜 행복한 또라이인지 말하는 모임이다. 월 1회씩 개최하는 동안 폭력과 술에 젖어 살던 사람이 요리에 입문해 유능한 셰프가 되거나, 자신만의 긍정적인 에너지를 직업과 결합해 발산하는 바람직한 사례가 늘었다” 여기서 말하는 또라이는 ‘또라이 질량보존의 법칙’, ‘회사를 와해시키는 또라이’가 아니다. 지금은 좀 특이하지만, 언젠가는 세상을 휘어잡을 카리스마일지도, 독특한 기질일 수도 있는 것이다. 또한 ‘고민 상담’이라는 목적으로 유지되는 중요한 전국 모임이 있다. 힘든 삶으로 정신과 치료를 받거나 아토피, 불임 등으로 고통 받아 피폐해진 삶을 우회적으로 표현하거나 언제든지 편하게 말할 수 있는 장이다. 그런 고통을 울면서 풀어놓는 동안 상처와 열등감은 사라지고 힐링과 자존감을 동시에 찾는 케이스도 많다고 한다. 김 소장은 강의의 목적을 자존감과 소통으로 정했기에 간혹 학교나 기업체의 강연에서 벌어지는 해프닝을 말한다. “대학은 취업을 시키는 곳인데 거기서 ‘취업하지 마라’를 말하는 것에 고개를 젓는 섭외 담당자들도 있다” 그러나 김 소장의 목표는 확고하다. 취업사관학교에서 자신의 달란트를 낭비하고, 남과 자신을 비교하는 데서 모든 고민이 출발한다고 믿기 때문이다.

인생의 무정형성, 예측불가함이 삶의 즐거움을 더해준다
“내 강의의 철학은 유쾌함과 즐거움이다. 강의하는 내 별명은 ‘미스터 빈’이다. 엄청나게 웃기는 강의 속에 가슴을 툭 치는 한 마디의 메시지를 집어넣는다. 웃고 즐긴 다음에 길을 걷고 나무를 보다 문득 누군가의 메시지가 떠오르는 것이 사람을 행복하게 하기 때문이다. 그래서 1년이 지나 그 때 강의가 떠올랐다고 인사하는 학생을 만나기도 한다. 이것이 나를 위한 최고의 피드백이다” 그래서 김 소장은 소통 중심의 강의에서 변화를 강요하지는 않는다. 자식을 바꾸려는 부모, 직원과 학생을 바꾸려는 리더는 소통을 틀어지게 만든다. FYC연구소는 순수한 모임으로 출발했기 때문에, 목표나 계획을 철저하게 세워 이뤄나가는 것보다는 예측불가한 삶의 기쁨을 받아들이고 거기서 나오는 궁금함을 긍정적인 에너지로 바꿔나가는 것이 중요하다고 김 소장은 말한다.

“나중에 여건이 된다면, ‘행복한 또라이들의 모임’에서 나온 얘기처럼 기대하지 않고 기다려주면 나오는 답을 현실에 옮기겠다. 연구소에서 무언가를 창출할 수도 있고, 외로움과 고독을 이겨내는 공동체를 만들 수도 있는 것이다. 어쩌면 대한민국 청년들이 가장 하고 싶은 회사나 단체를 만들 가능성도 있다. 지금 나에게 주어진 것에 충실하다면 수많은 가능성이 펼쳐질 것이다” 많은 기업들이 직책을 없애고 있듯, 김 소장은 강의를 나가며 교수님보다는 오빠, 형님으로 불리기를 원한다. “그것이 내 Color이다. 마치 콘서트와 쇼 같은 즐거운 강의, 셀프리더십을 가르치지만 강요하지 않는 것. 상담을 하다 보면 많은 것을 오히려 상대로부터 배우게 된다” 한때는 자신감만 키우는 것이 유행이던 때가 있었지만, 이제는 자존감이다. 그것은 개개인의 컬러를 만들어 간다. 누군가의 퍼스널리티, 색채를 찾아주는 소통의 직업. 미래 사회 인류를 보듬어줄 유망직종이 ‘힐링사’라는 말이 있다. 이제 고통과 가면을 벗겨 꿈을 찾는 것이 얼마나 아름다운지, 김승환 소장과 FYC연구소를 통해 느껴보자.

"If you can't avoid it, you might as well try and enjoy it"
Kim was rather introverted when he was a child. He majored in electronic engineering and worked as an ordinary company man with well-groomed hair in a formal suit. But he found his stage talent and went through various careers such as recreation MC, show host, DJ and broadcast staff and pioneered the job that 'colors the inner self of human being' eventually. Following the advice of his mentor Kim Chang-ok 'Find your own voice', Kim decided to become a self-leadership specialist rather than leading the race in the company. His job now is to find happiness by looking back himself through communication, understanding and sympathy in the form of lecturing.

A cow who listens to beautiful music and find a peace in her produce smooth milk and a plant in sunshine blossoms marvelous flowers. Life in a way means like the cow and the plant but human beings often forget how to love oneself and spend their lives in building goals, tasks and career to be happy ironically. Kim healed many of those who need a help by suggesting the ways for self-development, self-respect and being happy and his professional consulting cases are eventually compiled in his book called 'To the Youth hesitating'. Kim says "there are many ways in life but most of them ask you to stand on your friends and people around. It is better advised to find your self-respect before you get married and have children as you are likely to fall behind in finding yourself after that time. By doing that you can get less stress but more happiness. The second book I'm preparing will contain more of my in-depth consulting cases."

Happy weirdos (who indulged in beauty) to find life's true value
Although Kim read many self-development guide books, he could rarely find an inspiring one. Kim says "this is because those books tend to teach the readers without himself knowing about what the readers truly want. Being a lecturer is my 7th job and my focus is on giving ways to find one's own talent through breaking one's own cage. Under my motto 'Find Your Color', I launched FYC as a research institute. Those who listened to my lectures are currently having regular meetings in Seoul and Busan. From 2013, I started workshop and formed a group called 'Happy Weirdos'. People tell each other why they are happy weirdos in the group. I witnessed a case that a member being turned to be a talented chef from an alcoholic and a gangster and likewise many members turned their positive energy to having a right job."

Therefore, the word 'weirdo' in this case means to be positive. There is another group which provides consultation nationwide for people who are suffering from mental issues, atopy and infertility. Kim said that he witnessed many cases that people could heal themselves and recover self-respect while they share their pain and wound in tears in the group. Kim decided self-respect and communication as the goal of his lecture. Kim says "if I say 'do not get a job' in my lectures in university, some officials show their doubt about me." But Kim firmly believes that students are wasting their time and talent by comparing oneself with others and this is the very starting point of all troubles to come. 

"Life's unpredictability brings life's pleasure"
Kim says "the philosophy of my lecture is delight. My nickname is Mr. Bean. I put a touching one word in the middle of my funny lecture. It's like the happy moment when you get struck with an inspiring line while walking on the street or looking up a tree. I sometimes meet students who tell me my lecture a year ago was impressive and I feel really worth." For this reason, Kim does not force listeners to change themselves. Parents who try to change their children or leaders to the staff or students do not have any idea about communication. FYC advises people to accept life's unpredictability as life's pleasure and to turn the curiosity from the acceptance to positive energy. Kim says "with FYC, you can create something you want or make a group that can make people overcome their loneliness. You might create the biggest group which the Korean young people want to have the most. It is possible as long as you are honest with what you are doing now." Like many companies are eradicating titles, Kim also wants to be called simply as 'bro'. Kim adds "it's my color to give a concert-like lecture, to teach leadership but not force to have, and to learn from the audience." There once was a trend to find self-confidence but now is to find self-respect and Kim's job is to help people find their own color.
