전쟁빈국에서 도움 주는 나라로 성장한 대한민국의 힘
“무상교육과 나눔이라는 계몽운동으로 범국가적 사랑 전파”

커다란 기적의 시작은 우연이었다. 2006년, 현 월드채널 김동명 이사장이 사업차 들른 캄보디아는 더 이상 6.25 동란의 한국을 돕던 부유한 우방국이 아니었다. 인구 1/3인 지식인, 어린이들이 살해당한 자리에는 학교도 식량도 없는 암울한 땅만 있었다. 사비를 털어 두 팔 걷어 부친 김 이사장의 발자취에는 어느덧 1만 7천 여 명의 무상학교 졸업생과 2014년 설립된 몽골 무상학교라는 결실이 남았다. 월드채널이라는 이름으로 행해진 아름다운 여정을 짚어본다.

코트디부아르의 유명축구선수, 헐리웃 연예인 커플로 유명한 배우들이 빈국을 위해 행한 중요한 자선 사업이 바로 교육지원, 학교설립이라고 한다. ‘교육’은 말과 글을 배워 일자리를 얻고 더 큰 세상으로 나가도록 하는 최선의 배려다. 그래서 ‘교육’은 당장의 배고픔을 덜어주는 빵 한조각보다도, 누군가의 미래와 그의 국가를 위한 더할 나위 없는 선물이다. (사)나눔재단 월드채널((World Channel Sharing Foundation, 이하 월드채널)의 설립도 교육에서 시작된다. 모든 것은 김동명 이사장이 캄보디아 프놈펜의 가난하지만 꿈 많은 3명의 아이들에게 글을 가르쳐 준 것에서부터 시작된다.

그들은 일찍이 노동환경에 내몰리고 학비는커녕 단돈 1달러도 없어, 공책과 연필, 학교를 오갈 때 발을 편하게 할 신발 한 켤레를 살 돈조차 고향의 가족에게 송금해야 하는 아이들이었다. 킬링필드 내전으로 국민소득 400불미만의 아시아 최빈국으로 떨어진 나라의 아이들은 죄가 없었다. 김 이사장은 한때 한국전쟁에 식량을 지원하던 관광자원과 인재가 넘쳐나던 캄보디아를 회상했다. 그리고 프놈펜의 3층 건물을 빌려 ‘캄보디아 강남외국어학교’ 간판을 달았다. 한 알의 밀알이 되겠다는 김 이사장의 꿈대로 학교는 8개월 만에 500명의 학생으로 가득했고, 이후로도 학생들은 끝없이 학교로 몰려왔다. 소설 ‘상록수’의 여주인공 채영신처럼 눈물을 삼키며 아이들을 교실 밖으로 내보내 수업을 듣게 하던 김 이사장은, 우여곡절 끝에 스텝들의 도움을 받아 사비를 털어가며 손수 학교를 증축했다. “비가 오면 천막에서 그대로 비를 맞는 학생들을 그냥 보아 넘길 수가 없었다. 말도 안통하고 3개월이면 끝날 공사를 6개월로 늘려가며 공사비를 착복하려는 사람들이 자선의 의미를 곡해할 땐 억장이 무너졌다. 하지만 나의 사업비를 모두 털어 만든 학교가 문을 여는 날, 어쩌면 그 날이 28명의 교사와 관계자가 1,300명의 학생들을 가르치는 캄보디아 강남외국어학교가 메이저 방송에 소개되어 칭송받은 날보다 더 기뻤을지도 모른다”

그리고 9년 간 한국어, 영어, 중국어, 컴퓨터, 음악 등을 가르치며 문화 교육을 병행하는 교육과정을 진행 중이다. 우리 정부에 공인받기 전, 캄보디아 정부는 월드채널을 NGO에 등록시켜 행정적 절차를 풀어가게 해주었다. 그 외에도 월드채널의 이름으로 도시 학생들에게 농촌 학생에게 기부할 학용품을 모으는 운동을 매월 진행하여, 함께 가는 삶과 동료에 대한 사랑을 가르치며 가치관 형성을 돕고 있다.

올해로 1만 7천여 명이 넘는 졸업생을 냈다며 흐뭇해하는 김동명 이사장. 그는 월드채널의 일원으로 깜뽕스프주 뚜얼끌렁 마을에 월드채널 제 2학교를 세워 무료교육을 시행중이다. 그리고 2014년 10월에는 몽골 울란바타르에 제 3학교를 세워 언어와 문화를 가르쳐 어린 학생들에게 배움의 기쁨을 전함으로써 한류의 교육적 성과를 보이고 있다. 월드채널의 기본 가치는 빈민국의 아이들에게 최우선적으로 무상교육 혜택을 주는 것이고, 한편으로는 국제구호 NGO의 가치를 존중하며 해외사업에 이어 국내사업에도 헌신적인 활동을 보이고 있다. 캄보디아에서는 40여 만 명에게 봉사, 교육, 태양광 램프 보급, 빈민가 구제 등 조건 없는 혜택과 사랑을 전했으며, 국내에서는 봉사활동, 문화예술 자선공연과 독거노인, 차상위계층을 돕고 장학사업과 바자회 활동으로 성과를 얻으며 사회적 존경을 받고 있다.

자선사업은 재미없고 일률적이라는 평가가 무색할 만큼, 문화예술인들의 재능기부로 이루어지는 공연들은 흥미로우며 2009년 외교통상부의 정식 인증을 받은 이래 전국 7천여 명의 후원자들을 모아 십시일반의 힘을 국내와 세계로 전달하고 있다. 비록 세상을 밝히는 빛으로 기억되고 있지만, 오랫동안 교육 봉사활동에 천착한 이들의 삶은 고단했다. 20대로 요절한 ‘상록수’의 실존인물 최용신, 30대로 꺼져간 어린이들의 아버지 소파 방정환, 2010년 40대 후반의 한창 나이로 하늘의 별이 된 ‘울지마 톤즈’의 주인공 故 이태석 신부는 모두 교육이 빈곤을 물리치는 원동력이라 믿고 헌신했다. 올바른 뜻을 가진 리더십이 과로로 쓰러지는 악순환을 막고자, 임직원, 자원봉사자, 독지가들의 힘은 김 이사장의 고단하지만 보람찼던 삶을 뒷받침하고 있었다. 그래서 김 이사장은 성공한 기업가나 사업가를 꿈꾸었지만 교육봉사 사업에 헌신하는 임무를 수행하며, 나눔이 이어지는 삶 속에서 그저 행복하다고 한다. 그래서 2015년에는 미얀마와 라오스에 4,5번째 무상학교 건립을 준비하고 있다. 월드채널의 꿈은 지구상 어느 곳이라도, 배움의 소망을 가난 속에 숨기고 살아가는 사람들이 있다면 반드시 찾아간다. 그 꿈에는 한 알의 밀알을 꿈꾼 김 상임대표의 노력이 있었음은 분명한 사실이다. 그가 이끄는 월드채널은 1950년대 중반까지만 해도 미국 언론으로부터 회생불가 판정을 받았던 대한민국의 이름으로 세계에 봉사를 행함으로써, 대한민국은 한류문화, 나누고 베풀고 은혜를 더 크게 돌려준다는 이미지를 형성하며 지금도 한 계단씩을 오르고 있다. 이러한 공로를 인정받아 2015년 4월 6일, 김동명 이사장은 헤럴드경제가 주관하는 대한민국 가치경영대상을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. “지구촌 빈민가 아동들에게는 무상교육으로 희망을 주고, 앞으로도 구호물자지원으로 세계의 화합과 빈곤타파에 헌신하고자 한다”는 김 이사장에게 박수를 보내며, 그의 원대한 꿈이 앞으로도 세상을 밝고 건강하게 만들기를 기대해 본다.

Spreading pan-international enlightenment movement of free education and sharing

A big miracle happened by accident. When Kim visited Cambodia in 2006, the country was no longer the one who supported Korea in the Korean War. It was the land where 1/3 of the population were killed and there were no schools and food. After Kim and World Channel's active support, 17,000 students have now graduated from free schools.

Many celebrities built schools in the developing countries. Education cannot fill up the belly of those who are hungry for the moment but is the best gift our society can provide to build a better world. The establishment of World Channel also started from people who cherish education. It started from Kim who taught language for 3 Cambodian children in Phnom Penh. They were so poor that they did not even have shoes to wear. The civil war forced its own people to be the poorest people in the world. Kim looked back those times when Cambodia supported Korea with food. Kim borrowed a building and put up a signboard 'Cambodia Gangnam Foreign Language School'. Kim gathered 500 students in 8 months and more kept flooding in. Due to the limited place of the class Kim had to send some of the students to outside of the class, like the female protagonist in the Korean novel 'Sangroksu' did, but he soon extended the school with his own mony.

Kim says "I couldn't watch children studying in rain as the tent had holes. And I was angry when the constructors try to embezzle the construction money of school by prolonging its period double the time to 6 months. But when I opened extended school, all those sadness and disappointment were cleared out. It was a bigger day than the day that the school was broadcast on major TV channels." 28 teachers and officers have been teaching Korean, English, Chinese, computer and music for 1,300 students for 9 years. The Cambodian government registered World Channel to NGO before the Korean government gave them an approval. World Channel also gathers stationery from city students to donate them to rural students.

Kim established 2 more free schools in Cambodia and a the third school in Ulan Bator, Mongolia in October 2014 in order to teach children languages and culture. The value of World Channel is to provide free education for the children in the developing countries, respect the value of NGO and give social contribution activities. World Channel delivered voluntary services, education, solar energy lamps and saving the slums for 40,000 people in Cambodia as well as free cultural events, donation, scholarship and taking care of elderly people and underprivileged in Korea. World Channel was officially approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2009 and gathered 7,000 members to send the donation to the world. Yongshin Choi, the real person, who is characterized in Sangroksu but died in his 20s, Jeonghwan Bang, the father of children, who died in his 30s, and the father Taesuk Lee, the real person, who is characterized in the movie 'Don't Cry Tons' but died in his 40s, all said that education is the driving force that can free us from poverty. The staff and members of World Channel is doing their best to share Kim's work to prevent their leader from dying early due to overwork. Kim wanted to be a successful businessman or entrepreneur but he said that he is happier than ever. He is currently planning to build the 4th and 5th free schools in Myanmar and Laos in 2015. Kim and World Channel's good will and ardent activities are raising Korea's status in the world. For his contribution, Kim received 2015 Korea Value Management Award on 6 last month held by The Herald Business. Power Korea gives a big clap and support to Kim and World Channel.
