성경의 맨 마지막 말씀을 장식하는 요한계시록은 예수의 재림과 현 세상의 종말, 그리고 새로운 세상의 도래를 이야기하고 있다. 그러나 상징적인 내용 때문에 목회자와 교인들에게 요한계시록은 이해하기 어려운 것이었다. 실제로 국내에서 요한계시록에 대한 해설을 담고 있는 서적의 종류만 해도 백여 종이 넘는다. 경기도 수지에서 한동교회를 이끌고 있는 김천기 목사는 지난해 9월 기존에는 종말론으로 해석되었던 요한계시록을 축복의 말씀으로 풀이한 <요한계시록 파루시아 교과서>를 발간해 주목받고 있다.

개척교회로 시작한 목회자의 길 37년, 요한계시록에 대한 두려움 떨쳐내
김천기 목사는 왕십리 교회에서 부목사 생활을 하다 37년 전 강동구 명일동 개척교회로 목회자 활동을 시작했다. 지금 교회가 있는 수지 지역으로 온 것도 1995년의 일로 벌써 20년이 됐다. 그가 요한계시록에 대한 해설서를 집필하게 된 것은 “요한계시록에 대한 울렁증” 때문이었다. 30년 넘게 설교를 하면서도 요한계시록을 불과 10여 차례 정도밖에 다루지 못했고 말씀을 대할 때에도 자신감이 없어지며 가르칠 마음이 생기지 않았다고 한다.

“요한계시록이 심판과 진노, 재앙, 전쟁, 기근, 천재지변이 주가 되는 말씀이다 보니 현대인들에게 각광받는 말씀이 아니었습니다. 최근에는 축복 설교, 비전과 꿈에 대한 설교, 교인들에게 희망을 주는 설교가 주목받고 있는데 진노와 채찍이 끊임없이 등장하는 요한계시록을 가르칠 마음이 잘 들지 않았죠.”

김 목사가 고민을 거듭하고 있을 때 그의 운명을 바꾼 질문이 있었다. 그의 교회에서 10년 이상 독실한 신앙생활을 한 어느 성도가 이단의 교리를 듣고 “‘14만 4천 명만 구원받을 수 있고 이 14만 4천 명이 우리에게 와야 한다.’고 하는데 이것이 무슨 말입니까”라는 질문을 김 목사에게 던진 것이다. 그 때 김 목사는 대단한 충격을 받았다. 첫째는 이제껏 요한계시록을 가르치지 않았는데 이제는 가르쳐달라는 이야기를 한다는 것에서였고 두 번째는 정말 열심히 배운 성도인데도 이 내용을 정확히 알고 있지 못한다면 그보다 덜 열성적인 성도들 역시 쉽게 유혹에 빠질 수 있겠다는 것 때문이었다.

거듭 읽으며 깨달은 말씀 담은 <요한계시록 파루시아 교과서> 출간
재림신앙 회복해 '그리스도가 오신다'는 희망을 전파하는 것이 목표
김 목사는 곧바로 서점에서 요한계시록에 대한 해설서를 사서 읽어보았지만 각각이 주장하는 내용이 너무나 달랐고 종합해서 해석하더라도 1장부터 22장 끝까지 한 가지 목표를 향해 가는 것이 너무나 어렵다는 것을 깨달았다. 김 목사는 모든 학설과 해설서를 내려놓고 일단 계시록을 찬찬히 읽기 시작했다. 초대 교회의 교인들부터 2천여 년이 지난 지금까지 아직까지도 이 내용을 정확히 짚어내지 못했다면 잘못된 말씀이라는 것일 텐데 그럴 리 없다는 것이 그의 생각이었다.

“어린 양을 왜 어린 양이라고 표현했을까. 일곱 인은 왜 일곱 인이라고 했을까. 나팔은 왜 나팔이라고 했을까” 등 표현된 의미 자체에 대한 질문을 계속 던지며 거듭 읽어나갔고 목사님들이 모이는 모임에 가서 요한계시록에 대한 설교도 했다. 그 때 이 내용을 책으로 쓰는 것이 좋겠다는 권유를 받고 책을 쓰기 시작한 것이 지난해 7월, 그로부터 2개월이 지난해 9월 26일에 <요한계시록 파루시아 교과서>가 빛을 보게 됐다.

‘파루시아’는 헬라어 원어로 ‘메시야(왕)이 임하신다.’는 의미를 담은 말로 흔히 쓰이는 ‘재림’보다 더욱 간절하고 좋은 의미를 담고 있다. 이제까지 심판과 진노와 재앙 등에 집중한 해석이 득세해 하나님을 폭력의 신으로 해석하고 묘사하는 것에서 벗어나 예수님이 오시는 것에 대한 신호이자 희망의 말씀으로서의 계시록을 전파하는 것이 김 목사의 목표다. 그는 “요한계시록은 ‘내가 가서 다시 오겠다, 처소를 예비하면 다시 오겠다’고 하셨지만 오래도록 오시지 못한 예수님이 보내는 사랑의 편지인 것입니다. 기독교의 최대 목표는 예수님이 재림하시고 새 하늘과 새 땅으로 가는 것입니다”라며 재림신앙 회복의 의지를 표시했다.

올해 초까지 엘림장애인선교회 대표회장으로 3천 명 규모의 축복성회 진행해

한편 김천기 목사는 (사)엘림장애인선교회(대표회장 박명순 목사, 사무총장 고창수 목사)에서 2008년부터 7년 간 대표회장직을 맡아 장애인들과 함께하는 선교 사역을 진행해왔다. (사)엘림장애인선교회는 포천 한국중앙기도원에서 1년에 한 차례 부흥회를 진행하는데 올해로 24년 째 매 해 3천 명이 넘는 규모의 행사를 진행하며 축복을 나누고 있다. 대표회장을 비롯한 목사님들의 헌금만으로 행사를 운영하는 것이 쉽지는 않았지만 “장애인들 역시 한 영혼이니 그 분들도 구원해야 한다”는 일념으로 희생의 선교 활동에 앞장선 것이다.

김 목사는 <요한계시록 파루시아 교과서>를 출간한 후 경기도 일원과 충청도, 호남 지방을 돌며 20여 차례 요한계시록세미나와 사경회를 진행했으며, 올해부터는 경상도와 강원도 영동과 영남 지방 등을 방문할 예정이다. 김 목사는 파루시아비전선교회를 조직해 “한국과 세계의 모든 교회가 주의 사랑의 편지 요한계시록을 읽게 만들고, 교회 강단에서 설교하게 하고, 하나님의 명예를 회복하는 세 가지 목표를 두고 활동을 이어가고 있다”고 하며 “12장부터 22장까지의 하권을 집필 중”이라는 소식을 전했다. “교인들이 다시 한 번 재림의 약속을 믿고 요한계시록을 읽어야 한다는 말을 전하고 싶다”고 이야기하는 김 목사는 앞으로도 활발한 저술 활동과 강연 등으로 대한민국에 올바른 복음을 전파하기 위해 앞장설 것이다.

37 years of pastor's path to make clear The Book of Revelation
Kim served as a curate in Wangsimni Church before he planted a new church in Myeongil-dong, Gangdong District, Seoul 37 years ago. He then moved to Suji, Yongin 20 years ago in 1995. The reason he wrote a guidebook on The Book of Revelation is his phobia about the revelation. Although he preached for 30 years he could quote the revelation for only 10 times as he did not fully understand its contents. Kim says "the revelation mainly is about judgement, rage, disaster, war, famine and cataclysm which are not popular subject for busy modern people who like blessing, dream, hope and vision. That's why I also didn't want to deal with it at first." But the motivation happened when one of his believers asked him after hearing heretical doctrine "I heard that only 144,000 believers are said to be saved and this must come to us. What does it mean?" Kim was alarmed on the fact that the ardent believer like the questioner can be easily tempted by heresy which means that normal believer can be even more vulnerable. Kim then decided to study The Book of Revelation thoroughly.

Recovering the faith in the Advent to spread the gospel
Kim bought several guidebooks on the Revelation but each book provided different point of view and it was difficult to explain it with consistency from chapter 1 to 22. Kim changed his method and started to read the Revelation slowly but thoroughly. Kim threw questions "Why a little lamb is expressed with the words little lamb?", "Why seven people as seven people and why trumpet as trumpet?". Kim ardently read the Revelation and provided preach for fellow pastors. Then he was advised to write a book about the Revelation and wrote the book in the two month period and published it on 26 September last year. The word 'parousia' in Greek means 'messiah will come again' which contains better meaning than the Advent. If the existing guidebooks interpreted the Revelation with the God as god of violence through judgement, rage and disaster, Kim interpreted it as the words of hope and the Advent. Kim says "The Revelation tells us that messiah will come again but it is a love letter from Jesus who has not yet come again for a long time. The ultimate goal of Christianity is to wait the Advent and to go to heaven."

Kim has been serving as the Chairman of Ellim Mission for Disabled for 7 years since 2008. The Mission holds revival services once a year at Korea Central Prayer House. It has run for 24 years and approximately 3,000 believers are participating every year to share blessings. It was not easy to hold the event with offering(running cost) only from the pastors but Kim ardently carried it out for salvation of disabled. After the releasing of his book, Kim has held seminars and Bible classes for 20 times in Gyeonggi, Chungcheong Provinces and Honam and is planning to do it in Gyeongsang and Gangwon Provinces, Youngdong and Youngnam in the future. Kim also formed Parousia Visionary Mission to make the world read the Revelation and to give preach about the Revelation in the hope of recovering the honor of the God. Kim added "I'm currently writing the second guidebook based on the chapter between 12 to 22 and I would like to emphasize one more time that people must read the Revelation and believe in the Advent."
