한복은 화려하고 우아한 느낌에서 단아하고 차분한 느낌까지 원단 재료와 만드는 방법에 따라 천차만별의 매력을 자아낸다. 옷고름과 소매, 장신구 등 만들면서 신경 써야 할 부분이 한두 가지가 아니고 입고 보관하는 데에도 많은 손길이 필요하다. 바로 이런 점 때문에 현대에 와서는 소재와 디자인을 대중적으로 가져가 입고 보관하기 편한 개량한복이 인기를 얻게 됐다. 한복에 대한 관심은 긍정적이라 할 수 있지만, 한편으로 품질과 상관없이 싸게 입는 옷이라는 인식이 생긴 것도 사실이다.

박술녀 디자이너는 한민족의 얼과 정신이 깃든 한복의 명품화를 통해 세계에 자랑스럽게 내놓을 수 있는 최고급 명품 한복을 만드는 것으로 널리 알려진 국내 대표 한복 디자이너다. 최고급 원단을 사용하여 한 땀 한 땀 빈틈이 보이지 않는 고급스러운 마감까지, 박 대표의 한복은 세계 각지에서 한국 고유의 미를 전파하는 한국 문화 전도사의 역할을 다하고 있다. 박 대표의 한복은 KBS 드라마 ‘추노’, ‘경성스캔들’, ‘넝쿨째 굴러온 당신’ 등 인기 드라마에 협찬했고, 최근 인기리에 종영한 MBC 드라마 ‘왔다 장보리’에서는 극 중 배경이 되는 가상의 한복명가 비술채에서 박 대표의 한복이 단아하고 고운 자태를 뽐냈다.

정성과 영혼을 담아 한복에 대해 연구하고 디자인 전반을 감수하려면 잠 잘 시간도 아까울 만큼 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있지만 박 대표가 각종 TV 프로그램 협찬과 출연을 지속하는 것은, 우리 국민들이 한복에 대해 다시 생각해볼 수 있는 기회를 만들고 싶은 소망 때문이다.

충남 서천에서 태어나 어린 시절부터 어머니에게 바느질과 다리미질을 배우며 시간만 나면 한복집 앞을 찾아가곤 했던 박술녀 디자이너는 24세에 한복 명인 이리자 선생의 문하생 생활을 하며 한복 만드는 법을 배웠다. 다른 문하생들보다 늦은 나이에 한복의 길로 들어선 만큼 전통 한복을 배우는 박 대표의 열정은 누구보다도 앞서 있었다. 매일 밤잠을 줄여 옷감을 만지며 실과 바늘을 놓지 않은 결과, 그로부터 10년여가 지난 후 박술녀한복은 우리나라 패션의 중심 청담동까지 진출하며 한국을 대표하는 한복 브랜드로 자리 잡았다.

30여년 한복 브랜드 외길을 걸어오면서 개인적으로 힘든 순간들도 많았다. 20여 년 전 여동생과의 갑작스러운 사별은 오랜 시간이 지난 지금까지도 박 대표에게 가슴 아픈 기억으로 남아있다. 박 대표 스스로도 최근 병을 얻었던 경험으로 건강의 소중함을 깨달았다. 매일 4시간도 안 되는 쪽잠을 자면서 한복에 대한 연구를 쉬지 않았던 박 대표는 갑상선암을 선고받고 수술까지 받아야 했다. 아이 둘을 낳은 후에도 3일 만에 일터로 돌아갔던 박 대표이지만 과로와 스트레스를 줄이기 위해 단전호흡과 근육운동을 하며 건강을 되찾았다.

박술녀 디자이너의 한복은 한국 전통 예술인 수묵담채화를 닮았다. 은은한 색감과 부드럽게 흘러내리는 곡선, 힘 있는 직선의 조합은 보는 이로 하여금 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없는 깊이를 느끼게 해준다. 박 대표는 이런 한국의 아름다움을 전 세계에 알리기 위해 다방면의 노력을 하고 있다. 공중파 드라마로서는 드물게 한복의 전통을 이어가는 사람들의 이야기를 다룬 ‘왔다 장보리’에 박 대표의 의상을 협찬한 것 역시 이와 같은 맥락이다. 지난 해 브라질 월드컵 응원단 특집을 기획했던 MBC 예능 프로그램 무한도전에도 박 대표의 작품이 등장했다. 그 밖에 2010년 제23회 월드미스유니버시티 세계대회 후보 한복쇼를 열었고, 2012년에는 런던에서 열린 MBC 코리아 컬쳐 페스티벌에 패션쇼로 참여했다.

박술녀한복은 2008년 한복업계 최초로 경영 혁신형 중소기업(Mainbiz) 인증을 받았으며 지난해에는 대한민국 명가명품대상 한복부문 대상을 수상했다. 국내외 귀빈과 여러 관계자들이 참석하는 패션쇼를 주기적으로 개최해 명품 한복 패션의 아름다움을 알렸을 뿐 아니라 지난해 하버드 대학생들의 korea trek 한국방문 한복체험행사를 개최해 해외에도 우리 문화의 자랑인 한복을 알리는 가교의 역할을 했다. 이처럼 우리 명품 한복의 아름다움을 예술로 승화시켜 세계를 위한 한복을 만드는 박술녀한복의 행보는 한복 브랜드에 대한 끊임없는 연구와 혁신으로 인해 가능했다 할 수 있다. 박술녀 디자이너의 손길로 인해 우리 한복의 아름다움이 쉼 없이 새롭게 계승 발전될 수 있기를 기대해본다.

Hanbok has tons of attractions from brilliant and stunning feelings to calm and placid feelings in variety by original textile and way to make. There are many things coming along to consider when making Hanbok and it needs lots of care when wearing and keeping it as well. Because of that, modernized Hanbok fitting in these days is more popular by removing many tedious parts. On one hand, it is positive for people to be still interested in wearing but on the other hand, it is also true to buy this regardless of quality. 

Designer Park Sul Nyeo is the most popular Hanbok designer who is making proud and prestige Hanbok embracing Korean people’s spirit and soul to the world. She is using the premium textile and finishing with perfection, so her Hanbok looks luxurious. Her work is also doing as a messenger of Korean culture to the world with spreading Korean beauty. Designer Park’s Hanbok was cooperating for some dramas like ‘Choono’, ‘Gyeongsung Scandal’ and ‘My husband got a family’ on TV and recently, for the drama, ‘Here comes, Jamg Bori’ her beautiful and fantastic Hanbok was showing off at BISULCHAE, which was a fake on the scenario. As studying for Hanbok and checking all the process to make products with her brand, she is too busy as not much possible to sleep enough, but the reason why she keeps working with TV dramas and shows on some programs is because she wants to make a chance to think of Hanbok again from a different view for the people.

Park Sul Nyeo was born in Seocheon, Choongnam and learned how to sew and iron from her mother and she used to go to Hanbok shop in her spare time. When she was 24, she learned under Hanbok master Lee Lee-Ja. As she became a student late compared to other her colleagues, her passion for Hanbok was outstanding and passionate more than anyone. She reduced the time of sleeping every night for learning it, and then she built up her own brand in Cheongdam-dong where all the expensive fashion shops are condensed in 10 years. Since then Park Sul Nyeo Hanbok has been one of most famous Hanbok shops. 

There are many hard times while she was working on Hanbok. 20 years ago, she let her sister to death all of a sudden and this is still saddening her. Lately, her health was not good and she is taking a good care of herself now. She never stopped studying for Hanbok with only 4 hours of sleeping every night for years, and finally she got diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma and took a surgery. After delivering 2 babies, she always came back to work in three days. Nowadays, she is working on the hypogastric breathing and weight training for keeping healthy.

Park Sul Nyeo’s Hanbok looks like a wash drawing with Indian ink, which is our traditional art. Delicate colors and soft flowing curves and powerful straight lines in a combination make us feel the depth that we never felt before. CEO Park is trying to let the world know about the beauty of Hanbok in many ways. The drama ‘Here comes, Jamg Bori’ was talking about people who are working on Hanbok, which was a rare story on air, so she provided her Hanbok for that drama for that reason. 

Last year, MBC entertaining program, ‘Infinite Challenge’ had a special event for Brazil cheerleading team and her Hanbok was showing through the program. Other than that, she had a Hanbok show at the 23rd WORLD MISS UNIVERSITY event in 2010 and joined MBC KOREA CULTURE FESTIVAL held in London in 2012. 

Park Sul Nyeo Hanbok acquired the first certification of Mainbiz in the Hanbok industry in 2008 and last year, her brand received the grand prix of KOREA premium awards. She is hosting a Hanbok fashion show regularly so as to show off the Korean Hanbok’s beauty to the world and hosted Korea-trek of Hanbok experience event for Harvard students last year. Like this, she has been trying to be a bridge to introduce Hanbok to the people over the world. She is not only making Hanbok as a dress but also sublimating that as an art to the world and this Park Sul Nyeo Hanbok’s path was possible with her constant study and innovation. By that, we expect our Hanbok would be improving and taking over to next generation constantly by her exploit and contribution.
