국제 학술지 논문 게재와 첨단기술연구로 여성의료의 새 지평을 열다

지난해 한 연구결과에 따르면 우리나라 여성들의 첫 출산 나이는 30.3세라고 한다. 게다가 여성 한 명이 평생 낳는 아이의 수는 세계 최저 수준인 1.08명이다. 물론 경제적 이유나 육아 문제 등으로 출산을 기피하는 사례도 많지만, 아이를 낳고 싶어도 임신이 되지 않아 고민하는 불임 부부도 많다. 불임시술 전문병원인 광주 시엘병원은 불임으로 고민하고 있는 이들에게 최고의 의료기술을 바탕으로 생명의 희망을 전하고 있다.
여성의 건강과 행복을 위한 끊임없는 연구
불임이란 피임을 시행하지 않는 부부가 정상적인 부부관계에도 불구하고 1년 이내에 임신에 도달하지 못한 경우를 일컫는다. 우리나라 전체 가임여성 중 10~15%가 불임으로 고통 받고 있으며, 이는 저출산의 한 원인이 되고 있다.
지난 2000년 9월, 광주 서구에 개원한 시엘병원은 시험관아기 시술의 풍부한 경험을 가진 국내 최고수준의 불임시술 전문병원이다. 개원 이래 연 평균 약 1200건의 시험관아기 시술을 하고 있는 시엘병원은 그간 축적된 노하우를 바탕으로 여타 병원의 일반적인 평균 임신율 40%에 비해 5% 가량 더 높은 수치를 기록하고 있다.
시엘병원이 이처럼 높은 성과를 보이고 있는 이유는 이들이 지속적인 연구 활동을 펼치고 있는 연구중심 병원이기 때문이다. 최범채 병원장은 “시엘병원은 학문적 열정을 가진 전문의와 연구자들의 연구 활동을 적극적으로 후원하고 있습니다. 전 세계 20여국에 50여명의 해외 제자들을 거느리고 있으며 2000년 개원한 이후 과학논문인용색인(SCI)급 논문 20개 등 37개의 논문을 학회지에 게재해왔습니다”라고 밝혔다. 실제로 최범채 원장은 불임과 관련된 다양한 연구를 수행해왔으며 특히 ‘습관성유산과 다낭성 난소증후군’에 대한 연구 논문을 통하여 저명한 국제학회에 20여 차례 초청연자로 활동해왔으며 2002년에는 ‘습관성유산의 진단과 치료’ 관하여 미국 하버드 의과대학 죠셉힐 교수와 공동저자로 전 세계 대표적인 부인과 교과서인 NOVAK's Gynecology에 게재되기도 했다.
시엘병원은 국내외 학술기관과 생식의학 발전을 위해서 활발한 상호교류를 도모하고 있으며, 차 의과대학 백광현 교수, 란이 연구원과 공동 연구한 ‘습관성 유산 원인 규명’ 논문이 ‘2013년 대한생식학회 우수논문상’을 수상하기도 했으며 이를 포함 국내 외 학술대회에서 8차례 학술상 수상 경력이 이채롭다. 또한 최 원장은 ‘2015년 한·일 불임학술대회’ 세미나를 여수로 유치하는 데에 결정적인 역할을 했으며, 한일 불임 학술대회 회장으로 선임되기도 했다.
몽골 공공의료 발전을 견인하다
시엘병원의 활발한 교류활동은 연구영역에서 그치지 않는다. 오랫동안 몽골과 인연을 맺어온 최 원장은 현지의 열악한 의료시스템을 개선하기 위해 노력한 공로를 인정받아 지난해 7월 몽골 정부로부터 ‘보건의료 분야 훈장’을 받았다. 이 훈장은 현지 의사들도 10년 이상 공공 의료발전에 이바지한 사실이 인정됐을 때 받을 수 있는 것으로 외국인 의사가 받은 경우는 매우 드물다.
최 원장은 2010년 몽골에 병원을 설립한 선배 의료인의 권유로 처음 몽골을 방문한 이래, 30여 차례에 걸쳐 현지 병원을 방문해 산부인과 환자를 진료해오고 있다. 2011년에는 UN 산하기구(UNFPA)에서 주관하는 프로그램에 참여해 몽골 산부인과 의사 8명을 교육했으며, 이를 계기로 몽골 보건성 인구문제 자문의사로 위촉되기도 했다. 이후에도 최 원장은 10여 명의 젊은 몽골의사를 시엘병원으로 초청해 불임증 및 부인과 시술법을 전수하고, 원격화상 진료시스템을 이용해 한국에서 몽골 제자들의 궁금증을 풀어주기도 했다. 2011년에는 몽골국립모자보건센터에 인큐베이터를 비롯한 분만에 필요한 의료기자재를 기증하기도 했으며, 최근에는 몽골 국립 의대에서 5년간 10명을 선발해 학비를 지원하고 방학 기간 시엘병원에서 실습(Internship)하도록 하는 협약도 체결했다. 시엘병원은 직원 10%를 다문화 이주여성으로 채용하는 것으로도 잘 알려져 있다.
최 원장은 “몽골은 아직까지도 영유아 사망률이 높고 의료적으로 낙후되어 있습니다. 저희는 몽골 현지 병원과 연계해 좀 더 저렴한 비용으로 한국에 방문해 안전하고 성공률 높은 불임시술을 받을 수 있는 시스템을 운영하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 2010년부터 지금까지 시엘병원 새생명 탄생 센터에서 도움을 받아 임신에 성공한 몽골인 부부들이 300여명이나 된다. 외국인이 시험관아기시술을 받기위해 지방에 위치한 시엘병원을 찾는 큰 이유는 차별화된 임신성공률 때문이라는 후문이다. 시엘병원은 오는 6월 6일에 몽골 현지 호텔에서 그동안 시엘병원 도움으로 임신성공한 부부들과 아이들을 초청하여 ‘CLWH Fertility Forum’ 을 개최한다.
외국인 환자를 위한 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있는 시엘병원은 지난 2013년에는 법무부 지정 외국인 환자 우수유치기관으로 지정됐다. 전국 총 13개 기관이 선정된 가운데 광주·전남지역에서는 이곳이 유일하게 선정됐다. 지금까지 불임증 치료와 부인과 수술을 받기 위해 연 300여 명 이상의 외국인 환자가 방문한 시엘병원은 모든 안내판이 영어, 중국어, 일본어, 러시아어, 몽골어로 표기되어 있으며, 6개국의 언어를 모두 통역·상담할 수 있는 인력과 시스템을 갖추고 있다.

Opens a new leaf of women’s medicine with articles in an international journal and advanced technical research

According to the result of a research last year, women’s age of giving birth to her first baby is 30.3 in our country. Moreover, the number of babies one woman has for the whole life is 1.08 person, the lowest level in the world. Though, of course, there are many cases of avoiding childbirth for economic or childcare reason, there are also many couples of sterility who worry over failing to be pregnant when they want a baby. Gwangju CLWH specializing in sterility is sending hope for life to many people in trouble over sterility, based on the highest medical techniques.
Constant research for women’s health and happiness
Sterility means the case where a couple without using contraception fail to be pregnant within one year despite normal sexual intercourse. Of the total women of childbearing age, 10-15% are suffering from sterility which constitutes a cause of low birthrates.
CLWH, which opened at Seo-gu of Gwangju in September 2000, is the top-class sterility hospital with a rich experience in a tube-baby administration of medicine. Since its opening, the CLWH has been operating around 1200 cases of tube baby on annual average, recording 5% higher than other hospitals’ average pregnancy rate of 40%, based on the knowhow piled up so far.
Such a high result shown by CLWH is because it is a research-focused hospital where the staff is engaging in continued research activities. President Choi Bum-Chae explained, “CL Hospital is positively supporting the specialists’ and researchers’ research activities. We have over fifty pupils in 20 countries overseas, and since 2000 opening, we have had 37 papers carried on the journal including 20 SCI-class articles. Actually, president Choi Bum-Chae has conducted diverse researches in relation to sterility, and especially, through research papers on ‘habitual abortion and polycystic ovary syndrome’ he has been invited to well-known international congress as speaker, and in 2002, his co-authored work ‘diagnosis and treatment of habitual abortion’ with Prof. Joseph Hill, Harvard Medical School, appeared on Novaks’ Gynecology, a representative gynecology textbook of the whole world.
CLWH is doing active mutual exchange with domestic and foreign academic institutions for development of reproductive medicine. The paper ‘Causes of recurrent miscarriage,’ a joint research with Prof. Baek Gwang-hyun (Cha Medical School) and researcher Rani, won ‘the best paper award for 2013 Korean Society for Reproductive Medicine,’ Including this, the hospital received 8 times of awards at domestic and foreign academic conferences. President Choi played the decisive role in attracting ‘2015 Korea-Japan Sterility Conference to Yeosoo, who was also selected as president of the Conference.
Drives development of Mongol public medicine
CLWH’s active exchange extends further than research field. President Choi, who has been in connection with Mongol for a long time, received ‘a medal for public medicine’ from Mongolian government in July last year for his endeavor to improve the local poor medical system. This medal can be conferred even on local doctors after 10 years’ contribution to public medicine development, so it was a rarity for a foreign doctor to receive this.
Since he visited Mongol for the first time in 2010 by invitation of a senior medical person who had established a hospital there, president Choi has visited the local hospital over 30 times to treat obstetrics patients. In 2011, he participated in a program supervised by UNFPA to educate 8 Mongol obstetricians, and on this opportunity he was appointed as an advisory doctor for population problem under Mongol Ministry of Health. Then, president Choi invited a dozen young Mongol doctors to CLWH to teach fertility and gynecological operations and answered Mongol pupils’ questions from Korea using Web-based medical treatment system. In 2001, he donated medical equipment, including incubator, needed for childbirth to Mongol National Mother-Child Health Center. Lately, he signed an agreement to select 10 students from Mongol National Medical School for 5 years, give the opportunity to have internship at CLWH during vacation under support of scholarship. CLWH is known for employing 10% of the staff from multicultural immigrated women.
President Choi declared, “Mongol is still high in infant mortality and medically backward. In connection with Mongol local hospital, we are operating the system to have them receive safer and more successful fertilization by visiting Korea for cheaper expenses.” There are as many as 300 Mongol couples who have succeeded in pregnancy helped by CLWH New Life Center since 2010. The biggest reason that foreigners visit CLWH located at province to have IVF-baby is differentiated success rate of pregnancy. On this coming June 6, CLWH is going to invite couples and children, who succeeded in pregnancy helped by CLWH so far, to Tuushin hotel, Mongol, and hold ‘CLWH Fertility Forum.’
For diverse activities done for foreign patients, CLWH was designated as an excellent attracting institution for foreign patients by the Ministry of Law. Among the 13 institutions selected, this place was the only one in Gwangju/Jeonnam region. CLWH visited by over 300 foreign patients so far, has all instruction signs written in English, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Mongolian, equipped with manpower and system that can interpret and counsel in all of the 6 languages.
President Choi said, “A doctor is a job that requires research and efforts all the time. With the hospital ideology of creation and love, we will make endeavors to achieve our aim toward the best fertility center, and ultimately the world’s best hospital treating sterility.” Let’s expect that these people’s sincere efforts will bloom with the best medical technique and original intention.
