Eco-friendly heating system from a master hand
Ancestor’s wisdom recreated by advanced science and technology
Shin Chang-hwa, president of Valley Kudul

The world is busier than ever preparing countermeasures against the energy problem following oil exhaustion and the climate change caused by environmental destruction. That’s why there is globally a concentrated effort to reduce greenhouse gas emission and develop eco-friendly energies. In this situation, our people’s own technology Kudul, which is installed under the floor to make heating effect through radiation, is receiving new lights. Despite its efficiency at management and accumulation of thermal energy, Kudul has not been widely used because of many limitations.

Eco-friendly, low-carbon and low-fuel consumption to overcome the high oil-price age
In this high oil-price and eco-friendly age, Kudul is attracting continued attention. It is the fact, however, that Kudul has been considered ‘an uncomfortable and difficult heating facility.’ It has been distancing itself from ordinary consumers also because of the losses through extra charge caused by poor construction work. ‘Valley Kudul’ is the company that has worked out all setbacks of traditional Kudul, producing products capable of construction work for any form of room structure and leading along the population and globalization of Kudul.

Products made by Valley Kudul are called ‘360-degree panorama Kudul’ because it is intended to cover all directions of a house. It applies perfect construction method even from the very basic work and its inorganic ocher construction work doesn’t allow smoke to leak even at heating. The strengths of Valley Kudul are more than these. It has a fire box that can control quantity of heat according to the room size for the first time in the nation and has a strong durability to heat. Such advanced technology represented by Valley Kudul comes from lots of research and their efforts to make a better product.

Shin Chang-hwa, president of Valley Kudul, declared, “All technologies start from one point. At the time of going over the point you will have an item produced above imagination. Our people’s Kudul heating culture has much advanced for thousands of years. However, it still had many obstacles in usage that modern people need to surmount. Our Valley Kudul is carrying out research to get over certain limitations of Kudul heating.”

For systematic R&D on traditional Kudul, Valley Kudul prepared a lab in Gwangju Science and Technology Institute at the begging of this year and is adding fresh fuel to technological innovation. Using eco-friendly materials of their own developing, they are carrying on with construction work. They use only boiled ocher and organic matters for finishes keeping to materials that never cause the phenomenon of contraction or crack even in perfect combustion and high heat after construction work. Also, because of using no cement at all, it has the merit of not having harmful substances that can be generated from it.

President Shin said, “low-carbon, green-growth and eco-friendly construction is the principle we should abide by for our descendants. Kudul starts from the principle of nature called earth and returns to nature. Using this principle, we also take the lead in developing eco-friendly ocher mortar and make it a rule not to use materials that can harm our body. A house made only by eco-friendly materials will be a safe and healthy space that can accompany us until its expiration of life without causing any problem.”

Thermal efficiency lasting for 6 days from one-time heating
At this time of collecting capabilities for creative economy, President Shin emphasized that developing innovative technology for creative economy is possible only by creating a new value in any field and leading along through this. He said, “IT is not the only field for creative economy. Isn’t the heating technology in harmony between wood and Kudul of heating earth, both of which are eco-friendly material, an innovation? This heating technology, in which heat lasts for 6 days through one-time heating, is hard to find anywhere in the world.”

This energy efficiency of Valley Kudul really makes difference especially these days when ‘saving energy’ is emphasized for reason of oil exhaustion. Heat generated at a fire box, which acts as both fireplace and Kudul, warms up the room temperature in its primary heating effect and then accumulates secondarily through the Kudul of thermal storage method. Besides, it is efficient because we can control the quantity of heat generated through the fire box which is adjustable for the size. Above all, it is considered the far and most excellent heating system in terms of expense and environment since it uses cheap firewood for fuel.

President Shin said, “If Valley Kudul is constructed more widely, it would help the state with energy policy. It would also make actual support possible for the low-income class who must spend the winter depending on heating pads because of high oil prices.” Especially, President Shin added that he would even lower the construction work fee with constant R&D in order to activate this heating system for nursing homes, town hall, traditional Korean village, etc. He declared his plan to establish a manufacturing factory in person for this purpose.

Their efforts to spread, popularize and globalize our people’s own Ondol culture are going on and on. They applied for patent last November after finding the optimum mixing ratio between organic and inorganic matters through over 145 times of experiments while preparing for technological development this year to obtain green certificate, performance test from an authorized institution and realize zero smoke. President Shin says he wants to spread our cultural heritage of Kudul overseas through expansion of research scope and differentiated strategy and technology. He must be sweating silently even at the moment for many people’s warm home and we expect that his made ‘Kudul’ will find its proper place as a hot item for many people around the world.
