Original American-Style Pizza
Distinguishes itself with a differential concept and authentic taste
Nam Min-soo, president of Brothers F&B

Pizza, one of the representative eat-out menus, began to develop centering around Naples, Italy, in the middle of the 18th century. The first-ever pizza restaurant ‘Port Albs’ opened in 1830 and then ‘Margherita’ pizza was born in 1889 making this food very popular in all Europe until it completed its taste and shape in the US at the beginning of the 20th century and spread out to the whole world. Let’s hear about the success story of ‘1905 Giant Monster Pizza,’ which is making big fresh waves by bringing the original American pizza, a prototype for the contemporary one, with its authentic taste as it is.

Introduces New York-style pizza, the prototype of modern pizza
As a symbol of Italian food, pizza is one of the most loved dishes by the people of the world. Especially, in the US, where pizza has settled as an everyday food, there are as many people who eat pizza as in Italy. The first-ever pizza restaurant in the US was Gennaro Lombardi, which opened in 1905 on the Spring street of Manhattan, New York. Then after World War II, this dish came to spread even more by the US soldiers who had tasted pizza in Italy. Nam Min-soo, president of Brothers F&B, explained, “When it arrived in the US, pizza received a big change becoming larger in size to the people’s fondness for a large amount and enriching toppings focused on meat and cheese. For the most famous New York pizza, there were lots of cheese put on dough in a shape with the rim of the edge a little raised. This became the prototype in basic shape for the current pizza.”

Pizza sought for by ‘1905 Giant Monster Pizza’ is the original American pizza initiated in the US in 1905. So far, pizza has transformed through diverse countries and ages appealing to people’s palate and fashion. For case of the US, diverse styles of pizza have developed from region to region such as New York style, Chicago style, etc. Pizza served by Monster Pizza follows the path of this ‘authentic New York pizza.’

“In the US, pizza is a food culture rather than a dish culture. While Italian pizza is a dish served by a kind of restaurant enjoyed at times when eating out, New York-style pizza is a casual food closer to something to eat easily on the road in the shape of pieces as if to eat a hamburger.”

Trend of pizza culture has turned into ‘Fun.’
It is about since last year that the American-style pizza has become popular in our country. In the circumstances where Italian pizza occupied the most of market, president Nam Min-soo made a daring challenge to the industry in 2013 with ‘American-style pizza.’ At that time, people still didn’t know much about American-style pizza. He said, “At first, there were many people who were unaccustomed to this style of pizza. Some even asked why I didn’t serve then popular Gorgonzola pizza. However, since I adopted the American pizza as a platform, I thought I must adhere to the ‘classic.’ ‘Originality’ was a kind of our brand identity.”
There is certainly a trend and fashion in the restaurant industry. However, President Nam Min-soo was not carried away by the wave of fashion but chose the path to ‘orthodoxy.’ He was confident that the trend would come over here. President Nam said, “In the past, pizza turned from a high eat-out culture to a party culture enjoyed with friends. So it is time to meet a generation for having pizza casually as in the US. I feel rewarded when I have found my R&D and efforts so far are bearing fruit now.” 1905 Giant Monster Pizza serves a single set composed of piece pizza, potato chip and beverage so that even one person may taste pizza for himself as if to enjoy hamburger. Besides, along with the interior feeling like a neat pub and a pleasant shop atmosphere, it is settling as a youthful pizza restaurant where it is possible to enjoy pizza with beer.

Dreams of ‘partnership growth’ based on bond and trust
Starting with Youngnam Univ. head office at Daegu, ‘1905 Giant Monster Pizza’ has finished contracts for No. 10 shop as of now, proceeding with the aim of achieving a total of 30 shops for this year.
President Nam declared his ambition, “In accordance with an expanding size of the franchise, we have established inner system and how to support and administer our members. Within a month, we are going to open a company-operated store and office at Seoul/Gyunggi area with business expansion into the metropolitan area. Our purpose, for me and all the staff, is to build up into ‘a strong brand’ to last over a decade rather than a fad.” He went on to emphasize, “I think what matters most in the big success of a franchise is the bond between the head office and shop owners. It is the essence of a true ‘franchise’ to rise up and build up together, not each of them standing up separately.”

In the creative economy period with importance of a new value creation, challenge and revolution, the restaurant industry is equipped with a better environment for challenge and innovation than any other. It also accompanies the largest effect of creating employment by industrial activity. President Nam is dreaming of ‘partnership buildup’ based on a strong bond between the head office and members. His and Brothers F&B’s movements are worth noting because they are setting a new milestone for the restaurant industry with an unusual principle for adhering to ‘orthodoxy.’
