Jose Luis Bernal Rodriguez, the Ambassador of Mexico
Celebrating 53rd anniversary of diplomatic relations and co-prosperity
Korea-Mexico bilateral trade reaches $1.5b

Mexico has many of the world’s most famous tourist cities where Aztec and Mayan civilizations melted with Spanish culture. Mexico’s delightful atmosphere, balmy weather and beautiful beaches seem limitless to attract tourists from the world, and it is also a sought after honeymoon destination for many Korean couples. Spicy salsa that can be enjoyed with a great variety of Mexican food is also second to none. Mexico and Korea established diplomatic ties in 1962 and this year celebrate its 53rd anniversary. Korea’s top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met Jose Luis Bernal Rodriguez, the Ambassador of Mexico, who takes the initiative in promoting Mexico-Korea relations, at the Mexican Embassy in Hannam-dong, Seoul.

Expanding economic cooperation to many areas
H.E. Bernal has represented Mexico since 1979 by taking a variety of roles including Director General for Multilateral Economic Relations with North America, Counselor for Economic Affairs and Minister in charge of Congressional Relations of the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., Vice Chair of the OECD’S Committee on Territorial Development Policies, and served as Consul General in Los Angeles, and as Ambassador in Switzerland  and in the Czech Republic before being appointed as the Ambassador in Seoul in July 2013. Both presidents of Mexico and Korea established ‘Mexico-Korea Commission for the 21st Century’ in 2001 to analyze the prospective of the bilateral relationship in the medium and long term which was followed by launching Strategic Alliance for Mutual Prosperity in 2006. Especially, Korea as the 6th largest trading partner of Mexico and the 5th largest supplier of Mexico´s imports, H.E. Bernal says “There is no FTA between both countries yet. But Mexico is currently active within the boundary of TPP(Trans-Pacific Partnership: a regional regulatory and investment treaty consisting of 12 countries which are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the US and Vietnam) and we are doing our best to invite Korea to be involved in order to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.”

Kidzania and Promax Group being active in Korea
Korea, as the 17th source of FDI for Mexico and 3rd from the Asia-Pacific region
Although Mexico’s domestic economy is still largely dependent on the US, they are decreasing its scale by carrying out various foreign trade. The economic growth of Mexico was influenced by the expansion of the manufacturing industries such as construction, automotive, aerospace, steel, food and drinks, and recently tourism and IT industries are also playing a significant role. One of the Mexican companies currently being active in Korea is ‘Kidzania’ which is a Mexican chain of family entertainment centers starting in Mexico City in 1999 and operating now in 16 locations including Monterrey, Tokyo, Jakarta, Nishinomiya, Lisbon, Dubai and Seoul Lotte World. Kidzania invited 1,000 elementary students and the Seoul educational chief Heeyeon Cho to an event last March. Also notable is ‘Promax Group’ which shows a good performance in pulp, paper manufacture, chemicals and digital printings in Korea with an investment of 50 million dollars. Meanwhile, approximately 1,600 Korean companies are being active in Mexico including KORES, Samsung, LG, Posco, Kepco, and Hyundai/Kia and their investment scale is huge with S. Korea as the 17th source of FDI for Mexico and takes the 3rd place among Asia-Pacific countries.

Promoting unique Mexican culture in Korea
“We will keep on working together for co-prosperity”

With its beautiful nature, tradition and delicious food, Mexico has a strong cultural background. They held more than 70 cultural events in Korea last year. Every year, the Embassy prepares a Program for Cultural Promotion that aims strengthening Mexico’s presence in Korea and to promote bilateral cultural exchanges which include art, music, cinema, literature and dance. H.E. Bernal also introduced Mexico by saying “world-class tourist attractions are placed alongside the Mexico’s long beaches. Cancun, for example, provides fantastic beaches, jungles and the relics of Mayan civilization. Also, Mexico City has more than 100 museums and the world’s largest pyramid. Interesting enough that the three colors of our national flag are many times reflected in the way Mexican food is presented, for example in green pepper, white cream and red tomato in the country’s representative food ‘Taco’. If you visit Mexico, I am sure you will find a great charm in many corners of the country.” Meanwhile, H.E. Bernal showed his love of activities in Korea by saying “I know what I do and I love what I do. And this is my motto and I will fully enjoy my work and life in Korea. I like the modernity and convergence of Seoul and Busan, and am impressed by the mountain areas and facilities in Pyongchang, and I see Songdo is well on the way to becoming an international city.” He added that both countries have huge cooperation possibilities in many areas and he will do his best in pursuit of that goal until he finishes his term in Korea.
