직접 실험하고 배우는 스팀(STEAM)일등과학 10년 노하우

과거, 수많은 아이들의 장래희망이 ‘과학자’인 시절이 있었다. 새로운 것들을 탐구하고, 만들어내는 ‘과학’은 언제나 흥미롭고 즐거운 일이었기 때문이다. 그러나 입시위주의 교육체계는 우리 아이들을 과학으로부터 멀어지게 만들었다. 그러나 최근, 아이들의 창의적인 사고능력 함양이 중요시되며 ‘과학’이 다시금 주목받고 있다. 상상력과 감성을 모두 갖춘 융합형 창의인재 양성에 앞장서고 있는 ㈜일등교육 황용순 대표를 만나보았다.

창의력 배양하는 ‘쉽고 즐거운 과학’
과학교육에서 가장 중요한 것은 ‘체험’이다. 체험이 결여된 과학교육은 결국 기존의 암기식 교육체계에서 벗어날 수 없기 때문이다. ㈜일등교육은 학생들에게 최고의 과학체험을 제공하기 위해 과학실험 교재·교구 연구와 개발에 힘쓰는 한편, 초등학교의 방과후학교 민간위탁과 직업교육훈련을 실시하고 있는 과학 전문 기업이다.

황용순 대표는 “여타의 과학 교재나 교구들은 대부분 판매에만 목적을 두고 있습니다. 때문에 학생들과의 교감이 부족하고 실험 결과물이 너무 빈약한 경우가 많습니다. 좋은 결과물이 나와야 학생들도 만족하고 과학에 더 많은 흥미를 가지리라 생각합니다”라며 쉬운 과학, 재미난 과학을 위해 교재·교구 개발에 뛰어들게 되었다고 밝혔다. 

일등교육의 교재는 스팀(STEAM : 과학, 기술, 공학, 예술, 수학) 융합형으로 구성되어 있으며, 단순히 사진과 설명을 보고 따라하는 실험이 아닌 자기 주도적인 실험설계를 통해 창의적인 과학실험을 수행할 수 있도록 하는 데에 주안점을 뒀다. 또한 1인 1실험이 가능하도록 개별 구성되어 있는 실험도구는 결과물 중심으로 이루어져 학생들에게 성취감을 제공하고 있다. 

초·중등 과학실험 교재와 중등 과학이론 교재를 주로 개발하는 일등교육은 초등 방과후학교 과학실험 위탁운영을 체결하고 강사 교육과 학교 파견의 업무도 수행하고 있으며, 학생 관리와 학부모 상담 등 방과후학교 전반에 대한 운영과 관리에도 힘쓰고 있다.

21세기 미래 이끌 창의융합 인재 육성
최근 과학교육이 중시되는 까닭은 미래의 기술혁신에 있어서 폭 넓은 사고력과 창의력을 바탕으로 한 ‘융합’이 무엇보다 중요해졌기 때문이다. 무에서 유를 창조하는 것이 아니라, 기존의 기술을 새롭고 조화롭게 융합하는 것이 관건인 시대를 이끌어 갈 융합 인재의 필요성은 이미 사회 다양한 분야에서 드러나고 있다. ㈜일등교육에서 상상력과 감성을 아우를 수 있는 스팀교육을 선택한 까닭도 이 때문이다. 황 대표는 “저희 스팀과학은 자기주도적인 실험설계와 결과물 창출에 주력하는 프로그램입니다. 또한 결과물을 통해 과학에 대한 학생들의 흥미와 이해를 높여 융합적 사고와 문제해결력, 창의적 사고력을 길러 융합적 인재로 자라날 수 있는 기초를 다지는 프로그램입니다”라고 설명했다.

이에 따라 일등교육에서는 학생들에 눈높이에 맞춰 과학적 흥미를 유발하고, 즐겁고 재미있는 과학교육 프로그램을 제공하기 위해 연구와 개발에 매진하고 있다. 교원자격증소지자 및 과학관련 전공자 출신의 강사진은 본사의 60시간 교육시스템을 통해 민간자격협회의 방과후학교 과학실험지도사 자격증을 취득하게 된다. 매주 강사교육 및 학생관리, 학부모상담 등의 교육전반에 대한 집중 교육을 받게 되는 이들 전문 강사진은 현장에서의 의견 수렴과 피드백을 통해 보다 양질의 과학교육 프로그램 개발과 실험수업 능력 향상에 힘쓰고 있다. 또한 민간위탁 계약을 체결한 초등학교에서 탐구실험반 수강을 신청한 학생들에게 일주일에 1회 8~90분 수업으로 일반 사설 학원 교육과 동일한 수준의 질 높은 과학교육을 공교육 시스템 안에서 제공받을 수 있도록 돕고 있다.

함께 열어가는 과학교육의 미래
㈜일등교육은 지난해 ‘2014 우리마을 교육공동체 우수 협력 기관’으로 선정되어 대구시 교육청으로부터 감사패를 수상했다. 학생과 학부모, 학교, 기업 등의 지역구성원이 교육 네트워크를 형성해 아이들을 위한 교육환경을 조성하는 이 사업에서 일등교육은 지난 2011년 설립 이후 지속적으로 펼쳐온 봉사활동 및 재능기부 활동의 공로를 인정받았다. 
특히 지난 2013년 9월, 엄홍길휴먼재단과 ‘휴먼스쿨 과학수업 운영 협약’을 체결하고, 네팔 히말라야 지역에 건립된 휴먼스쿨에 무상으로 과학교재·교구를 후원하고 있기도 하다. 황 대표는 “교육은 학교 내에서만 이루어지는 것이 아니라 지역사회 구성원 모두가 함께 풀어가야 할 과제”라며 아이들의 교육을 위해 지역사회의 역할이 무엇보다 중요하다고 강조했다.

황용순 대표의 목표는 초·중등 교육에서 과학실험수업이 보다 체계적인 기반을 갖추고 차등없는 보편적인 교육이 될 수 있도록 돕는 것이다. 이에 올해에는 천안, 청주, 목포, 경북전역 등 타 시도의 초등학교 방과후 과학실험에서도 일등교육의 교재·교구 및 관리 프로그램, 강사교육 시스템이 적용될 수 있도록 노력할 방침이다. 또한 중등전문의 과학실험 교재·교구를 개발 중이며, 초·중등을 아우르는 과학전문 이론교재도 개발하여 학원에서도 보다 저렴한 비용으로 과학실험 수업을 받을 수 있도록 하기 위해 연구에 매진하고 있다.

10년이 넘는 시간동안 ‘과학교육’의 한 길에 모든 역량과 열정을 투자해 온 황용순 대표와 ㈜일등교육. 교재·교구의 우수성과 체계적인 관리 프로그램, 강사교육 시스템을 바탕으로 21세기가 요구하는 ‘창의적인 사고력’을 갖춘 미래 인재를 양성하고 있는 이들의 노력이 과학의 미래, 대한민국의 미래를 열어가는 열쇠가 되기를 바란다.

Easy and exciting science that develops creativity
The most important thing in science is experiment. Without it, students only can learn by rote. First Class Education is a science specialized company that researches and develops teaching materials of science experiment and provides vocational training. Hwang said "many teaching materials of science is focused on sales. Therefore, the contents lack communication and experiment results. But students can only be interested when they are provided with good results." This is the reason he started to develop exciting teaching materials of science. Their teaching material 'STEAM' stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math, and it enables students to be self motivated to experiment. Students can do 1:1 experiment with the experiment tools provided and the tools are centered on results so that students can feel a sense of accomplishment. First Class Education signed an agreement to run consigned management for students after school, and they train lecturers and send them to school, and manage students and consult for parents. 

Fostering creative talents who will lead the 21st century
Convergence based on thinking skills and creativity has become very important in terms of future technological innovation. It is not about creating something from nothing but converging the existing technologies harmoniously and we need talented people for that. Hwang said "our STEAM science is a program that has self-motivated experiment system and focused on creating actual results. Through this program, students can improve convergent thinking skills, problem solving skills and creative thinking." Their lecturers either have a teacher´s license or majored in science related subjects, and they are trained for 60 hours to obtain a Certificate of After School Science Experiment Conductor from Korea Qualification Association. The lecturers have to receive weekly training on lecturing, student management and consulting for parents and they also listen to various opinions to improve quality of their program. They are also carrying out experiment lessons (80 to 90 minutes) once a week in schools that signed the agreement and this means that students can receive quality private science lessons in public education system. 

The future of science education we want to build
First Class Education was chosen as '2014 Excellent Our Village Educational Community Cooperation Agency' and won an Appreciation Plaque from Education Office in Daegu. This project is for students, parents, schools and enterprises in the region to build an educational network to create a better educational environment, and First Class Education has been continuously participated in donation and community services. Especially, they signed 'Human School Science Class Management Agreement' with Um Hong Gil Human Foundation in September 2013 and donated free science teaching materials to Human Schools in Nepal and Himalaya. Hwang said "education is not only happening in schools but the role of local community is as important as that." Hwang's goal is to make systematic foundation of science experiment class in elementary and middle schools. For this, Hwang is planning to spread their program to Cheonan, Cheongju, Mokpo and Gyeongsangbuk Province. First Class Education is currently developing teaching materials in theory and practice for elementary and middle school students and is providing the materials at a reasonable price. Hwang and First Class Education have been exerting their efforts to make excellent teaching materials and programs for over 10 years. Power Korea hopes they will play a significant role to foster creative talents for the future of Korea.
