단열과 보온이 함께 이루어지는 제품은 존재하지만, 보온병 원리처럼 시간제한이 있거나 혹은 대단히 높은 가격대로서 접근이 어렵다고 한다. ‘필요는 발명의 어머니’임을 확신하고, 유년 시절부터 자택에 실험실을 두고 발명에 연구해 온 차성국 대표는 이 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시했다. 단열과 보온을 한꺼번에 해결하며 의류에서 첨단 소재까지 광범위하게 적용 가능한 ‘슈퍼알’로 세계 단열재 업계를 놀라게 한 차 대표의 ‘슈퍼알’을 만나보자.

아이디어와 인간애가 만나 최고의 단열 발명품 슈퍼알 탄생
석유화학제품으로 만든 유기단열제는 대규모 화재에서 유해 가스 발생과 산소 차단으로 오히려 더 큰 인명과 재산 피해를 야기한다. 그럼에도 불연소성 건축자재에 집중할 경우, 건물 내의 보온과 단열을 위한 별도의 비용이 건축 시장에서 채산성이 맞지 않는다는 이유로 중요성을 간과하기 십상이다. 따라서 한번 짓게 되면 수십 년을 유지해야 하는 건축 상황을 고려해 친환경 성향으로 미래에 더욱 강화될 규제에 대응하며, 높은 품질로서 단열과 보온을 책임질 수 있는 신소재는 앞으로도 각광받을 것으로 전망된다. ‘슈퍼알 열반사 단열재(복사열 단열재)’는 2001년 상용화 된 후 클레임 없이 효과를 인정받아 온 차성국 대표의 야심작이다. 서울중·고등학교 시절부터 물리, 화학 지식을 바탕으로 다양한 발명품을 만든 차 대표는, 1992년 발명한 슈퍼알을 통해 열 흐름의 핵심인 복사열을 97%까지 차단하여 기존 기술의 최대 20배나 에너지를 절감하는 기술의 발명특허를 받았다. 이 기술은 2007년 친환경대상을 수상하며 달의 우주상설기지 단열재로도 채택되는 등 국제적으로 인정받고 있다. “슈퍼알의 원리는 미세기공 처리된 순수 알루미늄 사이에 비전도체를 결합하여 양쪽으로 열을 반사하는 것이다. 그래서 단열이 되면서도 이슬 맺히고 곰팡이가 번식하는 결로 현상이 없다. 숨 쉬는 소재인 셈이다. 그래서 인체에 무해하고 유해가스 발생이 없으며, 불연성으로 방화벽 역할을 하니 화재의 2차 피해에서도 안전하다” 이러한 슈퍼알의 아이디어는 차 대표가 1967년 서울대 재학 시절, 등산도중 조난되어 저체온과 심장마비를 일으킨 친구의 죽음을 계기로 나왔다. 저서 <발명의 세월>에서, 차 대표는 의류 수출업을 하면서 우주복을 만드는 단열재로 알루미늄을 쓴다는 이야기를 듣고, 이윤추구보다는 사명감을 갖고 알루미늄 단열재를 반드시 만들겠다는 결심을 실행했다고 한다. 그리고 개발에 성공한 차 대표는 시공비 절감, 법 규정 개선을 모두 고려하여 마침내 발명특허 제 0513834호 슈퍼알 IST를 비롯하여 IMT, 샌드위치 판넬, 방화문, 썬캡 등 다양한 규격의 슈퍼알 시리즈를 개발해 상용화시켰다. 슈퍼알의 인상적인 장점은 시공이 쉽고 기존 단열재보다 1/250으로 줄어든 부피 덕분에 다양한 적용이 가능하다는 점이다. 건물, 산업설비, 의류, 모자, 그리고 대기권 밖의 우주상설기지 건축물까지 슈퍼알은 진정한 한류기술의 궁극을 보여주는 소재다. 

재능과 기술력으로 걸어 온 이상적인 발명가의 삶
차 대표는 평생을 통해 발명을 해 왔고, 그가 만든 20여개 제품들은 모두 사람의 편리함과 미래 기술의 경쟁력을 고려한 제품이다. 고등학생이던 1961년 발명한 손보호 크림은 KOH성분을 이용해, ‘동동구리무’ 식 단순수분증발기능에다 피부부식방지도 추가한 획기적인 화장품이었고, 중금속 성분으로 강제 미백을 하던 자외선차단크림이 성행할 때 그는 조상 전래기술인 수세미 줄기에서 추출한 물을 이용해 피부재생을 촉진하는 성분을 보존한 사실상 ‘국내 최초의 썬오일’을 만들었다. 그러던 차 대표는 20대에 ROTC 7기를 예편하게 되는데, 극심한 십이지장궤양으로 투병 중 서류가 분실되어 삼성그룹 등 굴지의 기업에서 상위 1%내 성적으로 합격했지만 번번이 군 서류 문제로 탈락한다. 이를 안타깝게 여긴 의류업체 미원산업(주)의 대표이사가 그의 재능을 높이 사서 정직원으로 발탁한 후부터는 승승장구하는 인생이었다. 그는 영업능력과 ‘신동’으로 불릴 만큼 물리와 화학에 기반 한 기술발명능력을 겸비했고, 자신의 발명기술을 국가에 기여할 기술력으로 키우려고 노력했기 때문이다. 5개 국어에 능통한 차 대표는 자신의 결혼비용조차 특허기술을 판매하여 벌었을 정도다. 그럼에도 차 대표를 힘들게 하는 유일한 걸림돌은 능력을 무시하는 구태의연한 ‘전관예우’ 다. 이에 대해 차 대표는 “우리나라는 전관예우를 폐지해야만 진정한 민주국가가 될 수 있다”고 주장했다. 유사 불량제품을 만드는 불법행위조차 정당히 심판해주지 않는 악법 때문에 슈퍼알의 정통성과 순수성이 침해되는 사례에, 차 대표는 기술력으로 당당히 승부하고 있다. 영하 70도를 웃도는 지역에도 구스다운보다 자신 있게 권할 수 있는 그의 24번째 발명품 슈퍼알은, 단열, 보온, 통풍, 투습기능을 모두 지닌 세계 유일한 제품으로서 사계절 단열재의 필요충분조건을 모두 갖추었기 때문이다. 가장 최근에도 한 유명 브랜드 슈즈가 탈색으로 대대적인 클레임을 일으켰는데, 차 대표는 30여 년 전 세계 최초 피그먼트 프린팅을 개발해 세탁 후 탈색 걱정 없는 면 재질 의류 및 땀을 흡수, 배출해주는 자연섬유 면 및 T/C 소재로서 전 세계 60억 명이 입을 수 있게 했다. 

세계 최고의 제품을 만들어가는 발명가 ‘차성국’
2012년 설립된 자회사인 ㈜에스에스스포츠에서는 슈퍼알의 기능을 의류, 신발, 모자, 이불, 텐트, 소방복 등에 적용해 생산하고, 2016년부터는 조달청의 지원을 받아 군납제품으로 보급되도록 할 계획이 있다. “열 차단 소재인 은은 알루미늄과 비슷한 98%의 효과를 내는데, 가격이 문제다. 반면 섭씨 2640도에서 녹는 알루미늄은 훨씬 저렴한 비용으로서 상용화에 유리하고 군용 야전 제품처럼 대량생산해야 하는 제품으로서 아주 좋다” 차 대표는 여전히 제품의 기술력을 생각하고 더 편리한 제품을 개발하는데 열을 올리고 있다. “발명은 세계적이고 독보적인 제품을 생산하는 원동력이다. 지금 하고 있는 단열 기술력으로 차후에는 의류메이커들과 일류 건축회사들이 슈퍼알의 제품과 기술력을 활용하도록 하겠다”고 결의를 다지는 차 대표는 이미 삼성건설로부터 긍정적인 제안을 받은 상태다. 기초과학과 함께 하는 호기심, 널리 인류를 이롭게 하자는 관점을 지닌 천재 발명가의 앞날은 여전히 밝고 기운에 넘쳐 있다.

Out of idea and humanity, the best insulator Super-R was born
Organic insulator made of petrochemical materials cause harmful gas when in large scale fire which leads to a lot of damages to our lives. But fire proof building materials were still regarded as unsuitable due to a lack of  profitability. It is expected, however, that eco friendly material for insulator will come into to the spotlight as related regulation will be strengthened in the future. Super-R Heat Reflection Insulator was developed by Cha and was commercialized in 2001 and was proved its effect without any claim. Based on his chemistry knowledge, Cha was a prolific inventor since he was a middle school student and he obtained a patent for his Super-R, invented in 1992, and it reduces energy up to 20 times by preventing radiation by 97%. Cha received 2007 Eco-friendly Award for this and Super-R was even used as insulator for space base on the Moon. Cha says "the principle of Super-R is to reflect the heat by combining non-conductive between pure aluminum which was fine-porosity processed. It prevents dew condensation, does not produce harmful gas, and fire-proof." The inventions of Super-R was triggered on the occasion that Cha just had to watch his friend dying by hypothermy and heart attack when they met with distress during the hike in his Seoul National University years in 1967. In his book 'The Times of Inventions', Cha says that he decided to make aluminum insulator when he learned the fact that aluminum is used to make the insulation of spacesuit. Cha's invention includes Super-R (patent number 0513834), and its series applied to IMT, sandwich panel, fire door and sun cap. The strong point of Super-R is that it is easy to use and the volume is 1/250 compared to existing insulator. It shows a pride of Korean technology and it is being used for buildings, industrial facilities, clothes, hats and space station. 

The passionate inventor's life in talent and technology
Cha has invented for life. 20 of his inventions are all based on convenient use and competitiveness of future technology. The hand cream he invented when he was a high school student in 1961 was innovative as it contained functions of keeping moist and of preventing skin corrosion. When artificial UV cream was a trend, he invented 'sun oil' which promotes skin regeneration made of extract of loofah stem for the first time in Korea. After he was discharged from The 7th ROTC in his 20s, he was accepted by Samsung Group with top score but his medical document, which he suffered from duodenal ulcer, was lost and his acceptance was canceled. Fortunately, the CEO of Miwonsanup (clothes company) recognized his talent and hired him. He showed a great talent in the invention ability based on physics and chemistry alongside his brilliant sales ability and worked really hard. Cha speaks five languages and he did not need to worry about his wedding cost as he already earned enough money for it by selling his patents. But Cha is not happy with Korea's granting the privileges of one´s former post. Cha says "if it is not demolished, Korea cannot truly be a democratic country. The originality of Super-R is ignored by law and there are many low quality imitations in the market but Cha nevertheless compete by his technical skills. Super-R is his 24th invention which can be recommended to the areas where the temperature fall down below minus 70. It is the only product that can cover the four seasons with its functions of insulation, preserving heat, ventilation and moisture transmission. A shoe company recently experienced a large scale claim due to its decolorization, but, 30 years ago, Cha invented world's first pigment printing that prevents bleaching and made 6 billion people in the world wear clothes made of natural fabric cotton and T/C material that absorbs and releases sweat.

SS Sports was established as an affiliate and they produce clothes, shoes, hats, blankets, tents and fire fighting garment by using the functions of Super-R and they are approved to provide for an army from 2016. Cha said "it makes 98% effect similar to sliver aluminum but the problem is price. On the other hand, aluminum that melts at 2640℃ can be commercialized at a much cheaper price and also good for mass produce such as military goods." Cha's passion on invention is indefatigable. Cha says "invention is a driving force to produce unique and global products. By using insulation technology, we will make global companies use Super-R products and technology. Cha currently was offered a positive suggestion from Samsung Construction. With curiosity about basic science, the genius scientist Sungkook Cha, who wishes to better human being in the world, has a bright future.
