Artisan Sunyeong Maeng
"I'm most happy when I'm working on jade"
Korea's representative jade artisan Sunyeong Maeng

41 years of dedication to jade
Roaming around the nation to find quality jade

Affected by his father's woodcraft workshop, Maeng became familiar with traditional Korean culture from his childhood. He majored in Traditional Crafts at Seoul National University of Science & Technology and started to work for a jade factory called 'Korea Jade' in the carving department and it became his career for 41 years. Maeng said "Chuncheon jade mine was developed in the 70s. I was living in Dobong District, Seoul, and heard that a jade factory was recruiting and I applied for it. I actually started to work without even knowing what jade was." Jadecraft requires meticulousness and tenacity throughout the whole process from choosing ingredients to manufacturing. When he started to run his own factory, he roamed around from China to Japan to find quality jade but it was not always an easy task. He once bought a coral at $30,000 in Japan but it was full of mud when opened. But his passion never stopped and he kept carrying on making various jade products such as Yeonjuk, Okduchim, rings, hairpin and playthings to master his skills.

Chosen for 2011 Korea Jade Crafts Victor
The jade tea cup given to Xi Jinping as a gift

The work that made Maeng's name recognizable is 'Baekok-samjok-ohyong-bonghwang-muntoo' selected by 2006 Korea Folkloric Crafts Competition. It was used for ornamental plate on the side of king's pillow and Maeng made it for 2 month by carving the pattern like sawtooth. It has a historical value as Maeng revived it in the traditional way of Goguryeo relics which have a phoenix, two dragons and a foot of crow. In 2011, Maeng was chosen for 2011 Korea Jade Crafts Victor for his 41 year contribution in the field. While many artisans said that they could barely make a living with jade, Maeng has carried on with his passion for 41 years. He even went to China to learn the 6,000 to 7,000 year old skills of jade crafting. Maeng also is the very person who made the jade tea cup given to Xi Jinping by President Park as a gift last June. Park gave it on the purpose of spreading the excellence of Korean artisans and Maeng made it by using Chuncheon jade based on the motive of lotus.

Meeting his works at 'Maengsi Gongbang (Workshop)' at Namdaemun Market
Doing his best for development of the jade market in Korea

Maeng is working 12 hours a day without even resting on weekend at a workshop in Hwajeon Village because he has to grind it by using a grinder and it requires a lot of time and effort. According to Maeng, one jade hairpin takes 4 to 5 days to be complete. He is supplying his works to Maengsi Gongbang located in the basement of Daedo Sangga in Namdaemun Market and it is run by his wife. The store mainly has accessaries and ornaments and many Chinese tourists are visiting recently. But Maeng feels a sense of frustration in the jade craft market in Korea. Due to a lack of recognition, many people often say it is too expensive. In fact, there is almost no jade craft market in Korea. Maeng said "in China, many jade products cost more than $18,000. As rich Chines people are looking for a perfect product, the artisans have to pour a lot of efforts. Each artisan has his/her own style and if one can execute it very well he/she can be very proud of oneself." Power Korea sends cheers to Maeng's passion.
