[Cover Story] 설석헌 강은이 문인화가
담백하고 강렬한 화풍의 문인화로 우리 고유의 정신 계승 한다
대중들에게 문인화의 아름다움 알릴 것

문인화(文人畵)는 ‘문인들의 그림 즉, 학자 사대부 계층이 그린 그림’ 이라는 뜻으로 서예를 포함한 시․서․화가 어우러진 그림이다. 서예는 3천여 년 간 이어져온 동양전통예술로, 붓을 사용해 문자의 조형미를 표현하는 예술 활동이다. 이 조형미는 단순히 미학적인 것이 아니라 더 나아가 감정을 나타내는 형식으로서의 아름다움이라 할 수 있다. 문인화는 매난국죽이 기본인데, 봄을 상징하는 매화, 여름을 상징하는 난초, 가을을 상징하는 국화, 겨울을 상징하는 대나무가 선비정신을 상징하는 대표적인 화풍이다. 설석헌 강은이 작가는 충청남도 천안시에서 서화실을 운영하며 30년 가까이 문인화의 전통을 이어가고 있는 화가다.

설석헌 강은이 작가는 충청남도 홍성군 광천읍 독배포구 출신으로 어린 시절부터 은은한 뱃고동이 울리는 아름다운 자연 속에서 자랐다. 그런 그녀가 화가의 꿈을 꾸게 된 것은 지극히 당연한 일일 것이다. 강 작가는 조선시대 무렵 유행했던 문인화를 주로 그리는데, 시원한 여백과 가감이 없는 선속에 그리는 이의 정신을 담은 담백한 그림을 특징으로 한다. 그 중에서도 특히 그녀의 화풍은 남성적이면서 힘찬 이미지의 선과 담박하여 부드러운 채색으로 표현된 작품이 주를 이룬다.

문인화를 그리는 것은 단순히 옛 화풍을 따르는 것이 아니라 매난국죽으로 대표되는 선비정신의 정수를 포착하는 것이다. 이른 봄의 추위를 무릅쓰고 제일 먼저 꽃을 피우는 매화, 깊은 산중에서 은은한 향기를 멀리까지 퍼뜨리는 난초, 늦은 가을에 찬 서리를 이겨내는 국화, 추운 겨울에도 푸른 잎을 유지하는 대나무가 선비의고결함을 상징하는 것으로 여겨졌기 때문이다. 또한 문인화는 시․서․화가 함께 어우러지는 것을 특징으로 하기 때문에 문인화 작가들에게는 서예 또한 필수적인 덕목이다.

강 작가는 1995년 국전에 첫 입상하면서 그녀의 경력을 시작했는데 그로부터 4년 뒤인 1999년 서예학원을 운영하기 시작했다. 강 작가는 “사군자를 기초로 해서 문인화를 익숙하게 공부했다 하더라도 화제, 즉 그림의 제목을 붓글씨로 격을 맞추지 못하면 그림이 온전치 않아 자기가 보내고자 하는 메시지를 시, 서로 적어낼 줄 알아야 문인화” 라고 서예에 대한 노력을 꾸준히 이어가야 함을 언급했다.

담백하며 힘찬 필치의 <어락도> <고교송백심> 등 대표작 보유해
강 작가는 문인화에 대한 끝없는 탐구와 연마를 통해 국전 특선 및 입선, 예술의전당 청년작가 선발, 등 각공모전에서 수상하였고, 서예부문, 문인화부문 초대작가로 활동하며 공모대전 운영·심사위원 역임, 천안시 서북구에서 설은묵연서화실을 운영하고 있다. 이 설은묵연은 강 작가가 처음 서실을 열어 후학양성 하기로 마음을 먹었을 때 배움을 얻은 스승님에게서 서루이름을 지으시어 사사받은 것으로, “눈이 오는(그) 언덕에서 먹과 인연을 맺어 흙을 도담아 언덕을 이루듯 학식을 쌓는다”의 뜻을 지녔다. 강 작가는 여기에서 옛글과 옛 그림 등의 탐독을 통해 문인화에 대한 애정을 기르고 있고 문기(文氣) 있는 작품을 만들어내는 것에 고심을 하고 있다. “그림이 눈에 보이는 형태와 모양을 간단한 필치로 표현하더라도 그 사람의 인격과 사상이 표현될 수 있는 작품”이 바로 그녀가 말하는 ‘문기(文氣) 있는’ 작품이다. 문인화의 소재는 모든 자연이고, 최근 강 작가는 사서삼경 즉 고전 등 성현들의 말씀에서 사람이 가져야 할 인성의 밑바탕이 되는 구절을 그림으로 표현하려 한다.

강 작가의 대표작으로 일컬어지는 <어락도(쏘가리)>, <고교송백심(古交松柏心)> <선명하니 고운매화>, <복숭아>,등의 작품들은 담박한 고전적인 아름다움과 함께, 글씨와 그림에서 동시에 느껴지는 힘찬 기개로 보는 이를 감탄에 몰아넣는다. <고교송백심>은 조선시대 추사 김정희 선생의 <세한도>발문을 발췌한 내용으로 귀양을 받아 제주도에 머무는 추사선생을 끝까지 스승으로 모시는 제자 이상적의 마음에 감동하여, 이글을 소나무를 배경으로 다시 표현한 문인화이고, <어락도>는 대궐에 입성하는 쏘가리(궐어)를 지학, 이립, 불혹, 지천명, 이순, 종심소욕으로 표현한 작품은 그야말로 압권이다.

서예와 문인화 연구∙강연 이어가며 전통미 찾아
내년에 9회 개인전 열 예정
한편 강 작가는 문인화의 전통을 현대에 꾸준히 이어가기 위해 인근문화센터와 본인이 가진 설은묵연에서 서예, 문인화에 대한 연구와 강의를 이어가면서 수강인들을 대상으로 교학상장을 하고 있다. 강 작가는 “동양회화의 정신적 이상이 담긴 문인화를 사람들이 좋아해 공부를 오래 하여 정진하는, 보통 사람들이 먹을 갈아서 문인화를 즐길 수 있는 세상이 됐으면 좋겠다”는 바람이다. 강 작가는 “주어진 일과 직장생활에 심신이 피로한 분들은 분주하고 힘든 일상으로부터 잠시 마음을 쉬고, 그렇게 자기 안에 잠재되어 있는 예술성을 일깨우다 보면, 서화를 통해 자신을 가다듬으면서 현실에 밀려서 보지 못했던 자아를 찾게 되고 나아가 자신을 사랑하게 된다” 고 먹을 갈아서 하는 서화의 예술성을 다시 한 번 강조했다. 강 작가는 또한 활동을 본격적으로 시작한 1995년부터 후학 양성에도 힘써, “초등학교 4학년 재학할 때부터 가르친 제자가 대학에서 서예, 문인화를 전공하고 대학원 논문 제출을 앞두고 있고, 대학에 진학하려고 서예, 문인화를 공부하는 중학생이 수학중이라”고 만면에 웃음을 띤다. 그녀는 문인화에 대한 관심을 높이면서 전통 문화를 쉽게 접할 수 없었던 아이들과 젊은이들, 지난 시간을 치열하게 보내고 은퇴한 장년에게 문인화를 배우고 즐길 수 있는 공간, 즉 갤러리 겸 문화센터를 만드는 것을 꿈꾸고 있다. “우리가 어렸을 때만 해도 초등학교에 서예 시간이 여러 번 있었다. 요즘은 미술도 교장 선생님 선택인지라 문인화는 물론이고 서예조차 접할 수 있는 기회가 많지 않다. 그러나 ”문인화를 자주 접해보면 천천히 하는 참을성과 인내심 그리고 집중력, 나아가서 좋은 마음을 갈고 닦아 진실한 인격을 기른다“고 이야기하는 강 작가는 2016년 천안에서 아홉 번째 개인전을 열 예정이다. 우리 전통의 아름다움을 통해 정신의 수양을 이끌어내는 강 작가. 그녀의 힘 있는 그림처럼 꺾이지 않는 고결한 선비정신이 앞으로도 더욱 빛날 수 있기를 기원한다.

Spreading the beauty of literati painting 

True literati painting is to express harmony of poet, calligraphy and painting
Seol Seok Hun Kang Eun-yi was born and grew up in Dokbae port, Gwangcheon-eup, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. Kang's main works are literati painting that was a trend in the Joseon Dynasty era. Its characteristics are blank margin and candid lines expressed blandly. Her style, however, is rather masculine and shows brisk lines expressed through soft coloring. To draw literati painting is not to just follow old style but to catch the scholary spirit of the Four Gracious Plants. Plum that blossoms first on earth against cold, orchid that spreads its scent to far-off, chrysanthemum that overcomes frost and bamboo that keeps green leaves in cold winter are all symbols of noble character of scholars. Calligraphy is also a must for scholar painter as it is one of the three elements of literati painting. Kang was selected from National Art Exhibition in 1995 and started to run her own calligraphy academy in 1999. Kang says "even if you are much familiar with the Four Gracious Plants but cannot write the title or poet in the painting properly, it cannot be called as literati painting."

Kang was selected from National Art Exhibition, Youth Artist of Seoul Arts Center, and received various prizes in contest exhibits, calligraphy sector, literati painting sector, and served as a member of management committee and judge panel, and is currently running Seoreunmukyeon-seohwasil in Seobuk Distric, Cheonan. She received the name Seoreunmukyeon by siting at the master's feet, the teacher who she gained an education from when she decided to foster younger students by opening her own calligraphy academy. The name means 'accumulate knowledge like building a hill by pressing soils by making a bond with ink on that snowy hill'. Kang is growing affection for literati painting through devouring classics and old paintings and is trying hard to make works that contain 'written energy' which can express the philosophy and personality of the artist alongside forms and shape on the painting. The subject matter for literati painting is the nature and Kang is trying to express the foundation of human personality told in the Seven Chinese Classics (the Four Books and the Three Classics) on her paintings. Kang's famous works such as Eoraktto (mandarin fish), Gokyo-songbaekssim, Clean and Pretty Plum, and Peach have traditional beauty and vigorous spirit and they draw admiration from audience. Gokyo-songbaekssim was made because she was touched by Sangjuk Lee who took care of Junghee Kim who was living in exile in Jeju Island. She quoted part of Junghee Kim's 'Sehando' and expressed it with pine tree as the background. Eoraktto, on the other hand, is about mandarin fish entering into palace expressed through gihak, leelip, burhok(40), jicheonmyeong(50), isun(60) and Jongsimsoyok.

Kang is carrying out research and lecture on literati painting in cooperation with regional culture centers and giving teaching and award to students to deliver the tradition of literati painting. Kang says "literati painting contains spiritual ideals of eastern paintings and I want to make a world where people enjoy doing it in life. If you grind ink stick on ink stone and give yourself a rest, you can forget about your tiresome life and arouse artistic value dormant inside you and you can find true yourself to love." Kang also has been exerting her effort to foster younger students since 1995. She says "one of my students who I taught went on to university majoring in Calligraphy and Literati Painting and is now studying at a graduate school, and many middle school students who want to carry on their dream to university level also is learning really hard under my conduction." She is also planning to build a gallery & culture center where people can learn literati painting in the future. Kang says "back then, we had a calligraphy class. But it depends on the principal of a school whether to choose it as a curriculum so there isn't much opportunity to learn it nowadays. I hope they will understand that calligraphy can give student patience, concentration and gentle personality." Meanwhile, she is planning to hold her 9th solo exhibition in Cheonan next year.
