Q: Osan University's Tourism and Food Services Business Department is famous for its contents including coffee training. What is it about?
A : It covers many areas from hotel, tourism, management to cooking, coffee, bakery, cocktail, wine, tea, service, manner, decorum and personality with which we teach our students thoroughly. Coffee training in particular is most famous in the region and we hold National High School Barista Competition. We have highly experienced professors and we meticulously manage our students from reception to graduation and getting a job. 

Q : What motivated you to get interested in coffee?
A : I never thought I could do something related to food industry. I chose my major and university based on my school record at first but changed to tourism and worked for Shilla Hotel and learn one by one about the industry. I was curious about wine, cocktail, beverages and coffee and this led me to achieve good performance in customer service and sales. But coffee was most attractive for me and I started researching on the effect of its taste. It's interesting that the taste and scent of coffee get different depending on who makes it. That's why I learned 'tasty coffee extract methods' which I think is the charm of coffee making. It is a magical liquid as we naturally say "Would you like a cup of coffee?" in our daily life.

Q : What is the most important element in training?
A : Personality is the most important. You have to control your mind and your facial expression at the same time. Good personality in that terms is very important first of all and secondly quality of training and thirdly spreading coffee culture and pursuing its future value. It's difficult to change one's personality and I try really hard to take the initiative and set an example. I teach students under my slogan 'Like I serve my family, Like I train my family' which helped me a lot to make an encouraging atmosphere. I also advise students to make a habit of bowing to their parents in the morning and evening in line with providing excellent customer service. 

Q : Global coffee market is huge and people are crazy about it. Why is that?
A : Coffee connects people with people. Everybody can drink anywhere. The coffee market in Korea started in earnest when Starbucks opened the first store around Ewha Womans university in 1999. Of course there was 'Dabang' before that time but the meaning was the same on the fact that it connects people. According to a research, Korea is world's 6th consumer (228 cups per person) after US, Brazil, Germany, France and Italy. We have relatively short history of coffee market but explosive quantitative growth is causing a concern. Therefore, measures for qualitative growth must be prepared among educators including myself.

Q : What can I experience in Seoul Riverside Barista Academy?
A : I tried hard to spread right coffee culture by opening the academy before being a professor. It's now run by one who has the same management idea as me. The academy provides training on the philosophy that right recognition, extract skill and personality make good coffee. Other programs include Coffee Road (Coffee Road with Park KeundoCoffeetainer) and Coffee Farm Visit.

Q : What is your goal to achieve?
A : The coffee market will grow through various forms. If we have balance between quantitative growth and qualitative growth it will take a significant role among industries. There are many jobs relating to coffee at the moment but they lack understanding. That's why we foster right personality in creativity and skill through right training. We will also carry out social service activities so that those who dream to be a barista but cannot afford to be trained can make their dream come true. I feel really worth that I can be someone who can make others happy through talent donation. I think that 'knowledge gets alive when it is shared' and I ask people's participation.
