귀엽고 친근한 동물, ‘돼지’의 왕국을 가다
다양한 볼거리와 즐길거리가 가득한 생태교육의 장

딱딱한 책상 앞에 앉아 책 속에 갇힌 지식만을 강요받던 우리 아이들에게 생명과 생태가 함께하는 전인교육의 장이 열렸다. 드넓은 자연이 아이들의 교실이 되고, 공부가 즐거운 놀이가 되는 교육농장이 바로 이것이다. 그리고 그 중에서도 ‘생명의 소중함’과 ‘함께하는 즐거움’을 느낄 수 있는 국내 유일의 돼지테마파크, ‘돼지보러오면돼지’가 주목받고 있다.

교과과정과 연계한 생태체험학습
쌀의 고장 이천. 이곳에는 세계에서 두 번째로 만들어진 돼지 박물관이 있다. 돼지를 주제로 한 교육과 체험이 동시에 이뤄지는 에듀팜 농장인 ‘돼지보러오면돼지’는 지난 2011년 설립된 이래 유아, 초·중·고교 등 학교 교과과정과 연계해 조성된 ‘현장체험교육농장’으로서의 역할을 다하고 있다.

아이들에게 직접 돼지를 보고, 만지며, 느낄 수 있는 자연교육의 기회를 제공하고 있는 ‘돼지보러오면돼지’에서는 세계 여러 나라에서 수집한 돼지 인형과 자료를 모아놓은 돼지박물관도 함께 운영하고 있다. 약 90평에 달하는 돼지박물관 전시실에는 이종영 대표가 지난 17년간 세계 19개국을 돌며 수집한 수많은 돼지 관련 도자기와 미술품 등의 작품이 전시되어 있다. 박물관에는 중국, 일본 등 세계 각국의 그림과 공예품 1300여점과 돼지저금통 300여점이 전시되어 있으며, 아직 소개되지 못한 작품도 무려 4,000여 점에 이른다.

돼지박물관 옆으로는 편백나무 등 녹지시설과 생태하천, 야외학습장, 돼지관찰시설, 생태연못이 있는 1,400평 규모의 치유정원이 자리 잡고 있다. 아이들이 직접 어떤 종류의 식물이 자라는지, 물고기는 무엇이 있는지를 관찰해 보고, 있는 그대로의 자연을 느끼며 살아 숨 쉬는 생태학습을 체험할 수 있는 공간이다.

생명의 소중함을 일깨워주다
‘돼지보러오면돼지’에서 가장 인기를 끄는 것은 돼지 공연이다. 흥분과 기대 속에서 등장한 미니 돼지들은 사육사가 멀리 던진 공을 물어오거나, 볼링핀을 쓰러뜨리거나, 장애물을 피해 골대에 골을 넣는 묘기를 부리며 관람객들의 환호성을 이끌어낸다. 또한 돼지들이 사육사의 숫자 구령에 따라 이동하는 장면은 절로 감탄을 자아내게 만든다. 이종영 대표는 “돼지의 IQ는 75~85 정도로 3~4살 아이의 지능과 맞먹습니다. 이곳에서 태어나 자란 돼지 중 가장 똑똑한 돼지들을 골라 훈련시킵니다”라고 설명했다. 약 40분간 펼쳐지는 공연은 돼지에 대한 관람객들의 인식을 바꿔놓기에 충분했다.

돼지 연구에 평생을 바쳐온 이종영 대표의 돼지사랑은 유별나다. 1996년 돼지인공수정센터 창업 이후 전세계를 돌며 돼지 관련 수집품을 모아오던 그는 ‘돼지는 미련하고 지저분하다’라는 오해를 풀기 위해 돼지박물관을 설립했다고 한다. 그는 올해에는 돼지의 습성을 관찰할 수 있는 ‘돼지 사파리’와 우수 한돈을 알리는 ‘바비큐장’도 오픈할 계획이다. 아이들이 직접 자연을 체험하고, 다양한 교육적 경험을 쌓을 수 있도록 교육농장으로서의 역할에도 더욱 매진하겠다는 이종영 대표. 그의 돼지 사랑이 더 많은 아이들에게 생명의 소중함과 배려를 알려주는 메시지로 퍼져 나가기를 기대해본다.

Ecological experience linked with a course of study
Icheon is famous for rice but there is another thing to pay attention to: Pig Theme Park. Since its establishment in 2011, it has been taking a role as a field experience farm linked with educational organizations from nursery to high school. It provides various opportunities for students to see to touch and to feel pigs in the farm, and the museum (300 square meters) displays world pig dolls, collected from 19 countries, and related ceramics and art works including 1,300 paintings and craft works, 300 piggy-bank and 4,000 items which are not on display yet. Right next to the museum is a healing park (5,200 square meters) containing green facilities, ecological stream, nature exploration area, pig observation facility and eco-pond. Children and students can directly experience various kinds of plants and fish, and can feel the nature which normally is lack in city environment.

Reminding children of precious life
The most popular program in Pig Theme Park is pig performance. Baby pigs enter the stage in excitement of spectators and they catch a ball the keeper throws or topple bowling pins or put a ball into the goalpost by avoiding obstacles. When pigs are moving in line by verbal order of the keeper, the spectators cannot help but wow. Lee says "pig's IQ is 75 to 85 equivalent to 3 to 4 year old brain. We select the most intelligent pigs to be trained." The performance usually lasts for 40 minutes and it is enough time for spectators to change their recognition about the animal. As Lee has been researching on the animal for life, his love of pigs are special. He founded Artificial Insemination Center for Pig in 1996 and has collected pig related materials by traveling around world. He said that he established the museum to change people's prejudice that pigs are stupid and dirty. And this year he is planning to open Pig Safari where people can observe pig's behavior and 'barbecue area' with which he wants to spread excellent quality of Korean pork. Lee wants to provide more opportunities for children to build a variety of educational experience through his farm and museum.
